The main objective was to assess dune vulnerability—a reduced ability to adapt to change, which is of serious concern not only in Western Europe but on a world scale. A main root checklist together with two daughter ones were devised in order to achieve this objective. The main root checklist comprised six categories (site and dune morphology, beach condition, surface character of the seaward 200 m of dune, vegetation, anthropogenic impact and protection measures in place) and dunes were classified according to their vulnerability compared to protection measures. The Resilience daughter checklist encompassed dune erosion, sand input, sand retention, degradation by use and dune management. This was compared with risk factors such as obstacles to dune transgression and recreation. The geomorphology, aeolian, vegetation, anthropogenic, marine influences daughter checklist looked at 30 dune systems in the Gulf of Cadiz and assessed dune condition by a dune vulnerability index based on the above conditioning influences. Values for all checklists were expressed as percentages. Over 200 dune sites in Spain, France, Portugal and the UK were analysed by means of these checklists. Results confirmed that regional trends concerned with dune vulnerability could be assessed, although successful differentiation at the end of the dune spectrum (large sand sheets, e.g. Pyla, France and meadow formation, e.g. many of the UK systems) and at the local scale were muted. An innovative aerial digital photographic system was developed and photographs were successfully used to assess dune condition, anthropogenic impact on dune systems, etc., i.e. the checklist parameters and was used to modify checklist procedures in assessing regional dune degradation. Ca 70% of the checklist parameters could be obtained by this means. This also provided a photographic record of the current dune condition. Principal component analysis provided a strong justification for the majority of checklist questions and the approach and relevance of the technique. The enumerated techniques provide valuable tools for dune managers. Rapid assessment of large areas of coastline can be obtained at a low cost and the resulting remote sensed images can provide a permanent record of the condition of the photographed dunes.  相似文献

The Pe˜na Negra anatectic complex (central Spain) was formed from a pelitic protolith low in boron (3–80 ppm), by dehydration reactions, melting and fluid loss, which expelled much of the boron; residual B is present in sillimanite and muscovite. Migmatite melanosomes and restites (sillimanite + biotite + ilmenite) are relatively richer in B (mean 29 ppm), while the leucosomes are poorer (13 ppm). Late shears, fractures and zones of retrograde alteration have permitted some reintroduction of B. Experiments demonstrated that B cannot be removed from these rocks by heating or by leaching, indicating that very little is present in superficial adsorption and that the element occurs in mineral structures.  相似文献

A model of intergalactic medium heated by QSOs and cooled by the expansion of the universe and Compton cooling is studied in the framework of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. Cosmological evolution functions of the comoving density of QSO's as well as the case of no evolution are considered. The theoretical X-ray background spectrum (through thermal bremsstrahlung) and Comptony parameter are calculated including relativistic corrections in the electron-electron, electron-proton and electron-photon interactions. The observed X-ray background and the upper limit of the Compton parametery cobe given by the COBE satellite are used to adjust, for each value of reheating redshiftsz c ranging from 0.1 to 5.0, the present values of the temperatureT 0 and densityn 0 of the intergalactic gas. Forz c > 0.25, when the theoretical X-ray spectrum fits the observed one, the adjusted values ofT 0 andn 0 imply iny >y cobe. On the other hand, whenT 0 andn 0 are consistent withy cobe, the calculated X-ray spectrum is lower than the observed one. Unless 100% of the observed X-ray background is due to discrete sources and if the intergalactic medium contributes more than 2.5% to such background we come to the interesting result that the medium must have been heated atz c < 1. In this case we shall have to explain the high energy rates necessary to heat the intergalactic medium. Forz c 0.25, it is possible to find values ofT 0 andn 0 such that both the calculated X-ray background and the y parameter simultaneously reproduce the corresponding observed values. However, in this case, unless it could be shown to be otherwise by future observations or theoretical studies, it seems that the model of hot intergalactic medium is not plausible because of the high energies required to heat the intergalactic gas.  相似文献

This paper provides a study on the development and the use of a small autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) that automatically follows programmed mission transects, while measuring sensor outputs along the tracks. It discusses the mechanical construction of the ASV, the distributed architecture of controller area network (CAN)-based nodes for science and vehicle payloads, high-speed radio-frequency (RF) communications, the performance of the heading autopilot, global positioning system (GPS)-based guidance algorithm, and the mission programming technique. The field trials of the ASV, performed off the coast of Goa, India, are focused on retrieving the 2-D spatial distribution of surface chlorophyll, which is one of the useful parameters in characterizing the nature of calibration-validation (CALVAL) sites for ocean remote sensing needs. A further benefit of ASVs is that they can be built at a low cost and used in monitoring applications of diverse coastal ecosystems.  相似文献

Karst poljes in the Dinaric Mountains have a complex hydrological regime and high potential for crop production. Little information is available about soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), carbon stocks (SOCS), and nitrogen stocks (TNS) in karst poljes located in the Dinaric area. The objective of this paper was to study the spatial distribution of SOC and TN in topsoil (ranged from 9 to 53 cm depth) and whole profile SOCS and TNS (ranged from 15 to 160 cm depth) in the Livno karst polje depression (Bosnia and Herzegovina) using kriging and co-kriging approaches. We used the following properties as co-variates: distance from hills (DFH), distance from the lake (DFL), sand, silt, and clay content, TN, SOC, SOCS, and TNS. We only used the properties that had a significant correlation with the estimated properties as co-variates. The results showed that soils in the study area had high average SOC (7.92%), TN (0.79%), SOCS (191.05 t ha?1), and TNS (17.91 t ha?1) values. Histosols had the highest SOCS and TNS and Arenosols the lowest. The experimental variogram of LogSOC and LogTN was best-fitted by the spherical model, while the exponential model was the most accurate for LogSOCS and LogTNS. The spatial dependence was moderate for all studied soil properties. The incorporation of auxiliary variables increased the precision of the estimations from 35.7% (SOC?×?TN) to 49.2% (TNS?×?SOCS).  相似文献
