The potential impacts of naval sonar on cetaceans has led to a series of court cases and statements of concern by international organizations. However, there has been no research conducted on attitudes of the general public with respect to this issue. To investigate this, a preliminary public survey was conducted in Fairfax, Virginia (the Washington, DC Metro region). The majority of the public sampled believed that naval sonar impacted marine mammals (51.3%), that the US Navy should not be exempt from environmental regulations in time of peace (75.2%), and that sonar use should be moderated if it impacts cetaceans (75.8%). Individuals who were conservative, Republican, and have served in the military were more likely to believe the Navy should be exempt from marine mammal protection regulations. In addition, expert interviews were conducted to gain opinions on the potential ramifications of the recent US Supreme Court case on naval sonar mitigation.  相似文献

Hardpans, or cemented layers, form by precipitation and cementation of secondary minerals in mine tailings and may act as both physical and chemical barriers. Precipitation of secondary minerals during weathering of tailings can sequester metal(loid)s, thereby limiting their release to the environment. At Montague Gold Mines in Nova Scotia, tailings are partially cemented by the Fe arsenate mineral scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O). Previous studies have shown that the formation of scorodite can effectively limit aqueous As concentrations due to its relatively low solubility (<1 mg/L at pH 3–4) and high As content (43–52 wt.% As2O5, this study). Co-existing waters and solids were sampled at Montague Gold Mines to identify present-day field conditions influencing scorodite precipitation and dissolution, and to better understand the mineralogical and chemical relationship between hardpan and tailings. In addition to scorodite, hardpan cements were found to include amorphous Fe arsenate and Fe oxyhydroxide. Nearly all hardpan is associated with historical arsenopyrite-bearing concentrate which provides a source of acidity, As5+ and Fe3+ for secondary mineral precipitation. Pore waters sampled from the hardpan have pH values ranging from 2.43 to 7.06. Waters with the lowest pH values also have the highest As concentrations (up to 35.8 mg/L) and are associated with the most extensive hardpan and greatest amount of weathered sulfide. Samples from areas with discontinuous hardpan and less sulfide have near-neutral pH and lower As concentrations. Detailed petrographic observations indicate that the identity and stability of As-bearing secondary minerals depends on the continued availability of sulfide concentrate. The results of this study are being used to develop remediation strategies for highly weathered, hardpan-bearing tailings that consider the stability of both primary and secondary minerals under various cover scenarios.  相似文献

Climate change presages increasingly ice-free waters in the Canadian Arctic and fundamental reconfiguration of Asia–Europe and Asia–US East Coast marine transportation networks via the Northwest Passage (NWP). Retreating sea ice will impact the annual re-supply of goods to northern communities, natural resource development, cruise ship and adventure tourism activity, and the fishing industry. Reviews of infrastructure to support increased shipping activity and support future developments highlight an ageing Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) icebreaker fleet. This paper aims to debate the need for, and provision, ownership and management of Arctic icebreaking services required to serve a NWP. It reports perceptions by 110 experts of future marine activity in the Canadian Arctic and CCG services, principally Arctic icebreaking, in terms of their effectiveness and efficiency. The extent of possible private involvement is identified and evaluated. The requirements needed to ensure timely and uninterrupted marine transportation from vessels operating in these waters are highlighted.  相似文献

Summary. We have obtained the temperature solution for a thermal model of the plates in which material is emplaced at discrete intervals rather than spreading continuously. The time-averaged heat flux and integrated heat flux for this discrete instrusion model are finite everywhere, differing from that given by a one-dimensional cooling model within a few intrusion widths of the ridge axis. In the limit as the intrusion width and period of emplacement tend to zero the temperature solution away from the ridge axis becomes that given by a modified plate model where a thermal balance boundary condition instead of a constant temperature condition is applied at the ridge axis. The integrated heat loss from a limited age interval about the ridge differs negligibly from that given by the one-dimensional cooling model or the modified plate model provided the interval extends more than two intrusion widths from the ridge axis.  相似文献

This Commentary introduces a Special Issue of Earth Surface Processes and Landforms dedicated to the memory of Stephen Coleman (1966–2012) who sadly passed away on July 23, 2012. Stephen was an incredible enthusiast for the study of bedforms and made seminal contributions to our knowledge and understanding of flow, sediment transport and bedform dynamics. Stephen presented a keynote address at MARID 3, which has led to this Special Issue (see Coleman SE, Nikora VI. 2011. Fluvial dunes: initiation, characterization, flow structure. Earth Surface Processes and Landforms 36 : 39–57. DOI. 10.1002/esp.2096) and was always keen to discuss research, from theory to techniques to experiments. He was always generous with his time and touched many with the influence of his thoughts and intellect. Our community has lost an outstanding scientist and Stephen will be greatly missed by us all.
