Subansiri?CRanganadi Doab (confluence country), located in Lakhimpur district, Assam, is one of the worst flood-affected areas in Brahmaputra valley. The Doab is well populated, and land around these rivers is extensively used for cultivation. As means of flood protection, embankments were constructed in the 1950s along the banks of both the rivers. On the other hand, these rivers are dynamic in terms of banklines and other forms of channel changes. Progressive migration of bankline, due to erosion, results in loss of cultivable land. Moreover, it causes breaches in the embankments increasing the severity of flood in the Doab. This paper attempts to study the changes in the banklines of two major rivers in the floodplains of the Subansiri?CRanganadi Doab during 1997?C2009 in the context of the riverine hazards it brings to the floodplain dwellers. The shift of the banklines in Subansiri?CRanganadi Doab, downstream of North Lakhimpur, has been estimated using IRS LISS imageries of 1997 and 2009 in GIS environment. The river Subansiri during the study period has migrated westward and has widened substantially resulting in erosion of an area of ~19.137?km2. For Ranganadi, the total area that has been eroded due to channel changes is ~0.897?km2. The channel changes are mainly due to concave bank erosion associated with high stages of flow. Channel widening in Subansiri and Ranganadi in the study area during the decades of 1990s and 2000 has led to frequent breaches in the embankments. Lateral erosion and inundation due to embankment failure are the most dominant facets of riverine hazards in the study area as these lead to loss of livelihood. Clays associated with the Precambrian unconformity-related (sensu lato) uranium mineralization that occur along fractures of Rohini carbonate, Bandai sandstone and clay-organic rich black carbonaceous
Gorakalan shale of the Sonrai Formation from Bijawar Group is significant. Nature and structural complexity of these clays
have been studied to understand depositional mechanism and palaeoenvironmental conditions responsible for the restricted enrichment
of uranium in the Sonrai basin. Clays (<2 μm fraction) separated from indurate sedimentary rocks by disaggregation, chemical
treatment and centrifugation were examined using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Presence
of tv-1M type illite is inferred from the Rohini and Bandai Members of the Sonrai Formation, indicative of high fluid/rock
interaction and super-saturation state of the fluids available in proximity with the uranium mineralization. It is observed
that the Sonrai Formation is characterized by kaolinite > chlorite > illite > smectite mineral assemblages, whereas, Solda
Formation contains kaolinite > illite > chlorite clays. It has been found that the former mineral assemblage resulted from
the alteration process is associated with the uranium mineralization and follow progressive reaction series, indicating palaeoenvironmental
(cycles of tropical humid to semi-arid/arid) changes prevailed during maturation of the Sonrai basin. The hydrothermal activity

The Upper Callovian-Oxfordian strata of the Kachchh Basin, western India, record three positive excursions of phosphorus. They have been documented in three sections of the Chari Formation from different parts of the basin. Corroboration of field and petrographic data with trends of major and trace elemental data and elemental ratios of the strata revealed that these excursions were coeval with reduced chemical weathering in the source area and significant reduction of siliciclastic influx to the depositional sites. The study also revealed the intrabasinal source of P, and minor sea-level fluctuations and resultant episodic sediment recycling as the causative factors. Considering the geographic locations of the three sections, the phosphorus anomalies seem to be controlled by a regional and/or basin-scale process, if not linked with global signals. Temporal resolution of these anomalies suggests that the processes were episodic and related to short term climate/relative sea-level cycles, the durations of which could be unraveled with high-resolution biostratigraphic data. 相似文献

The groundwater in the study area generally shows an acidic trend as evidenced by the low pH values, particularly in lateritic aquifers. Spatial assessment indicates that the southern part of the coastal aquifers shows elevated pollution levels during post monsoon season. Most of the groundwater is of Na-Cl facies in post monsoon and which slightly changes to Na-Mg-Cl facies during pre monsoon. Inter relationship between chemical parameters were also studied to understand the groundwater facies. Salinity hazard, percentage of sodium, SAR, integrated SAR and EC and RSC, were considered for judging the usefulness of groundwater for irrigation. Landuse map was prepared and water sample locations were superimposed on it, in a GIS platform, to assess the variation in water quality in different landuse classes. The outcome of the present study indicates that the concentration of certain parameters exceeds the recommended limits and hence mitigation measures are needed to be adopted to ensure safe drinking water. 相似文献

The present study deals with the biosorption of As(III) from aqueous solution using mango leaves powder (MLP) and rice husk (RH) in a batch operation. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transformation infrared spectrometry analysis shows the surface texture of biosorbents and metal binding of functional groups of before and after biosorption of As(III). The optimum pH was obtained at 7 and 6 with 7 and 6?g/l of dosage of MLP and RH, respectively. The adsorption of As(III) onto MLP and RH was favourably influenced by an increase in temperature. Equilibrium data were well represented by the Freundlich isotherm model. Nitric acid and ethylenediaminetetra acetic acid was found to be a better eluant for the desorption followed by hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide of As(III) with a maximum desorption efficiency of 69.5, 48.5 and 79.4, 86.3?%, respectively. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was found to best fitted of the experimental data over the equilibrium time at 32?h. The positive values of heat of adsorption (23.89?kJ/mol for MLP and 52.26?kJ/mol for RH) indicate the endothermic nature of the adsorption process. The thermodynamic study showed the spontaneous nature of the sorption of As(III) onto MLP and RH. 相似文献

An investigation was undertaken regarding the adsorption of different heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions using ??-diketone-functionalized styrene divinylbenzene resin under different experimental conditions such as initial concentration of metal ions, contact time, pH, and chelating capacity. The functionalization of resin was carried out by the condensation reaction of sodium salt of ??-diketones (pentane-1,3-dione) and chloromethylated styrene?Cdivinylbenzene resin in dichloromethane. Functionalized resin beads were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The batch method was employed using different metal ions solution from 5 to 15?mg/L at different contact times. The adsorption kinetics was tested for the pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order reaction at different experimental conditions. The rate constant of adsorption kinetic models were also calculated and good correlation coefficient (R 2?>?0.9941) was obtained for pseudo-second order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption value obtain for lead (0.725728?mg/g), chromium (0.9199?mg/g), nickel (0.4974?mg/g), cobalt (0.6196?mg/g) and cadmium (0.6519?mg/g) at equilibrium condition, which shows that ??-diketone-functionalized styrene divinylbenzene resin is an effective adsorbent for toxic metal ions. 相似文献

The hydrogeochemical study of groundwater in Dumka and Jamtara districts has been carried out to assess the major ion chemistry, hydrogeochemical processes and groundwater quality for domestic and irrigation uses. Thirty groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness, anions (F?, Cl?, NO3 ?, HCO3 ?, SO4 2?) and cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+). The analytical results show the faintly alkaline nature of water and dominance of Mg2+ and Ca2+ in cationic and HCO3 ? and Cl? in anionic abundance. The concentrations of alkaline earth metals (Ca2+?+?Mg2+) exceed the alkali metals (Na+?+?K+) and HCO3 ? dominates over SO4 2??+?Cl? concentrations in the majority of the groundwater samples. Ca?CMg?CHCO3 is the dominant hydrogeochemical facies in 60?% of the groundwater samples, while 33?% samples occur as a mixed chemical character of Ca?CMg?CCl hydrogeochemical facies. The water chemistry is largely controlled by rock weathering and ion exchange processes with secondary contribution from anthropogenic sources. The inter-elemental correlations and factor and cluster analysis of hydro-geochemical database suggest combined influence of carbonate and silicate weathering on solute acquisition processes. For quality assessment, analyzed parameter values were compared with Indian and WHO water quality standards. In majority of the samples, the analyzed parameters are well within the desirable limits and water is potable for drinking purposes. Total hardness and concentrations of TDS, Cl?, NO3 ? , Ca2+ and Mg2+ exceed the desirable limits at a few sites, however, except NO3 ? all these values were below the highest permissible limits. The calculated parameters such as sodium adsorption ratio, percent sodium (%Na) and residual sodium carbonate revealed excellent to good quality of groundwater for agricultural purposes, except at few sites where salinity and magnesium hazard (MH) values exceeds the prescribed limits and demands special management. 相似文献

The present study analyzes the built-up expansion of Ranchi urban agglomeration over a period of about 8 decades from 1927–2005.
Satellite images and topographical maps were used to evaluate land use dynamics during these periods. Built-up growth of 473.7%
during 1927–2005 was primarily at the expense of agricultural land along with reduction of natural water bodies reflects negative
impacts of built-up expansion, which increased many folds in recent decades. The built-up growth is also analyzed with reference
to population growth, land consumption rate and land transformation. The land loss due to increasing built-up growth of Ranchi
were compared with other capital regions and cities along with population increase to provide insight into the possible scenario

This paper present the results of a preliminary study to assess the potential of the visible, NIR and SWIR energy of the EMR
in differentiating iron ores of different grades in a rapid manner using hyperspectral radiometry. Using different iron ore
samples from Noamundi and Joda mines, Jharkhand and Orissa, states of India, certain spectro-radiometric measurements and
geochemical analysis were carried out and the results have been presented. It was observed that the primary spectral characteristics
of these iron ores lie in the 850 to 900 nm and 650–750 nm regions. The spectral parameters for each curve used for studying
the iron ores are: (i) the slopes of the spectral curve in 685–725 nm region; (ii) position of the peak with respect to wavelength
in 730–750 nm region and (iii) radius of curvature of the absorption trough in the 850–900 nm region. Comparison of these
spectral parameters and the geochemistry of the samples indicates that the position of the peak of the curve in 730–750 nm
region shifts towards longer wavelength with increasing iron oxide content, while the slope of the curvature in the 685–725 nm
region has a strong negative correlation with the iron oxide content of the samples. Similarly, a strong negative correlation
is observed between the radius of curvature of the 850–900 nm absorption trough and the iron oxide content. Such strong correlations
indicate that hyperspectral radiometry in the visible and NIR regions can give a better estimate and quantification of the
grades of iron ores. This study has demonstrated that generation of empirical models using hyperspectral radiometric techniques
is helpful to quantify the grade of iron ores with limited geochemical analysis. 相似文献

In the recent decade, operational seasonal prediction systems based on initialized coupled models have been developed. An analysis of how the predictability of seasonal means in the initialized coupled predictions evolves with lead-time is presented. Because of the short lead-time, such an analysis for the temporal behavior of seasonal predictability involves a mix of both the predictability of the first and the second kind. The analysis focuses on the lead-time dependence of ensemble mean variance, and the forecast spread. Further, the analysis is for a fixed target season of December?CJanuary?CFebruary, and is for sea surface temperature, rainfall, and 200-mb height. The analysis is based on a large set of hindcasts from an initialized coupled seasonal prediction system. Various aspects of predictability of the first and the second kind are highlighted for variables with long (for example, SST), and fast (for example, atmospheric) adjustment time scale. An additional focus of the analysis is how the predictability in the initialized coupled seasonal predictions compares with estimates based on the AMIP simulations. The results indicate that differences in the set up of AMIP simulations and coupled predictions, for example, representation of air?Csea interactions, and evolution of forecast spread from initial conditions do not change fundamental conclusion about the seasonal predictability. A discussion of the analysis presented herein, and its implications for the use of AMIP simulations for climate attribution, and for time-slice experiments to provide regional information, is also included. 相似文献
