Summary In this paper the results of an urban measurement campaign are presented. The experiment took place from July 1995 to February 1996 in Basel, Switzerland. A total of more than 2000 undisturbed 30-minute runs of simultaneous measurements of the fluctuations of the wind vector u′, v′, w′ and the sonic temperature θ s ′ at three different heights (z=36, 50 and 76 m a.g.l.) are analysed with respect to the integral statistics and their spectral behaviour. Estimates of the zero plane displacement height d calculated by the temperature variance method yield a value of 22 m for the two lower levels, which corresponds to 0.92 h (the mean height of the roughness elements). At all three measurement heights the dimensionless standard deviation σ w /u * is systematically smaller than the Monin-Obukhov similarity function for the inertial sublayer, however, deviations are smaller compared to other urban turbulence studies. The σθ* values follow the inertial sublayer prediction very close for the two lowest levels, while at the uppermost level significant deviations are observed. Profiles of normalized velocity and temperature variances show a clear dependence on stability. The profile of friction velocity u * is similar to the profiles reported in other urban studies with a maximum around z/h=2.1. Spectral characteristics of the wind components in general show a clear dependence on stability and dimensionless measurement height z/h with a shift of the spectral peak to lower frequencies as thermal stability changes from stable to unstable conditions and as z/h decreases. Velocity spectra follow the −2/3 slope in the inertial subrange region and the ratios of spectral energy densities S w (f)/S u (f) approach the value of 4/3 required for local isotropy in the inertial subrange. Velocity spectra and spectral peaks fit best to the well established surface layer spectra from Kaimal et al. (1972) at the uppermost level at z/h=3.2. In a total of 181 photographic spectrograms, obtained at the Manuel Foster Observatory of the Catholic University in Santiago (Chile), the equivalent widths of the absorption lines HeI 4471 and MgII 4481 have been determined for 10 selected southern Be stars and 4 normal B-type stars. The mean equivalent widths of each star are compared to published mean values from largers samples of B stars. On the average, Be stars coincide with normal B-type stars in their equivalent width. However, a striking difference between rapidly and slowly rotating stars in their line ratios (HeI/MgII) was found, which is probably an artifact due to a systematic misclassification of spectral types of rapidly rotating B stars (v sini>200 km s–1). Six of the ten Be stars show evidence for variability in HeI and/or MgII with time-scales shorter than a few days and amplitudes up to a factor 2 in equivalent width. Line variability occurs in the entire range of projected rotation velocity (70 km s–1<v sini<350 km s–1), but seems to be restricted to spectral types B2-B4. In addition, variations at longer time-scales (years) were observed in two cases. Three of the variable stars (HR 4074, HR 4537, and Ara) present correlated variations in both lines, one ( Cen) anti-correlated variability. We interpret our results in terms of nonradial pulsations and stress the importance to study the HeI/MgII lines and their variability in a larger sample of Be, Bn, and normal B stars, including archival material in order to follow-up line variability for several decades in the past.  相似文献

In 1989–1990 the SeaMARC II side-looking sonar and swath bathymetric system imaged more than 80 000 km2 of the seafloor in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea and southern Arctic Ocean. One of our main goals was to investigate the morphotectonic evolution of the ultra-slow spreading Knipovich Ridge from its oblique (115° ) intersection with the Mohns Ridge in the south to its boundary with the Molloy Transform Fault in the north, and to determine whether or not the ancient Spitsbergen Shear Zone continued to play any involvement in the rise axis evolution and segmentation. Structural evidence for ongoing northward rift propagation of the Mohns Ridge into the ancient Spitsbergen Shear Zone (forming the Knipovich Ridge in the process) includes ancient deactivated and migrated transforms, subtle V-shaped-oriented flank faults which have their apex at the present day Molloy Transform, and rift related faults that extend north of the present Molloy Transform Fault. The Knipovich Ridge is segmented into distinct elongate basins; the bathymetric inverse of the very-slow spreading Reykjanes Ridge to the south. Three major fault directions are detected: the N-S oriented rift walls, the highly oblique en-echelon faults, which reside in the rift valley, and the structures, defining the orientation of many of the axial highs, which are oblique to both the rift walls and the faults in the axial rift valley. The segmentation of this slow spreading center is dominated by quasi stationary, focused magma centers creating (axial highs) located between long oblique rift basins. Present day segment discontinuities on the Knipovich Ridge are aligned along highly oblique, probably strike-slip faults, which could have been created in response to rotating shear couples within zones of transtension across the multiple faults of the Spitsbergen Shear Zone. Fault interaction between major strike slip shears may have lead to the formation of en-echelon pull apart basins. The curved stress trajectories create arcuate faults and subsiding elongate basins while focusing most of the volcanism through the boundary faults. As a result, the Knipovich Ridge is characterized by Underlapping magma centers, with long oblique rifts. This style of basin-dominated segmentation probably evolved in a simple shear detachment fault environment which led to the extreme morphotectonic and geophysical asymmetries across the rise axis. The influence of the Spitsbergen Shear Zone on the evolution of the Knipovich Ridge is the primary reason that the segment discontinuities are predominantly volcanic. Fault orientation data suggest that different extension directions along the Knipovich Ridge and Mohns Ridge (280° vs. 330°, respectively) cause the crust on the western side of the intersection of these two ridges to buckle and uplift via compression as is evidenced by the uplifted western wall province and the large 60 mGal free air gravity anomalies in this area. In addition, the structural data suggest that the northwards propagation of the spreading center is ongoing and that a `normal' pure shear spreading regime has not evolved along this ridge. To date, evidence for the degradation of benzene under anaerobic conditions has been established only in few studies under field and laboratory conditions. Recently, we demonstrated the mineralization of benzene under sulfate-reducing conditions in a large-scale column experiment at a field site by balancing electrons (Vogt et al. in Biodegradation, 2007, in press). Here, from a modelling approach, kinetic Monod parameters are estimated for the degradation of benzene in the columns, Monod kinetics proved useful to simulate benzene concentrations at the column outflow. The uncertainty of the obtained parameters is determined in a sensitivity analysis. A total mass of degraded benzene of 23 g or 80% of the total influx over a period of three months was calculated. The estimated maximum utilization rate was calculated to be around 70 times lower than from aerobic benzene degradation experiments.  相似文献

We have used the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) on the 2.3 m telescope at Siding Spring Observatory to map the [O III] 5007 Å dynamics of the young oxygen-rich supernova remnant N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud. From the resultant data cube, we have been able to reconstruct the full 3D structure of the system of [O III] filaments. The majority of the ejecta form a ring of ~12 pc in diameter inclined at an angle of ~25 degrees to the line of sight. We conclude that SNR N132D is approaching the end of the reverse shock phase before entering the fully thermalized Sedov phase of evolution. We speculate that the ring of oxygen-rich material comes from ejecta in the equatorial plane of a bipolar explosion, and that the overall shape of the SNR is strongly influenced by the pre-supernova mass loss from the progenitor star. We find tantalizing evidence of a polar jet associated with a very fast oxygen-rich knot, and clear evidence that the central star has interacted with one or more dense clouds in the surrounding ISM.  相似文献

Water, sediment and soil in a region with severe Hg contamination resulting from Hg mining and retorting continue to receive anthropogenic Hg loading from discarded tailings and mine waste calcine piles, even after mining has ended. Crucial for potential long-term mobilization and uptake in biota, however, are chemical forms of Hg in the environment. In order to assess potential mobility and bioavailability of Hg in contaminated areas, a refined sequential extraction technique was used for Hg in soil and sediment, allowing identification of the following conceptual Hg fractions: elemental Hg, exchangeable Hg, strongly-bound Hg and organically-bound Hg.  相似文献

The pore waters of CH4-containing sediments of the Håkon Mosby Mud Volcano were rich in NH+ 4, Br-, and I-; exhibited a high total alkalinity; but were poor in Cl-and SO2- 4. The geological evidence and our data suggest that organic matter decomposition in preglacial or early interglacial sediments took place during early diagenesis (bacterial processes) and during metamorphism (thermogenic processes under the 3100-m-thick layer of glacial sediments), accompanied by mud volcano fluid generation. It is argued that the CH4of the mud volcano sediments has a mixed, biogenic and thermogenic, origin.  相似文献

The high thermal gradient and heat flow >1000?mW?m-2 on Håkon Mosby Mud Volcano are ascribed to rapid transport of pore water, mud, and gas in a narrow, deep conduit within a 3.1-km-thick glacial sediment unit. The instability is caused by rapid loading of dense glacial sediments on less dense oozes. Changes in pressure–temperature conditions by sudden, large-scale downslope mass movement may induce structural deformation, opening transient pathways from the base of the glacial sediments to the sea floor. This model may also explain slope maxima elsewhere on the margin.  相似文献
