Several well-preserved Late Pleistocene spit systems occur uplifted in northern Jylland, Denmark. Their present-day morphological expression allows detailed study of spit growth patterns while the internal sedimentological organisation can be examined in a series of pits distributed along the length of the spits. Two characteristic vertical sequences are recognized in the systems. The first (Sequence I) consists of a giant-scale cross-bedded foreset unit, overlain by topset and beach units, while the second (Sequence II) consists of the foreset unit overlain by bar-trough and beach units. The two sequence types pass laterally into each other with a short overlap zone. They can be interpreted in terms of Meistrell's (1966, 1972) model for spit-platform growth based on scaled wave tank experiments. The giant-scale cross-bedded unit corresponds to prograding of a coarse-grained subaqueous spit-platform while the topset, bar-trough and beach units reflect the growth of the subaerial spit. The alternation between sequence I and II reflects the inversely related growth of the spit and platform structures: when the rate of subaqueous platform progradation declines, the subaerial spit grows uniformly, and when the platform progrades uniformly spit growth declines. The model is probably only valid for relatively coarse-grained systems because only these deposits would have a relatively steep front. The water depth in which the spit system progrades and thus bottom topography, determines the thickness of the giant-scale cross-bedded foreset unit because the water depth over the top of the platform is relatively constant. If the water is less than a few metres deep the spit-platform is not developed as seen where the Late Pleistocene spit systems prograded over elevations of the sea bottom. Conversely, the correct recognition of spit-platform sequences allows precise determination of sea-level and water depth at the time of formation. Finally, the model adds one further mode of formation of giant-scale cross-bedding to those already known from fluvial transverse, lateral and point bars, subtidal sand waves and Gilbert deltas.  相似文献

Cement-porosity relationships are described from the Lower Triassic Sherwood Sandstone Group and the Middle Jurassic Ravenscar Group in the United Kingdom. Calcite cemented sandstones display a variety of replacement textures, with preferential replacement of grains and of overgrowth faces with high free-surface energy. Dolomite and siderite cemented sandstones display similar textures but replacement is less specific and euhedral overgrowth surfaces are commonly embayed by carbonates. Examination of the more porous sandstones with the scanning electron microscope reveals a range of pitting and embayment textures in authigenic overgrowths and in detrital grains. These range from small ‘v’-shaped notches and pits, through regular and irregular shaped embayments, into large depressions. These textures appear to be morphologically similar to the quartz surfaces seen in thin sections of carbonate cemented sandstones, and are interpreted to have been formed by the dissolution of pore-filling and grain replacive authigenic carbonates. This is confirmed by examination of experimentally exhumed overgrowth surfaces from carbonate cemented sandstones. These textures indicate that part of the intergranular porosity in these sediments is secondary in origin, and has been generated by the dissolution of carbonate cements. The identification of such textures may lead to a more confident interpretation of the nature of intergranular porosity in the subsurface.  相似文献

The 230 km2 Proterozoic Bjerkreim—Sokndal layered instrusionhas a monzonoritic bulk composition and comprises a 6 km thick,broadly leuconoritic Layered Series (LS) overlain by unlayeredmangerite and quartz mangerite. In the Bjerkreim lobe the LScomprises six megacyclic units (MCU 0, IA, IB, II, 11 and IV)in a syncline. This lobe is surrounded by migmatitic gneisses;the roof to the instrusion is missing. The mg-number opx, An% and whole-rock initial 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios (Sr0) displaybroadly parallel trends through MCUs II and III, and into MCUIV, with decreasing mg-number (75–58) and An % (50–40)accompanying increasing Sr0 (0.7050–0.7085). This correlationbreaks down in the upper part of MCU IV and mangerite; the quartzmangerite has Sr0 values of 0.7085. Abrupt reversals occur acrossthe MCU boundaries. The LS crystallized on the floor of a periodically replenishedmagma chamber that was continually assimilating country rockgneisses. Strong compositional zoning of the magma developedas a result of repeated replenishments with relatively dense,primitive ferrobasaltic magma (Sr0 = 0.7049) along the floorand the development of extensive buoyant roof melts. Assimilationtook place on a massive scale (up to 50%) in the upper partsof the chamber. Zebra dolomites, characterized by a repetition of dark grey (a) and light (b) coloured dolomite sheets building up abbabba-sequences, occur in Dinantian strata from deep boreholes (> 2000 m) south of the Brabant-Wales Massif in Belgium. These zebra dolomite sequences are several tens of metres thick. The dark grey dolomite sheets (a) consist of non-planar crystals, 80–150 μm in diameter. These crystals display a mottled red–orange luminescence and are interpreted to be replacive in origin. The white dolomite sheets (b) consist of coarse crystalline nonplanar b1 dolomite, which evolves outwards into transparent saddle shaped b2 dolomite. The b1 dolomites possess a mottled red–orange luminescence similar to the a dolomites, while the saddle shaped b2 rims display red to dark brown luminescent-zones. The b1 dolomites are possibly partly replacive and partly cavity filling. Their b2 rims display criteria typical for a cement origin. Locally, cavities exist between two succeeding white dolomite sheets. These cavities make up ≈5% of the zebra rocks and are locally filled by saddle shaped ankerite and/or xenomorphic ferroan calcite. Geochemical and fluid inclusion data (Th ≈ 120 °C) indicate a burial diagenetic origin for these zebra dolomites. The a and b1 dolomites are characterized by similar geochemical compositions and fluid inclusion data pointing toward a related origin. To explain the development of the zebra textures, suprahydrostatic pressures in conjunction with late Variscan tectonic compression are invoked. A model involving dolomitizing fluids expelled during the Variscan orogeny is proposed. An overpressured system is also invoked to explain the important porosity development, the creation of centimetre-scale subvertical displacements of the zebra pattern and the microfractures affecting the b1b2 dolomite crystals.  相似文献

High-resolution palaeoecological proxies of pollen, macrofossils and diatoms from an isolation lake provide a long-term record of the Holocene landscape history and shoreline displacement on the Biskopsmåla Peninsula in central Blekinge, SE Sweden. During the Preboreal/Boreal transition, the peninsula was sparsely vegetated by woodlands, along with lateglacial dwarf shrub/steppe communities. The lake basin was isolated from the shallow Yoldia Sea during this time. The regional climate improved from 10 700 cal. BP, evident as progressive expansion of Pinus-dominated mixed forest with deciduous trees. The lake basin was probably connected with the Ancylus Lake during the period 10700–10 100 cal. BP. Subsequently the basin became isolated again, corresponding to the Early Littorina Sea phase. Replacement of freshwater diatoms by those with brackish-water affinity at 8100 cal. BP indicates the initial transgression of the Littorina Sea in this basin. But not until 7500 cal. BP were brackish conditions fully established. Peaks of brackish-marine diatoms and dinoflagellates during 7500–7000 cal. BP indicate increased saltwater inflow to the Baltic Sea in response to global meltwater pulse 3. However, interactive changes in seagrass and stonewort macrofossil concentrations suggest that three minor transgressions during 5900–5300, 5000–4700 and 4400–4000 cal. BP occurred locally, associated with centennial-scale variations in regional wind pattern or coastal storminess. By 3000 cal. BP, the lake basin was finally isolated from the Baltic, and thereafter the landscape on the peninsula became gradually more influenced by human activities.  相似文献

分析了冲绳海槽北部的CSH1岩芯沉积物中矿物组成、化学元素质量分数和粒度的变化规律,研究结果表明,在全新世期间,日本九州岛发生了2次大规模火山喷发活动,造成大量的火山物质沉积在冲绳海槽北部。从岩芯最上部的沉积物中可识别出2层火山碎屑沉积,它们都具有沉积物粒径突然变粗、SiO2和Na2O等化合物的质量分数突然增加以及粘土矿物、挥发份、Fe2O3、MgO、CaO和Sr的质量分数迅速下降等特征。沉积物粒度数据的端员分析结果表明,冲绳海槽北部全新世沉积物中的硅酸盐碎屑是由陆源碎屑物质和火山灰按不同的比例混合而成的。有火山物质混入的沉积物的粒度分布多呈现双峰模式,粒度众数值分别为74.3和7.81μm。浮游有孔虫壳体的AMS14C测年结果表明,2层火山碎屑所对应的火山喷发年代分别为7 210和10 870 cal.aBP。其中前者与K-Ah火山的喷发时间一致,后者可能与Kuju火山在12~10 cal.kaBP期间的喷发有关。  相似文献

We have developed a set of four synthetic standards for the rare earth and high field strength elements designed for use in the determination of those elements in silicates. The base material is a glass nominally at the eutectic of the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 ternary system. The nominal doping level was 2 wt% of the elements as oxides. South of the Caledonian Brabant-Wales Massif a more than 200 m thick Tournaisian to Lower Visean replacive dolomite unit can be followed for several hundred kilometres from the Boulonnais (France) to Aachen (Germany). Field observations, of features such as karst cavities occurring at the top of the Lower Visean dolomite which are filled by Lower Visean crinoidal limestone, indicate that dolomitization and karstification took place during the Early Visean. This early development of the dolomite is in agreement with the presence of stylolites cutting the dolomite fabric. The minor element composition of the majority of the dolomites remains almost uniform throughout the entire studied area. Values for Fe, Mn, Na and Sr are normally in the range 700–4700 ppm, 15–400 ppm, 80–300 ppm and 50–200 ppm, respectively. The δ13C values (range-0.72 to +5.31%o) mainly reflect the carbon isotopic composition of the precursor limestones. The δ18O values, in contrast, are highly variable: ranging from-19.15 to +0.85%o. This rather large range of δ18O values is explained by multiple-step re-equilibration/recrystallization during progressive burial and subsequent uplift of the dolomites. These processes are also responsible for the high 87Sr/86Sr values of the dolomites which range from about 0.7088 to 0.7098. They are distinctly more radiogenic than Lower Visean marine carbonates (0.7076–0.7078). Correlation, however, of δ18O values or 87Sr/86Sr ratios with dolomite and/or cathodoluminescenec (CL) textures has not been very successful. This suggests that recrystallization may remain unrecognized if only petrographic techniques are used. Nevertheless, certain CL textures can be related to specific interactions with the ambient recrystallizing fluids.  相似文献

The geomorphology of a coarse clastic coastal landscape at Tuapaat (69°24'N 52°36'W), southeastern Disko Island, central West Greenland, is described, and a coastal morpho-stratigraphy of the landscape is constructed. 14C ages on marine shells, whale bones, peat and gyttja are used to construct relative sea level changes throughout the Holocene. The emergence of SE Disko Island occurred in the early part of the Holocene. The Holocene marine limit is situated ca. 80m a.s.l. Between 4.7 and 1.0ka BP, the relative sea level approached the present sea level and it has probably been below present sea level between 4.7 ka BP and the present. The morpho-stratigraphy in the lowest part of the coastal landscape at Tuapaat suggests a complex late Holocene relative sea level history which includes at least 3-4 transgressions during the last ca. 2.5 ka.  相似文献
