Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 17 parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in surface sediments from nine stations in the Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Ionian Sea, Southern Italy). Total PAH concentrations ranged from 380 to 12,750 microg/kg d.w., while total PCB levels ranged from 2 to 1684 microg/kg d.w.; this values were higher than those found in others marine coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea. For PAHs, low molecular weight/high molecular weight, phenanthrene/anthracene and fluoranthene/pyrene ratio were used for discriminating between pyrolitic and petroleum origin. Results showed that PAHs were mainly of pyrolitic origin. PCB and PAH levels in sediments were compared with Sediments Quality Guidelines (ERM-ERL, TEL-PEL indexes) for evaluation probable toxic effects on marine organism. Finally, ERM and PEL quotients were used to evaluate the degree to which chemicals exceed guidelines. Results suggest an ecotoxicological risk for benthic organisms mainly in the first inlet, where high concentrations of PCBs were found in sediments influenced by harbour activities.  相似文献

During the warm seasons of 1998–2004, the naturally-acidic (pH2.2) Lake Caviahue was sampled for conductivity, temperature, oxygen, light, nutrients, and phytoplankton (density, biomass and chlorophyll a) with a view to studying the summer phytoplankton population changes with relation to environmental factors, as well as the significance of nitrogen limitation on the phytoplankton yield. Lake Caviahue is characterized by its low transparency, CO2, and N concentration; significant P values; a distinctive vertical distribution of phytoplankton biomass with high values along the water column; and sometimes maximum meta-hypolimnion values. Biodiversity is very low as a result of extreme environmental conditions, Chlorophyceae being the prevailing algae group. Two types of bioassays were carried out to assess nitrogen limitation. For the first bioassay, a solution of ammonium–nitrogen chloride and/or wastewater (rich in ammonium and phosphorus) was used, while one of the lake's sediments was the source of nutrients for the second bioassay. Contrary to the case of acidic mining lakes, N-ammonium proved to be a significant supportive capacity limiting factor as to phytoplankton yield. The present paper provides for the first time information on phytoplankton nitrogen limitation in a naturally-acidic lake.  相似文献

Research to understand and remediate coastal pollution is moving toward a multitiered approach in which traditional enumeration of fecal indicators is accompanied by molecular analysis of a variety of targets. Technology that rapidly detects multiple microbial contaminants would benefit from such an approach. The Luminex 100 system is a suspension array that assays multiple analytes rapidly in a single well of a microtiter plate. The ability of the system to simultaneously detect multiple fecal indicating bacteria in environmental samples was tested. Primer/probe sets were designed to simultaneously detect the following fecal indicators: the Bacteroides fragilis group, Enterococcus spp., Escherichia coli and Shigella spp., Bacteroides distasonis, and Ent. faecalis. Specificity and sensitivity of the Luminex probes was tested against laboratory cultures. In addition, sequencing, culture plate testing, and specificity testing with environmental isolates were steps taken to validate the function of the assay with environmental samples. Luminex response to cultures and to environmental samples was consistent with sequencing results, suggesting that the technology has the potential to simultaneously detect multiple targets for coastal water quality applications, particularly as progress is made to efficiently extract DNA from water and sediment matrices.  相似文献

Within shear bands in sands, deformation is largely non-affine, stemming primarily from buckling of well-known force chains and also from vortex-like structures. In the spirit of current trends toward multiscale modeling, understanding the links between these mesoscale deformational entities and corresponding macroscale response will form the basis for the next generation of sand behavioral models and may also aid in efforts to understand jamming–unjamming transitions in dense granular flows in general. Experimental methods to quantify and characterize such subscale kinematics, in particular in real sands, will play critical roles in these efforts. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is a fast growing experimental technique to nondestructively measure surface displacements from digital images. Here, DIC has been employed to identify and characterize the development of vortex structures inside shear bands formed in dense sands during plane strain compression. A rigorous assessment of the DIC method has been performed, in particular for subscale behavioral characterization in unbonded granular solids, and guidelines are offered for accurate implementation. While DIC systematically overestimates shear band thickness, a methodology has been devised to compensate for this overestimation. Shear band thickness for four different uniform sands were found to range between 6 and 9 grain diameters, and for a well-graded sand between 8 and 9.5 grain diameters. These determinations agree with visual inspections of grain kinematics from the image data, as well as recent theoretical predictions.  相似文献

We describe the current French ideas for the instrumentation of the second generation of the VLTI. Instruments concepts addressed include: integrated optics beam combiner, extension of MIDI to a four beam facility, extension of AMBER to the visible and a densified pupil direct imaging beam combiner. Jellyfish are often the most prominent components of plankton, with severe consequences for fisheries and tourism. However, in tropical regions, there is much uncertainty about these consequences due to the lack of basic data. Our objective was to improve the knowledge about jellyfish in the Western Atlantic, with an emphasis on understanding diversity, abundance, and distribution patterns. Samples were collected at 34 stations in 1995 using a 300‐μm‐mesh Bongo net. The 21 species identified belonged to Hydromedusae (11), Siphonophora (nine), and Scyphomedusae (one). The overall mean density was low (5.2 ± 5.3 ind. m?3). Total Hydromedusae biomass was 130.86 mg C m?3, and total Siphonophora biomass was 19.04 mg C m?3. Chelophyes appendiculata (Eschscholtz, 1829) was the most frequent species captured in the oceanic samples, and Aglaura hemistoma (Péron & Lesueur, 1810) was the most common in the neritic region. The latter species is sometimes characterized as a bloom associated with the most polluted and eutrophic river plumes. The main role of jellyfish species in the area is as a higher‐order carnivore. A cross‐shelf significant difference (P < 0.05) was registered, with higher species numbers in oceanic regions and higher densities and biomass in neritic regions.  相似文献

Absorption‐line systems detected in high resolution quasar spectra can be used to compare the value of dimensionless fundamental constants such as the fine‐structure constant, α, and the proton‐to‐electron mass ratio, μ = mp/me, as measured in remote regions of the Universe to their value today on Earth. In recent years, some evidence has emerged of small temporal and also spatial variations in α on cosmological scales which may reach a fractional level of ≈ 10 ppm (parts per million). We are conducting a Large Programme of observations with the Very Large Telescope's Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES), and are obtaining high‐resolution (R ≈ 60000) and high signal‐to‐noise ratio (S/N ≈ 100) spectra calibrated specifically to study the variations of the fundamental constants. We here provide a general overview of the Large Programme and report on the first results for these two constants, discussed in detail in Molaro et al. (2013) and Rahmani et al. (2013). A stringent bound for Δα /α is obtained for the absorber at zabs = 1.6919 towards HE 2217‐2818. The absorption profile is complex with several very narrow features, and is modeled with 32 velocity components. The relative variation in α in this system is +1.3 ± 2.4stat ± 1.0sys ppm if Al II λ 1670 Å and three FeII transitions are used, and +1.1 ± 2.6stat ppm in a slightly different analysis with only FeII transitions used. This is one of the tightest bounds on α ‐variation from an individual absorber and reveals no evidence for variation in α at the 3‐ppm precision level (1σ confidence). The expectation at this sky position of the recently‐reported dipolar variation of α is (3.2–5.4) ± 1.7 ppm depending on dipole model used and this constraint of Δα /α at face value is not supporting this expectation but not inconsistent with it at the 3σ level. For the proton‐to‐electron mass ratio the analysis of the H2 absorption lines of the zabs ≈ 2.4018 damped Lyα system towards HE 0027–1836 provides Δμ /μ = (–7.6 ± 8.1stat ± 6.3sys) ppm which is also consistent with a null variation. The cross‐correlation analysis between individual exposures taken over three years and comparison with almost simultaneous asteroid observations revealed the presence of a possible wavelength dependent velocity drift as well as of inter‐order distortions which probably dominate the systematic error and are a significant obstacle to achieve more accurate measurements. CUBES is a high-efficiency, medium-resolution (R~20,000) ground based UV (300–400 nm) spectrograph, to be installed in the cassegrain focus of one of ESO’s VLT unit telescopes in 2017/18. The CUBES project is a joint venture between ESO and IAG/USP, and LNA/MCTI. CUBES will provide access to a wealth of new and relevant information for stellar as well as extragalactic sources. Main science cases include the study of beryllium and heavy elements in metal-poor stars, the direct determination of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen abundances by study of molecular bands in the UV range, as well as the study of active galactic nuclei and the quasar absorption lines. With a streamlined modern instrument design, high efficiency dispersing elements and UV-sensitive detectors, it will give a significant gain in sensitivity over existing ground based medium-high resolution spectrographs, enabling vastly increased sample sizes accessible to the astronomical community. We present here a brief overview of the project including the status, science cases and a discussion of the design options.  相似文献

Coronae may not be tectonovolcanic features ‘unique to Venus’ because both the processes that lead to corona formation, and their final tectonovolcanic output (formation of domes, plateaus, extensional rings, etc.), are also found on Earth. Large-scale corona formation processes on Earth may be restricted (because of plate motion) but not absent. The same applies to resurfacing processes. We here suggest that at least, the early stages of corona formation can be recognized in intraplate tectonic settings on Earth. The African plate displays many Cenozoic examples of plume-related domal uplifts and volcanism (e.g., Hoggar, Tibesti, Darfur, Ethiopia). Furthermore, the east African rift system (EARS) around lake Victoria displays many striking features that resemble those of the Venus coronae associated with extensional belts. Among these are the following: (1) an overall elliptical shape; (2) the existence of a mantle plume (Kenya plume) centered beneath lake Victoria; (3) a central plateau (east African plateau); (4) an external extensional belt (the EARS east and west branches); (5) doming processes (Kenya dome); and last but not least (6) volcanism.
