Improvement in the quality of river water filtered through a 17-m thick sand-gravel unconfined aquifer at a production well surrounded by surface-water bodies, in Haridwar (India), was studied. Distances between surface water sources and the production well are more than 115 m, and the shortest travel times are 77 and 84 days for monsoon and non-monsoon periods, respectively. During the monsoon period, surface water exhibited increased turbidity by 50–100 times, bacterial count of around 10 times and decreased electrical conductivity of around 0.6 times compared to non-monsoon samples. The quality of abstracted bank filtrate, however, was found not to significantly vary. In non-monsoon months, riverbank filtration resulted in a reduction of turbidity and coliforms by 1 and 3 logs, respectively. For monsoonal months, this increased to more than 2 and 4 logs in turbidity and coliforms reduction, respectively. UV absorbance was also found to be reduced to about 1 log during monsoon season. Results from column studies confirmed that a retention time of around 5 days is adequate to achieve more than 99.9% removal of coliforms.  相似文献

Landslides are very common in high-altitude Himalayan terrains. Major roads in the Himalayas are frequently blocked due to heavy landslides and remain closed for long periods of time. Permanent mitigatory solutions to these landslides are required to keep the highways open. Lanta Khola, located 71.2 km north of Gangtok (capital of the Indian state of Sikkim), is one of the oldest landslides on the North Sikkim Highway and is active since 1975. The rock types on either side of the landslide are different (augen gneiss in the east and metapelitic schist in the west), and it is believed that the Main Central Thrust passes through the slide zone. Since the slide is invariably activated in the aftermath of heavy rainfall, it is important to identify the subsurface structures that channel water below the landslide surface in order to understand the triggers of slide activity. This can only be accomplished by geophysical survey; however, an appropriate geophysical technique that can be applied in such terrains must be identified. Very low-frequency (VLF) electromagnetic survey was performed over the Lanta Khola landside in order to delineate subsurface structures. Although a very limited number of VLF transmitters are available worldwide, it was possible to pick up VLF signals from a number of VLF stations even in this high-altitude mountainous terrain. VLF measurements along five profiles perpendicular to the geological strike were recorded, and a high conducting zone was delineated from the VLF observations. This conducting zone correlates with the low resistive zone identified from gradient resistivity profiling. The anomalies confirm that there is a water-saturated zone (soggy zone) even in the subsurface of the slide parallel to the geological gneiss–schist contact within the Lanta Khola slide. This indicates that the conductive feature correlates with a weak water-saturated debris layer that lies along the slide and is parallel to the geological contact. Resistive structures on either side of the landslide zone can thus be correlated with the stable ground. It is necessary to drain out water from the soggy zone to minimize slide activity since this zone appears to penetrate into the body of the slide.  相似文献

To support the GPM mission which is homologous to its predecessor, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), this study has been undertaken to evaluate the accuracy of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission multi-satellite precipitation analysis (TMPA) daily-accumulated precipitation products for 5 years (2008–2012) using the statistical methods and contingency table method. The analysis was performed on daily, monthly, seasonal and yearly basis. The TMPA precipitation estimates were also evaluated for each grid point i.e. 0.25° × 0.25° and for 18 rain gauge stations of the Betwa River basin, India. Results indicated that TMPA precipitation overestimates the daily and monthly precipitation in general, particularly for the middle sub-basin in the non-monsoon season. Furthermore, precision of TMPA precipitation estimates declines with the decrease of altitude at both grid and sub-basin scale. The study also revealed that TMPA precipitation estimates provide better accuracy in the upstream of the basin compared to downstream basin. Nevertheless, the detection capability of daily TMPA precipitation improves with increase in altitude for drizzle rain events. However, the detection capability decreases during non-monsoon and monsoon seasons when capturing moderate and heavy rain events, respectively. The veracity of TMPA precipitation estimates was improved during the rainy season than during the dry season at all scenarios investigated. The analyses suggest that there is a need for better precipitation estimation algorithm and extensive accuracy verification against terrestrial precipitation measurement to capture the different types of rain events more reliably over the sub-humid tropical regions of India.  相似文献

Wind-wave relationship from SEASAT radar altimeter data   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We present a nonlinear relationship between ocean surface wind at 10 m height (U 10 ) and significant wave height of wind-generated gravity waves, (H 1/3)gw, over the open oceans using SEASAT radar altimeter data. The data represent a variety of fetches, durations and strength of winds. Concurrent measurement of significant wave height, (H 1/3 ), which may contain a measure of swell and U 10 obtained from the processed geophysical data record (GDR) of the SEASAT radar altimeter were used in the analysis. The total wave energy, E alt, characterised by altimeter H 1/3 measurements was compared with the energy of a fully developed sea, E fd derived from U 10 measurements using the Pierson-Moskowitz model. The criteria E alt E fd was used in data selection to minimise the influence of swell. (H 1/3)gw thus obtained was used in a regression in terms of U 10 in a second-degree polynomial. Verification with independent radar altimeter data confirmed the validity of the proposed wind-wave model, which could be used for operational wave forecasting.  相似文献

An investigation has been made of the structure of sea-breeze fronts observed at Thumba mostly during the months of December to April using data from a Doppler SODAR and in situ measurements of wind components, humidity and temperature. The study shows that the vertical wind structure observed in the SODAR height range provides a distinct signature of the passage of a front and that the intensity of the front is decided by the intensity and direction of the prevailing winds as well as the amount of rotation of the wind vector during the onset of the sea-breeze. Spectral analyses of vertical winds during the passage of the front reveal a dominant periodicity of about 6 min for strong sea-breeze fronts.  相似文献

Summary The Karimnagar granulite terrain is an integral part of the Eastern Dharwar Craton (EDC). It has received much interest because of the only reported granulite facies rocks in the EDC. These granulites contain quartz-free sapphirine-spinel-bearing granulites, kornerupine – bearing granulites, mafic granulites, orthopyroxene-cordierite gneisses, charnockites, amphibolites, dolerite dykes, granite gneisses, quartzites and banded magnetite quartzite. The orthopyroxene-cordierite gneisses occur as enclaves within granite-gneiss in association with banded magnetite quartzites, charnockites and amphibolites. The observed reaction textures, spectacular as they are, have an extraordinary information content within a tiny domain. Coronas, symplectites and resorption textures are of particular interest as they reflect discontinuous or continuous reactions under changing physical conditions. The main mineral assemblages encountered in these gneisses are orthopyroxene – cordierite – biotite – plagioclase – perthite – quartz and garnet – orthopyroxene – cordierite – biotite – quartz – plagioclase – perthite ± sillimanite. Multiphase reaction textures in conjunction with mineral chemical data in the KFMASH system indicate the following reactions: Based on chemographic relationships and petrogenetic grids in the K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O (KFMASH) system, a sequence of prograde (early stage), isothermal decompression (middle stage) and retrograde (late stage) reactions (‘back reactions’ and hydration reactions) are inferred. Relatively lower PT estimates (0.35 GPa/550–750 °C) obtained from the different geothermobarometers are attributed to late Fe–Mg re-equilibration during cooling. Therefore, the convergence method has been applied to retrieve simultaneously the PT conditions of the thermal peak of metamorphism. The near thermal peak condition of metamorphism estimated by the convergence method are 850 °C/0.62 GPa. The PT estimates define a retrograde trajectory with substantial decompression.  相似文献

Basic granulites occurring as small enclaves and pods within charnockites contain predominantly orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, hornblende, plagioclase feldspar and quartz. Chemical composition of coexisting orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, plagioclase and hornblende has been represented in ACF and AFM diagrams. The mineral assemblages and the textural relationships of the basic granulites have been described. Garnet is notably absent in the basic granulites and this is explained as due to lower (< 8 kbar) pressure and relatively magnesian bulk composition.  相似文献

Tin deposits in the form of cassiterite occur in precambrian zoned pegmatite bodies intrusive into Archean metabasic and metasedimentary rocks in Bastar, MP. The associated economic minerals include columbite-tantalite, lepidolite, beryl etc. As a major part of the area is covered by a thick overburden, termite mounds have been used as geochemical sampling medium in view of their significant potentiality in tropical areas with overburden, and also because of the low cost and ease of sampling. Though many elements have been used as pathfinders for tin, tin itself acts as the best indicator of its deposits. The present work has given encouraging results, and therefore can be applied for tin prospecting and possibly for heavy metals like Nb, Ta, W, etc., in this and other areas where termite mounds have a good spatial distribution.  相似文献

Recent observations of failure and damage of buildings and structures under seismic action has led to an increasing interest for an in-depth analysis of the vertical component of site ground motion. In particular, when dealing with saturated soils, the current engineering practice does not usually go beyond the simplified u p formulation of the Biot's equations describing the coupled hydro-mechanical behaviour, thus neglecting some terms of fluid inertial forces, despite the presence of more refined formulations, for example, the u U formulation. Therefore, a theoretical and numerical validation of the u p formulation as compared with the u U formulation is proposed in this work, where the numerical simulations are compared with the analytical solution for the u p formulation, which is also derived and illustrated in this text. The comparison between the two formulations and the analytical solution is provided for different levels of permeability and dynamic actions, which are representative of a wide scenario of site ground properties and seismic hazard in the vertical direction. In particular, the soil response is analysed in terms of acceleration and pore pressure time history, frequency content, acceleration response spectrum, and amplification ratio of acceleration. This study extends the discussion of the limits of applicability of the u p formulation with respect to the rigorous solution of Biot's equations (obtained here with u U formulation) to the context of a complex dynamic regime provided by the vertical components of real earthquake records, and paves the way for further investigations.  相似文献
