Based on two-dimensional gravity modeling, the density section of the lithosphere beneath Taiwan and the surrounding areas is constructed. According to the density parameters, the lithosphere of this region comprises both the continental and oceanic types. The continental lithosphere is lighter than the oceanic one and demonstrates insignificant density differentiation through the entire section. The oceanic lithosphere is more contrasting with respect of both the crust and mantle density. The complicated Taiwan density structure corresponding to Taiwan Island is defined to be superimposed on the transition zone between the continental and oceanic lithospheric blocks. This structure with contrasting density boundaries is characterized by the elevated and high density values of its constituting heterogeneities. The formation of the Taiwan density structure is related to geodynamic processes in the Taiwan area marking the collision zone between the Eurasian and Philippine Sea plates. 相似文献

Applicability of the physically based models of runoff generation has been shown for the long-term ensemble forecasts of snowmelt runoff volumes and peak discharges. For the deterministic forecast, the ensembles of runoff hydrographs have been modeled by different combinations of measured and calculated indices of the basin conditions on the date of the forecast issue and by the mean weather for the lead time of the forecast. For the probabilistic forecast, the ensembles of runoff hydrographs have been modeled either by the ensembles of weather, which were observed for the lead-time periods of different years, or by the ensembles of weather generated by the Monte Carlo method with the help of a stochastic weather generator. The criteria have been suggested to compare the effectiveness of the probabilistic forecasts of snowmelt runoff characteristics and peak discharges and the different forecasting approaches have been compared. Results of study of conditions for freezing precipitation (FP) at the airport of Nizhni Novgorod based on 20-year series of surface observations are described. The cloud tops are estimated from radiosonde data. It is found that the monthly mean FP frequency does not exceed 0.44%; the phenomenon occurs from October to February. Over 20 years, a total of 113 FP episodes were observed, or less than six episodes annually. Freezing precipitation is more frequent at night and in the morning and very rare in the afternoon, at surface air temperatures not exceeding 0°C and not below ?10°C; in half of the cases, the air temperature is within ?0.1 to ?2.0°C. Surface wind is most frequently from south or southwest, while in the lower 4-km layer, according to the radiosonde data, wind direction mostly veers with height from south to west and north. In the boundary layer, FP is often associated with low-level jet streams, most frequently of southwest direction in the cloudy layers. The warm layers within and below the clouds occur in more than 20% of the cases. The most typical precipitation is FP from “all cold” clouds. Using objective criteria of the fronts, synoptic situations, advection, and baroclinicity, it is shown that almost all cases of freezing rain are observed in frontal zones, while freezing drizzle is as frequent at the fronts as under airmass conditions. Both types of FP are associated mainly with high baroclinicity and warm advection. The results can be used to develop an objective method of FP forecasting. 相似文献

Deglaciation of the James Bay region was highly dynamic, with the occurrence of ice (Cochrane) readvances into glacial Lake Ojibway around final deglaciation time, which culminated with the drainage of Ojibway waters into Hudson Bay and subsequent incursion of the Tyrrell Sea at ~8 ka. Renewed interest on these events comes from the possible link between the drainage of the ice-dammed Lake Agassiz-Ojibway and a major climate deterioration known as the 8.2-ka cooling event. Recent glaciological modeling suggests that this drainage may have occurred subglacially, a mechanism that can accommodate more than one lake discharge, as suggested by marine records. The exact number and timing of drainage events, as well as location of the lake discharge pathway(s) remain, however, largely unconstrained. Here we focus on the events that led to the drainage of Lake Ojibway by documenting late-glacial sedimentary sequences located east of James Bay. Our investigations indicate that the deglacial sequence consists of a readvance till, extensive Ojibway rhythmites, and thick marine sediments. The glaciolacustrine and marine units are separated by a 60 cm-thick horizon composed of laminated silt beds containing rounded clay balls and disseminated clasts resulting from the abrupt drainage of the lake. Radiocarbon dating of marine fossils lying above the drainage horizon indicates that the glaciolacustrine episode ended around 8128–8282 cal yr BP. Micropaleontological analyses reveal that freshwater ostracods (Candona sp.) and marine microfossils (foraminifers, dinocysts) occur together in the upper part of the Ojibway sediments. Analysis of oxygen isotopes (δ18O) of ostracods and foraminifers originating from the same stratigraphic position show highly contrasting values that suggest possible subglacial exchanges between Lake Ojibway and Tyrrell Sea waters prior to the final drainage event. The complexity of the deglacial events is further indicated by radiocarbon dating of marine shells retrieved from a Cochrane till that suggests that the last ice readvance occurred almost simultaneously with the final lake discharge. These results bring additional constraints on the drainage mechanism of the coalesced Lake Agassiz-Ojibway and indicate that the James Bay region formed an important drainage pathway for meltwaters at the end of the last deglaciation. 相似文献

We suggest the concept of the Earth’s lithosphere as a geocosmic system of mobile lithospheric plates affected by both external astronomical influences (solar radiation, tides) and planetary factors—the Earth’s atmosphere, hydrosphere, and mantle convection. The annual period in seismicity is shown to have a clear cosmic origin related to the seasonal periodicity of solar radiation in the northern and southern hemispheres. The atmosphere can act as a transmitter of the annual periodicity to the lithospheric plates. The formulated concept of the lithosphere has led us to put forward testable hypotheses about the dynamical atmospherelithosphere relationship. These hypotheses form the basis for the next program of research on the Earth’s lithosphere as a geocosmic system. 相似文献
