The formation of bends (meanders) can be described by a simple physical model, according to which, water flow in a gentle valley with gentle slopes, once deflected by a random obstacle, starts oscillating from one slope to another, while keeping moving down the valley. The sinuosity of the river (the ratio of the path along its channel to the direct path along the valley) depends on the ratio of the steepness of the slopes and the valley; the mean sinuosity is close to 1.5 in accordance with the available geographic data.  相似文献

The Nabar pluton with the age of Oligo-Miocene located northwest of Isfahan, the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic belt, is composed of gabbro, gabbro diorite, diorite, quartz diorite, tonalite, and quartz monzonite. These rocks contain plagioclase, quartz, alkali-feldspar, magnesiohornblende, actinolite, tremolite-hornblende, actinolite-hornblende, anthophyllite, biotite, and Na-poor pyroxene. Application of the Al-in-hornblende barometry indicates pressures of 2–2.15 kbar, whereas the clinopyroxene barometry shows a pressure of 5 kbar. The temperature (i.e., 750–800°C) is estimated using the amphibole-clinopyroxene thermometry in a dioritic sample. Magmatic water content was greater than 10% at the time of formation of dioritic rocks in the Nabar pluton. Based on chemistry of mafic minerals and geochemical data, the Nabar plutonic complex comprises medium-K, calc-alkaline, and I-type granitoid. The rocks are characterized by enrichment of lithophile elements (LILEs) and depletion of high-field-strength elements (HFSEs). The Nabar rocks have weak concave-upward rare earth element (REE) patterns, suggesting that amphibole played a significant role in their generation during magma segregation. Low (Al2O3/(FeO + MgO + TiO2) and (Na2O + K2O)/(FeO + MgO + TiO2) ratios, and the patterns of trace and rare earth elements suggest that these rocks formed along a destructive plate margin and were derived from a lower crustal source. The magma probably formed by partial melting of lower crustal protoliths (amphibolites). Lower crust contamination with magma derived from partial melting of the upper mantle has an important role in the formation of this intrusive body, and a fractional crystallization of melts in higher crustal levels generated this spectrum of rock types. Mantle-derived gabbroic magmas emplaced into the lower crust are the most likely heat sources for partial melting.  相似文献

Native ytterbium first identified in a single brownish orange glass fragment collected from the deepest part (184–189 cm) of the bore core delivered from the Mare Crisium of the Moon to the Earth by the Luna-24 Automatic Station is described. As follows from X-ray elemental maps, the ytterbium grain is metallic. Possible mechanisms of its formation and reasons for its elevated corrosion stability are discussed.  相似文献

Solubility curves of water-hydrogen fluid were studied using a high-pressure gas apparatus at a pressure of 200 MPa under variable fluid composition in haplogranite (Ab 39 Or 32 Qtz 29, 950°C), Na-disilicate (Na2Si2O5, 950°C), and albite melts (1200°C). The mole fraction of hydrogen in experiments was controlled directly by Ar-H2 mixtures using a specially designed cell with a Shaw membrane. $ X_{H_2 }^{Ar - H_2 } $ X_{H_2 }^{Ar - H_2 } ranged from 0 to 1. In some experiments with haplogranite and Na-disilicate melts under oxidizing conditions, in order to increase the accuracy of experimental parameters, the fugacities of oxygen and hydrogen were controlled using the double-capsule technique and the solid-phase buffer mixtures Ni-NiO (NNO) and Co-CoO (CCO). The addition of H2 to the H2O-saturated systems ($ X_{H_2 }^{H_2 O - H_2 } $ X_{H_2 }^{H_2 O - H_2 } ≥ 0.012) results in the appearance of a distinct maximum on the solubility curves at $ X_{H_2 }^{H_2 O - H_2 } $ X_{H_2 }^{H_2 O - H_2 } = 0.05–0.07 (H2 mole fractions were calculated for real H2O-H2 mixtures of real gases), and the maximum content of H2O-H2 fluid increases relative to the H2O-saturated melts by 1.51 wt % for haplogranite melt at $ X_{H_2 } $ X_{H_2 } = 0.063, 2.68 wt % for albite melt at $ X_{H_2 } $ X_{H_2 } = 0.066, and 3.54 wt % for Na-disilicate melt at $ X_{H_2 } $ X_{H_2 } = 0.067. A further increase in H2 content in the gas mixture decreases the solubility of H2O-H2 fluid in the melts, and under pure H2 pressure, the contents of fluid components are 0.08 wt % in haplogranite melt and 0.06 wt % in albite melt. The 1H NMR study of aluminosilicate and Na-silicate glasses obtained under the pressure of H2O and H2O-H2 fluids suggests different mechanisms of the dissolution of H2O and H2O-H2 fluids in magmatic melts. In addition to the spectra of dissolved water fluid, the spectra of quenched glasses synthesized under H2O-H2 fluid pressure exhibited a narrow line of molecular hydrogen with a width at half height of 1.8–2.0 kHz at $ X_{H_2 } $ X_{H_2 } ≥ 0.653 for albite and $ X_{H_2 } $ X_{H_2 } ≥ 0.063 for Na-disilicate and two lines at $ X_{H_2 } $ X_{H_2 } ≥ 0.063 for the haplogranite composition.  相似文献

Isolated patches ofSpartina anglica (cordgrass) at two sites on a wave-exposed mid-intertidal flat of the 340 km2 Manukau Harbor (Auckland, New Zealand) have developed very differently since being planted in the mid-1970s. Although the two sites are only 0.5 km apart and at the same intertidal elevation,Spartina patches at the easternmost site (site 1) have as much as an order of magnitude higher biomass and accumulated sediment volume thanSpartina patches at site 2. A field experiment was conducted to characterize waves and associated sediment dynamics at each site, which might explain whySpartina patches at the two sites have developed so differently over the past 25 yr or so. Suspended sediments were measured and wave characteristics were inferred from subsurface pressure data measured for 5 wk at bothSpartina sites and at an intermediate location. Bed-orbital speeds and frictional wave-energy dissipation were consistently lower at the easternmost site with the largerSpartina patches. The west-to-east reduction in wave energy is due to the spatial arrangement of theSpartina sites relative to the predominant wind fetches. The wave-energy gradient is maintained by tidal-cycle variations in fetch and bed friction and results in a west-to-east reduction in sand suspension. Silt, which is largely resuspended under southwest winds, is redeposited in the low wave-energy conditions in and around the larger site 1Spartina patches. Shell accumulation bySpartina patches at site 1 occurs infrequently, during southwest winds >10 m s−1 and water depths >0.7 m, when waves are least attenuated by bed friction. Large between-site differences in the growth of and sediment accumulation by theSpartina patch are consistent with the observed wave-energy gradient. The resulting spatial patterns of silt, sand, and shell resuspension and deposition directly influence the rate of sediment accumulation bySpartina patches and the composition of accumulated sediment on this wave-exposed intertidal flat.  相似文献

We assessed fish assemblage stability over the last half century in Lake Pontchartrain, an environmentally degraded oligohaline estuary in southeastern Louisiana. Because assemblage instability over time has been consistently associated with severe habitat degradation, we attempted to determine whether fish assemblages in demersal, nearshore, and pelagic habitats exhibited change that was unrelated to natural fluctuations in environmental variables (e.g., assemblage changes between wet and dry periods). Collection data from three gear types (trawl, beach seine, and gill nets) and monthly environmental data (salinity, temperature, and Secchi depth) were compared for four collecting periods: 1954 (dry period), 1978 (wet period), 1996–1998 (wet period), and 1998–2000 (dry period). Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) revealed that although the three environmental variables were significantly associated with the distribution and abundance patterns of fish assemblages in all habitats (with the exception of Secchi depth for pelagic samples), most fish assemblage change occurred among sampling periods (i.e., along a temporal gradient unrelated to changing environmental variables). Assemblage instability was the most pronounced for fishes collected by trawls from demersal habitats. A marked lack of cyclicity in the trawl data CCA diagram indicated a shift away from a baseline demersal assemblage of 50 yr ago. Centroid positions for the five most collected species indicated that three benthic fishes, Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus), spot (Leiostomus xanthurus), and hardhead catfish (Arius felis), were more dominant in past demersal assemblages (1954 and 1978). A different situation was shown for planktivorous species collected by trawls with bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli) becoming more dominant in recent assemblage and Gulf menhaden (Brevoortia patromus) remaining equally represented in assemblages over time. Changes in fish assemblages from nearshore (beach seine) and pelagic (gill net) habitats were more closely related to environmental fluctuations, though the CCA for beach seine data also indicated a decrease in the dominance ofM. undulatus and an increase in the proportion ofA. mitchilli over time. The reduced assemblage role of benthic fishes and the marked assemblage change indicated by trawl data suggest that over the last half century demersal habitats in Lake Pontchartrain have been impacted more by multiple anthropogenic stressors than nearshore or pelagic habitats.  相似文献

The behavior of chalcophile metals in volcanic environments is important for a variety of economic and environmental applications, and for understanding large-scale processes such as crustal recycling into the mantle. In order to better define the behavior of chalcophile metals in ocean island volcanoes, we measured the concentrations of Re, Cd, Bi, Cu, Pb, Zn, Pt, S, and a suite of major elements and lithophile trace elements in moderately evolved (6-7% MgO) tholeiitic glasses from Ko’olau and Moloka’i volcanoes. Correlated variations in the Re, Cd, and S contents of these glasses are consistent with loss of these elements as volatile species during magmatic outgassing. Bismuth also shows a good correlation with S in the Ko’olau glasses, but undegassed glasses from Moloka’i have unexpectedly low Bi contents. Rhenium appears to have been more volatile than either Cd or Bi in these magmas.Undegassed glasses with 880-1400 ppm S have 1.2-1.5 ppb Re and 130-145 ppb Cd. In contrast, outgassed melts with low S (<200 ppm) are depleted in these elements by factors of 2-5. Key ratios such as Re/Yb and Cu/Re are fractionated significantly from mantle values. Copper, Pb, and Pt contents of these glasses show no correlation with S, ruling out segregation of an immiscible magmatic sulfide phase as the cause of these variations. Undegassed Hawaiian tholeiites have Re/Yb ratios significantly higher than those of MORB, and extend to values greater than that of the primitive mantle. Loss of Re during outgassing of ocean island volcanoes, may help resolve the apparent paradox of low Re/Os ratios in ocean island basalts with radiogenic Os isotopic compositions. Plume source regions with Re/Yb ratios greater than that of the primitive mantle may provide at least a partial solution to the “missing Re” problem in which one or more reservoirs with high Re/Yb are required to balance the low Re/Yb of MORB.Lithophile trace element compositions of most Ko’olau and Moloka’i tholeiites are consistent with variable degrees of melting of fertile mantle peridotite. However, light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched glasses have trace element compositions more consistent with a garnet-rich source having a distinctive trace element composition. This provides additional evidence for a unique source component possibly related to recycled oceanic crust contributing to Ko’olau tholeiites.  相似文献

The Bracco–Gabbro Complex (Internal Liguride ophiolite), that intruded subcontinental mantle peridotite, contains layers of chromitite that are associated with ultramafic differentiates. The chromitites and disseminated chromites in the ultramafics have Al contents similar to the Al-rich podiform chromitites [0.40 < Cr# = Cr/(Cr + Al) < 0.55]. TiO2 contents of the chromitites are unusually high and range up to 0.82 wt%. The calculated Al2O3 and TiO2 content of the parental melt suggest that the melt was a MORB type. Geothermobarometrical calculations on few preserved silicate inclusions revealed formation temperatures between 970 and 820 °C under a relatively high oxygen fugacity (ΔlogfO2 at +2.0–2.4). Chromitites were altered during the post-magmatic tectono-metamorphic uplift and the final exposure at the seafloor, as evidenced by the formation of ferrian chromite. The PGE contents of the chromitites and associated ultramafics are unusually low (PGEmax 83 ppb). The chondrite-normalized PGE spidergrams show positive PGE patterns and to some extent similarities with the typical trend of stratiform chromitites. No specific PGM have been found but low concentrations of PPGE (Rh, Pt, and Pd) have been detected in the sulphides that occur interstitially to or enclosed in chromite. Recently, it has been shown that the Internal Liguride gabbroic intrusions have formed by relatively low degrees of partial melting of the asthenospheric mantle. We conclude that the low degree of partial melting might be the main factor to control the unusual low PGE contents and the rather unique PGE distribution in the Bracco chromitites.  相似文献
