A method is described for analyzing nanogram quantities of chlorinated hydrocarbons from 1-1 samples of seawater. Seawater samples are pumped through a copper column containing a mixture by weight of 5% activated carbon powder, 10% MgO and 85% refined diatomaceous earth. The chlorinated hydrocarbons in the seawater are adsorbed or trapped on the column and subsequently eluted with 30% benzene in acetone (v/v) for analysis by gas-liquid chromatography.This procedure was used to analyze chlorinated hydrocarbon levels in samples collected off the southern California coast. We suggest that anthropogenic chlorinated hydrocarbons can be used for the investigation of large-scale ocean currents and mixing processes.  相似文献

A marine magnetic survey was conducted over the Dellwood Knolls area of the northeast Pacific in September 1977 using a proton precession magnetometer and Loran-C positioning. Geomagnetic field reference stations were located at Victoria and Port Hardy. In addition, a recently developed ocean bottom magnetometer was deployed in the survey area. The cross-over error, a measure of survey accuracy, and the factors contributing to it are discussed. In high magnetic gradient regions, the part of the error related to the uncertainty in ship position implies that the repeatability of the Loran-C navigation system is of the order of 30 metres. Part of the error is also due to time variations of the geomagnetic field. This latter effect can be significantly reduced by correcting to a well located reference station. Because of the areal distribution of the geomagnetic coast effect, a land station close to the survey area may not be as effective as a more distant site. Referencing to an ocean bottom magnetometer, at least to moderate levels of disturbance, is comparable to correcting to a well located land station. Using a combination of land and ocean bottom reference data produced a reduction in the cross-over error from 25 to 11 nT for this survey, effectively removing the geomagnetic variation term. Three methods for the determination of dissolved organic carbon in seawater were compared. Samples were analysed using persulphate oxidation, high-temperature combustion, and ultraviolet photo-oxidation. The dissolved organic carbon content of the seawater samples ranged from 0.6 to 1.6 mg C/I. This study shows that results of high-temperature oxidation and photo-oxidation procedures differ by less than 5%, whereas results with persulphate oxidation are about 15% less than those obtained with the high-temperature oxidation. The relative merits of each of the oxidation techniques for the determination of organic matter in seawater are discussed.  相似文献

A bathymetric and magnetic survey of the California Seamount region (17°40′N × 124°00′W) shows that existing charts are in error. California Seamount is a peak extending to within 454 m (248 fathoms) of the surface. Its true location is 17°41′N × 124°01′W, 25 km southwest of the charted position. Near the old charted position there is an elongated feature which extends to within 1818 m (994 fathoms) of the surface. Both features are located on the Clarion Fracture Zone.  相似文献

The measurement of enzymic activity in plankton communities is useful in the study of marine ecosystems. Such measurements can lead to a clearer understanding of the biological transformations in plankton communities at a particular time. However, the assays are somewhat time-consuming. To facilitate analysis of large numbers of samples, we have developed a method of quick-freezing of whole cells and of cell-free extracts of the diatom, Skeletonema costatum, followed by storage at ?60°C for up to one week. No loss in either the electron transport system (ETS) or the glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activity occurs. Similar conditions of storage can be used for the preservation of ETS activity in the marine copepod Calanus pacificus. Also, no measurable loss in either the GDH or the ETS activity is detectable after the quick-frozen whole cells of S. costatum have been kept frozen for over a year.  相似文献

Generation, migration and accumulation of petroleum in a sedimentary basin is a function of geologic, hydrodynamic and thermodynamic development of the basin and the type and amount of organic matter. Temperature history not only determines rate of hydrocarbon generation, but also affects paleohydrodynamics and physical and thermal properties vs depth relationships. Therefore, paleotemperature is the most important parameter. Paleohydrodynamics together with geologic history of the basin is important in shaping secondary migration patterns and accumulation of hydrocarbons.Quantification of all the above processes is complicated. Steps in constructing a deterministic dynamic model for calculation of petroleum potential during a sedimentary basin development are stated and analyzed in this paper. The effect of paleotemperature variations on petroleum generation and on physical properties of sedimentary sequences are illustrated by numerical examples. Computer models will enable exploration geologists to make quantitative exploration predictions in sedimentary basins.  相似文献

As a result of careful interpretation of the data of recent seismo-acoustic surveys, two major seismic complexes were identified in the structure of the upper sedimentary section of the north-western slope of Kukuy Griva (ridge). They are composed of several inner seismo-facies, which are very characteristic and separated with well-expressed regional reflector. Seismic and acoustic data revealed evidences of numerous landslide processes which were different in age and peculiarities of manifestation. For the first time, detailed schemes of seismo-facies distribution are compiled for major seismic complexes at the area. The boundary between seismic complexes is dated as 150 thousands years. It is shown that sliding was more intensive during Late Pleistocene and Holocene, reflecting activation of tectonic movements in this part of Baikal rift system.  相似文献
