 Phase transitions in MgAl2O4 spinel have been studied at pressures 22–38 GPa, and at temperatures up to 1600 °C, using a combination of synchrotron radiation and a multianvil apparatus with sintered diamond anvils. Spinel dissociated into a mixture of MgO plus Al2O3 at pressures to 25 GPa, while it transformed to the CaFe2O4 (calcium ferrite) structure at higher pressures via the metastably formed oxide mixture upon increasing temperature. Neither the e-phase nor the CaTi2O4-type MgAl2O4, which were reported in earlier studies using the diamond-anvil cell, were observed in the present pressure and temperature range. The zero-pressure bulk modulus of the calcium-ferrite-type MgAl2O4 was calculated as K=213 (3) GPa, which is significantly lower than that reported by Yutani et al. (1997), but is consistent with a more recent result by Funamori et al. (1998) and that estimated by an ab initio calculation by Catti (2001).  One well-defined OH Raman band at 3651 ± 1 cm−1 and one weak feature near 3700 ± 5 cm−1 are recognized for the hydrous γ-phase of Mg2SiO4. Like the hydrous β-phase, the H2O content in the γ-phase shifts most of the corresponding silicate modes towards lower frequencies. Variations in Raman spectra of the hydrous γ-phase were investigated up to about 200 kbar at room temperature and in the range 81–873 K at atmospheric pressure. Unlike the anhydrous γ-phase, which remains intact up to at least 873 K, the hydrous γ-phase sometimes converts to a defective forsterite structure above 800 K. Although the hydrous γ-phase remains intact up to at least 800 K, Raman signals of the OH bands disappear completely above 423 K. The Raman frequency of the well-defined OH band decreases linearly with increasing temperature between 81 and 423 K. In the region of the silicate vibrations, the Raman frequencies of the two most intense bands increase nonlinearly with increasing pressure, and decrease with increasing temperature. The frequencies for all other weak bands, however, decreased linearly with increasing temperature. The latter most likely reflects the larger scatter of the data for the weak bands. The mineralogy and geochemical characteristics of intermediate composition ferrolatites and related lavas from the Magic Reservoir eruptive center (central Snake River Plain) have been investigated to evaluate the origin and petrologic significance of these hybrid lavas. The ferrolatites are chemically uniform, but contain a disequilibrium phenocryst/xenocryst assemblage derived in part from mixed rhyolitic and basaltic magmas that are closely represented by extrusive units in the area. The hybrid lavas also contain xenoliths of Archean granulites and have high 87Sr/ 86Sr and low 143Nd/144Nd ratios, all of which suggest significant magma-crust interaction. Quantitative models including magma mixing, minor crystal fractionation, and crustal contamination very closely reproduce the observed compositions of these ferrolatites; closed system fractionation and (or) simple bulk contamination models are not as successful and can be ruled out. It appears that preexisting mafic and silicic magmas from distinct sources (e.g., mantle and crust) encounter one another in crustal-level magma chambers under conditions where intimate mixing may occur despite wide differences in the physical properties of these liquids.  相似文献

Abstract Meso- and microscale structural analyses were carried out in the Hatagawa shear zone, north-eastern Japan. The shear zone is a sinistral strike–slip ductile shear zone, and has a 1-km wide north-south trending region where quartz mean grain size of approximately 35 μm does not vary significantly. Two types of quartz microstructures, A and B, occur in the western and eastern part of the shear zone, respectively. The lattice preferred orientation (LPO) patterns are characterized by a type I crossed girdle in the samples with the quartz microstructure A, and a Y maximum in the samples with the quartz microstructure B. The microstructures under optical and transmission electron microscopes indicates that the quartz recrystallization occurred predominantly by progressive subgrain rotation in microstructure A, and by both progressive subgrain rotation and grain boundary migration in microstructure B. This suggests different deformation conditions in the western and eastern parts of the shear zone. Quartz LPO patterns, presence of myrmekite, feldspar compositions, and dislocation density also suggest difference in the deformation conditions. The syn-deformation temperature in the western part of the shear zone was lower than that of the eastern part of the shear zone. The stress in the western part of the shear zone was higher than that of the eastern part of the shear zone. The difference in the deformation conditions would affect not only the quartz microstructure, but also the quartz LPO patterns and the presence of myrmekite around K-feldspar porphyroclasts.  相似文献

Recent chemical accidents precipitated by natural disasters have prompted governments in the United States, Japan, and Europe, among other countries, to re-evaluate current practices in the design and risk management of industrial facilities. This paper presents an overview of natural hazard design considerations and external events risk management requirements in the industrial sector, with particular emphasis on industrial practices in the United States, Japan, and Europe. The analysis shows that although regulations exist to ensure industrial plant structures are built to resist natural hazards (up to the design level), there are few laws to address the performance of non-structural elements and safety and emergency response measures during a natural disaster. Laws usually also refer to natural hazards only indirectly, and provisions to prevent or respond to simultaneous disasters from single or multiple sources concurrent with the natural disaster are usually not present.

The relationship between building damage patterns and human casualties in Nishinomiya City – one of the most heavily damaged cities in the 1995 Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Disaster – was investigated using photographs of damaged buildings. First, the photographs of buildings in which casualties occurred were identified, and the building damage patterns were judged based on the photographs considering the existence of survival space. Then the relationship between the building damage pattern and casualty occurrence, and the characteristics of casualty distribution, were investigated. The main findings were as follows: Most casualties occurred in relatively old two-story wooden buildings in which the ground floor completely collapsed without survival space; casualties occurred at all building damage levels including ``no damage', and it can be seen that building damage is the major, but not the sole cause, of casualties in an earthquake; in Nishinomiya City, the regional distributions of casualties due to the collapse of buildings that left no survival space is similar to that of casualties due to other types of building damage.  相似文献

We observed the partial pressure of oceanic CO2, pCO2 sea, and related surface properties in the westernmost region of the subarctic North Pacific, seasonally from 1998 to 2001. The pCO2 sea in the Oyashio region showed a large decrease from winter to spring. In winter, pCO2 sea was higher than 400 μatm in the Oyashio region and this region was a source of atmospheric CO2. In spring, pCO2 sea decreased to extremely low values, less than 200 μatm (minimum, 139 μatm in 2001), around the Oyashio region with low surface salinity and this region turned out to be a strong sink. The spatial variations of pCO2 sea were especially large in spring in this region. The typical Oyashio water with minimal mixing with subtropical warm water was extracted based on the criterion of potential alkalinity. The contribution of main oceanic processes to the changes in pCO2 sea from winter to spring was estimated from the changes in the concentrations of dissolved inorganic carbon and nutrients, total alkalinity, temperature and salinity observed in surface waters in respective years. These quantifications indicated that photosynthesis made the largest contribution to the observed pCO2 sea decreases in all years and its magnitude was variable year by year. These year-to-year differences in spring biological contribution could be linked to those in the development of the density stratification due to the decrease in surface salinity. Thus, the changes in the surface physical structure could induce those in pCO2 sea in the Oyashio region in spring. Furthermore, it is suggested that the direction and magnitude of the air-sea CO2 flux during this season could be controlled significantly by the onset time of the spring bloom. The presence and nature of high molecular weight organic matter in seawater was critically reviewed and its biogeochemical cycle was discussed.Organic matter that passes through a filter of 0.5–1 μm pore size is called dissolved and that which does not pass through such a filter is defined as particulate. The size of colloidal particles ranges from 0.001 to 1 μm, and therefore, they are included in the dissolved fraction having high molecular weight.High molecular weight organic matter greater than 100,000 molecular weight was found in the seawater of Tokyo Bay. The values ranged from 0.1 to 1.5 mgC/l, and accounted for 8–45% of the total dissolved organic matter.Decomposition experiments on dissolved organic matter showed that macromolecular organic matter is refractory to bacterial attack. However, macromolecular organic materials tend to aggregate or adsorb on small particles to a sufficient size for precipitation. Organic aggregates thus formed sink to the bottom of the sea and bioelements included in them are removed from water column. High molecular weight organic materials are, therefore, considered to play an important role in transportation and distribution of matter in seawater.In order to elucidate the chemical and biological properties of macromolecular organic matter, concentration and isolation of this material are important, using methods such as adsorption on organic adsorbents or ultrafiltration.  相似文献
