Most airborne and terrestrial laser scanning systems additionally record the received signal intensity for each measurement. Multiple studies show the potential of this intensity value for a great variety of applications (e.g. strip adjustment, forestry, glaciology), but also state problems if using the original recorded values. Three main factors, a) spherical loss, b) topographic and c) atmospheric effects, influence the backscatter of the emitted laser power, which leads to a noticeably heterogeneous representation of the received power. This paper describes two different methods for correcting the laser scanning intensity data for these known influences resulting in a value proportional to the reflectance of the scanned surface. The first approach – data-driven correction – uses predefined homogeneous areas to empirically estimate the best parameters (least-squares adjustment) for a given global correction function accounting for all range-dependent influences. The second approach – model-driven correction – corrects each intensity independently based on the physical principle of radar systems. The evaluation of both methods, based on homogeneous reflecting areas acquired at different heights in different missions, indicates a clear reduction of intensity variation, to 1/3.5 of the original variation, and offsets between flight strips to 1/10. The presented correction methods establish a great potential for laser scanning intensity to be used for surface classification and multi-temporal analyses.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a drilling method, which might prove useful both for applications on the Moon and for drilling on Mars, Venus, or other planetary surfaces. It is based on the use of a cold gas flow for pumping fine-grained debris particles out of the borehole, after they have been pulverized by the bore crown. We present a basic design and demonstrate by a hydrodynamic calculation that such a system should work effectively even on an airless body like the Moon, where the driver gas has to be provided from the associated lander or rover, which acts as the bore platform.  相似文献

Strontium isotopic measurements were made on Late Proterozoic carbonates from West African Craton. Comparison of samples with acceptable trace element patterns with coeval data from southern Africa and with the published Australian results suggests that the 87Sr86Sr ratio of the Late Proterozoic sea water evolved in the following manner about 0.7075 at 1000 ± 50 Ma, 0.7056 to 0.7074 at 900 ± 50 Ma, 0.7068 to 0.7091(0.7106) at 800 ± 50 Ma, 0.7074 to 0.7077 at 700 ± 50 Ma, and 0.7076 to 0.7089(0.7096) at 600 ± 50 Ma ago. The variations are comparable in magnitude and frequency to those described previously for the Phanerozoic. Strontium isotopic values in the radiogenic part of this range suggest that the continental river flux of Sr into Late Proterozoic oceans was of comparable isotopic composition to its present day counterpart (~0.711). Consequently, the non-radiogenic 87Sr86Sr value at ~900 ± 50 Ma ago signifies a large flux of “mantle” strontium into the ocean at this time. Because the present time resolution is only about 75 ± 25Ma, additional sampling as well as better stratigraphie resolution and more definite selection criteria are required for construction of a more detailed Late Proterozoic sea water curve.  相似文献

Dramatic changes in European vegetation occurred during the transition from the Eemian interglacial to Weichselian glacial climates, correlative with major changes in global ice core and marine records. Quantitative knowledge of climate change is important for understanding of the climate system and for climate modelling, for which reconstructions of this transitional period are of special interest. However, it has been difficult to quantify the climatic changes involved in the Eemian to Early Weichselian transition from terrestrial archives due to the lack of modern vegetation analogues. To circumvent this problem, we applied a suitable multivariate probabilistic approach to pollen and plant macrofossil assemblages to reconstruct temperature and precipitation for this transition in central Europe. Our reconstructions span the interval from the beginning of the Eemian (Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e) to the Odderade interstadial (MIS 5a). They indicate a relatively stable Eemian, with increasing precipitation reducing the continentality of the climate with time. During the transition from the Eemian to the Herning stadial, mean July and January temperatures decreased by 4 °C and by as much as 20 °C, respectively. Temperatures remained high enough to support forests during the stadials, and we infer that the reconstructed decrease of precipitation below 500 mm per year caused the extirpation of forests during these periods. Thus, we conclude that precipitation, although difficult to reconstruct, is of vital importance for explaining vegetation change during the Eemian and Eemian/Early Weichselian transition.  相似文献

Space astronomy in the last 40 years has largely been done from spacecraft in low Earth orbit (LEO) for which the technology is proven and delivery mechanisms are readily available. However, new opportunities are arising with the surge in commercial aerospace missions. We describe here one such possibility: deploying a small instrument on the Moon. This can be accomplished by flying onboard the Indian entry to the Google Lunar X PRIZE competition, Team Indus mission, which is expected to deliver a nearly 30 kgs of payloads to the Moon, with a rover as its primary payload. We propose to mount a wide-field far-UV (130–180 nm) imaging telescope as a payload on the Team Indus lander. Our baseline operation is a fixed zenith pointing but with the option of a mechanism to allow observations of different attitudes. Pointing towards intermediate ecliptic latitude (50° or above) ensures that the Sun is at least 40° off the line of sight at all times. In this position, the telescope can cover higher galactic latitudes as well as parts of Galactic plane. The scientific objectives of such a prospective are delineated and discussed.  相似文献

We review the current knowledge about the two biggest magnetospheres in our solar system based on the significant progress made with data from the Cassini spacecraft in orbit around Saturn since 2004, and based on the last mission to Jupiter by the Galileo spacecraft between 1995 and 2003. The Cenozoic strata of the Xining Basin, NE Tibet, have provided crucial records for understanding the tectonic and palaeo-environmental evolution of the region. Yet, the age of the lower part of the sedimentary stratigraphy and, consequently, the early tectonic evolution of the basin remain debated. Here, we present the litho- and magnetostratigraphy of various early Eocene sections throughout the Xining Basin independently constrained by the U–Pb radiometric age of a carbonate bed. Our study extends the dated stratigraphy down to 53.0 Ma (C24n.1r) and reveals highly variable accumulation rates during the early Eocene ranging from 0.5 to 8 cm/ka. This is in stark contrast to the low but stable accumulation rates (2–3 cm/ka) observed throughout the overlying Palaeogene and Neogene strata. Such a pattern of basin infill is not characteristic of flexural subsidence as previously proposed, but rather supports an extensional origin of the Xining Basin with multiple depocentres, which subsequently coalesced into a more stable and slowly subsiding basin. Whether this extension was related to the far-field effects of the subducting Pacific Plate or the India–Asia collision remains to be confirmed by future studies.  相似文献

Little is known concerning climate changes in the Eastern Baltic region during the last interglacial–glacial cycle and in particular, climate changes during the Weichselian. In this study, a quantitative reconstruction of the mean January and July temperature for the Medininkai-117 site in Lithuania is presented. The reconstruction is based on pollen and plant macrofossils from this site, which reveal that the vegetation was characteristic of many northern Europe sites during the Eemian and Early Weichselian. Gradual evolution of the vegetation suggests that relatively uniform climate conditions existed during the Eemian. Our reconstructions support the view of a relatively stable Eemian, with short cooling phases of low amplitude. A strong increase in temperature was apparent during the beginning of the interglacial and decrease during the transition to the Weichselian. Reconstructed July temperatures of the Eemian interglacial were approximately 2 °C higher than today (18.5 °C; today: 16.2 °C) and were similar to today for January (− 5.2 °C; today: − 5.1 °C). July temperatures during the Early Weichselian were only ~ 2°C lower than during the Eemian, whereas the January temperatures gradually decreased. Winter temperatures were relatively high (above − 10 °C) during the Early Weichselian.  相似文献

Hidden subvertical discontinuities oriented parallel to subparallel to the exposed faces of outcropping sandstone were effectively mapped at three different study sites in central Missouri using a ground-penetrating radar system (GPR) equipped with a 400-MHz monostatic antenna and a survey wheel. At each site, a suite of 2-D ground-penetrating radar profiles were acquired along multiple closely spaced traverses on relatively smooth exposed rock surfaces. Time-zero correction was applied to the raw GPR data which were then processed using band-pass filtering, range and display gain, color transformation, and deconvolution techniques. Pseudo 3D images of each identified discontinuity at each site were constructed based on the interpretation of the nonmigrated ground-penetrating radar profiles. These pseudo 3D images were hand-migrated and transformed into true 3D images which depict variable depths at “perpendicular horizontal distance” to each discontinuity relative to the exposed rock face. The results demonstrate that GPR can be used to detect and map hidden discontinuities. This information can then be used for rock slope stability analysis and rock engineering purposes.  相似文献
