The isolated outlier of Visean (Mid Mississippian) limestones and sandstones near Corwen, North Wales, UK, provides a critical constraint on regional tectonic and palaeogeographical models. The late Asbian to Brigantian succession comprises a series of shoaling‐upwards cycles (parasequences). These were the product of forced, glacioeustatic regressions and have boundaries that testify to emergence, karstic dissolution and soil formation on a low gradient carbonate platform prior to flooding and the resumption of marine deposition. The recognition of two of the main marker beds within the North Wales Visean succession (Main Shale and Coral Bed) together with a newly applied foraminiferal and algal biozonation allow the outlier succession to be correlated with other Visean outcrops in the region and more widely throughout the British Isles. In revealing regional thickness and facies variations, these comparisons show that the outlier succession was deposited landward of the early Asbian shoreline in a region of enhanced subsidence localized along the Bala Lineament. The Corwen Outlier suggests that, within narrow gulfs associated with the region's major tectonic lineaments, Mississippian carbonate facies extended farther south into the contemporary hinterland of older rocks and that, in response to Brigantian climate change, these topographic features likely also influenced fluvial catchments supplying siliciclastic sediment to the platform's landward margin and, subsequently, Namurian deltas. Contrary to earlier suggestions, Visean outcrop patterns, facies distributions and thicknesses in the vicinity of the Bala Lineament can be explained without the need to invoke extensive post‐depositional lateral displacements. We present Doppler images of the young K5V–K7V rapid rotator LO Peg from seven nights of continuous spectroscopy obtained in 1998 from July 04 to July 10. The images reveal the presence of a strong polar cap with appendages extending to mid-latitudes, but no star-spots are seen below 15°. We briefly discuss the distribution of spots in light of recent flux transport simulations, which are able to reproduce the observed latitude dependence. With the full time series of spectra, of which 314 are useful, many phases are observed three times over the seven nights of observations. Using star-spots as tracers of a solar-like latitudinal differential rotation in our image reconstructions, we find that the equatorial regions complete one more rotation than the polar regions every  181 ± 35 d  . LO Peg is the second coolest star for which such a measurement has been made using indirect imaging methods. The degree of latitudinal shear is less than that seen in G and early K dwarfs, suggesting a trend in which differential rotation decreases with stellar mass in (pre-)main-sequence objects.  相似文献

We present observations of eight Galactic bulge microlensing events taken with the 1.0-m Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope (JKT) on La Palma during 2000 June and July. The JKT observing schedule was optimized using a prioritizing algorithm to automatically update the target list. For most of these events we have sampled the light curves at times where no information was available from the OGLE alert team. We assume a point-source point-lens (PSPL) model and perform a maximum likelihood fit to both our data and the OGLE data to constrain the event parameters of the fit. We then refit the data assuming a binary lens and proceed to calculate the probability of detecting planets with mass ratio   q = 10−3  . We have seen no clear signatures of planetary deviations on any of the eight events and we quantify constraints on the presence of planetary companions to the lensing stars. For two well-observed events, 2000BUL31 and 2000BUL33, our detection probabilities peak at ∼30 and ∼20 per cent respectively for   q = 10−3  and   a ∼ R E  for a  Δχ2  threshold value of 60.  相似文献
