Peculiarities of the dynamics and the structure formation in the estuary run-off lenses have been analysed based on field data obtained at the Guinean coast (the central eastern Atlantic Ocean). Attention was paid to the processes of restratification, internal mixing, and exchange in the areas of the frontal zone of the run-off lens and the tidal frontal zone. The stabilization of the front of the estuary run-off lens by means of the periodic washing out of its forepart by tidal upwelling is described. The mechanisms of the energy transformation in the leading part of the lens have been revealed. Effects of run-off and loczalization of transformed waters in the small-scale frontal zones are found. A hybrid thermal protection method using waste heat from a surface-mounted outboard motor is shown to create a warm “micro-climate” environment for divers. The effects of surface heater capacities, water flow rates, shelter volume and shelter insulation on micro-climate temperatures are characterized. During long, cold-water decompression stops this method offers a reliable, low-cost alternative to surface-supplied hot water suits or diver-carried heating systems. An added bonus for divers using closed-circuit breathing apparatus is prolonged durations of their carbon dioxide scrubbers when surrounded by the warm water “micro-climate”. The paper discusses the data derived from a numerical experiment on the ocean’s response (between the equator and 64°N) to
the seasonal variability of the atmospheric forcing (wind and heat flux through the ocean surface). A multilayer (7 layers)
non-linear model is used incorporating the upper mixed layer interacting with the internal layers in the regimes of entraining
and subduction. The restructuring of the layer composition, the currents and temperature variability, as well as the alternation
of the entrainment and subduction regimes are analysed.

Between 2 and 6 February, 1995, a 25 km2 area at the Dry Tortugas (Florida Keys) was surveyed with a 100 kHz side-scan sonar system and 3.5-kHz subbottom profiler.
The side-scan system revealed a pattern of alternating high and low backscatter. The subbottom profiler showed areas with
no acoustic penetration between sediment troughs. The combination of both methods allowed delineation of the boundaries in

The paper analyses results of the numerical simulation of upwelling events in the north-western part of the Black Sea, mostly
near the South Crimea. The calculations were performed using a numerical model based on primitive hydrodynamics equations.
Emphasis is laid on the case when a salinity front simulating the Black Sea rim current is prescribed in the initial conditions.
The interaction of the Black Sea rim current's stream with the coastline and bottom topography leads to the development of
an upwelling near the Crimea's coast, even in the absence of wind forcing. The paper discusses the structure of the three-dimensional
circulation of waters in the shelf area of the NW Black Sea. Numerical modelling results are matched up with the satellite
data obtained by the HRPT receiving station.

The paper considers the application of self-organizing models, specifically, the method of grouped arguments consideration
(MGAC), to forecast short and non-stationary time series of observations in the ocean. A sequence of operations for the treatment
of observational series is suggested. To assess its efficiency, we have used mean monthly oxygen concentration data collected
in the surface and near-bottom layers of the Taganrog Bay. It is shown that the application of the MGAC model allows one to
reduce by two times the root-mean-square error of that of the series prediction by five points, in comparison with the Jenkins-Box
regressional model. It has been concluded that the predictors' non-linear functions may be effectively used in the treatment
of short samplings.

Community-based coastal resource management projects facilitated by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the Philippines have explored approaches to decrease poverty-driven over-exploitation of coastal resources. There has been little reporting and analysis of such activities until recently. Nine case studies have recently been published and this paper presents a brief summary of these, along with an analysis of the trends and themes identified. Though diverse and covering the Philippines from Mindanao to Luzon, the case studies highlight the value of community commitment and participation in decisions regarding, and in the implementation of, resource management in ways that consider not only the bio-physical aspects of resource management but the social, economic and legal implications. Experience in working with local government has been both successful and limited. Successful projects raise hopes for further progress through education and organization of communities to improve livelihoods and protect coastal resources. 相似文献

Data collected from 20 years of observations by the P. P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (about 250 comprehensive ecosystem stations) are summarized to evaluate the primary production and biomass of the principal groups of plankton in the Pacific Ocean. The stations were classified into geographical regions according to satellite determined criteria. The areas of these regions were evaluated according to CZCS data from 1978 to 1986. The total value of primary production was evaluated as 26·9 Gt C year−1. Taking the “bottle effect” correction into account, this value may be as high as 45.6 Gt C year−1. Total biomass values of phytoplankton (134 Mt C), bacteria (86 Mt C), protozoa (26 Mt C) and mesoplankton (184 Mt C) were also calculated. Seasonal variabilities of all these values were remarkably insignificant. 相似文献
