A prominent feature of a granulite-facies shear zone from the Hidaka Main Zone (Japan) is the folding of orthopyroxene (opx)
porphyroclasts. Dislocation density estimated by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and chemical etching in homogeneously
folded domains is too low to account for the amplitude of crystallographic bending, leading us to propose a model similar
to “flexural slip” folding, where folded layers are micrometer-wide opx layers between thin planar clinopyroxene (cpx) exsolutions.
Extension (compression) in the extrados (intrados) of the folded layer is accommodated by dislocations at the cpx–opx interfaces.
Alternatively to distributed deformation, crystal bending also localizes in grain boundaries (GBs), mostly oriented close
to the (001) plane and with various misorientation angles but misorientation axes consistently close to the b-axis. For misorientation up to a few degrees, GBs were imaged as tilt walls composed of regularly spaced (100)[001] dislocations.
For misorientation angles of 7°, individual dislocations are no longer visible, but high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) observation
showed the partial continuity of opx tetrahedral chains through the boundary. For 21° misorientation, the two adjacent crystals
are completely separated by an incoherent boundary. In spite of these atomic-scale variations, all GBs share orientation and
rotation axis, suggesting a continuous process of misorientation by symmetric incorporation of (100)[001] dislocations. In
addition to the dominant GBs perpendicular to the (100) plane, boundaries at low angle with (100) planes are also present,
incorporating dislocations with a component of Burgers vector along the a-axis. The two kinds of boundaries combine to delimit subgrains, which progressively rotate with respect to host grains around
the b-axis, eventually leading to recrystallization of large porphyroclasts. 相似文献

Despite its extreme aridity, the Badain Jaran Desert is rich in groundwater. In the southeastern part of the desert, it is
characterized by coexistence of high megadunes and a great number of lakes. Deuterium and oxygen 18 isotope compositions as
well as hydrochemistry of groundwater, lake water, soil water and river water were investigated in detail to gain an insight
into their relationships and the origin of the ground-water. The results show that the groundwater and the lake water are
genetically related, but unrelated to local precipitation and the leakage of Heine River at northern slope of Qilian mountain.
δD and δ18O values of deep soil water (lower than 40 cm) and groundwater plot on the same evaporation line E11, which shows that they
have the same recharge source. The point of intersection between E11 and LMWL suggests that the groundwater originates from
the water resource which has a weighted mean value that is lighter by some 6‰ δ18O than the local precipitation in Badain Jaran Desert. 3H data of water samples shows that the groundwater in Badain Jaran Desert originates from the water recharged after the nuclear
test. The deep fault zone underground maybe the water circulation channel based on Helium analysis of groundwater. The result

The paper focuses on relocation, retreat, zoning, insurance, and subsidy as major dimensions of coastal hazard mitigation measures that have resurfaced as potent forces for combating coastal inundation and climate change. It reviews the issues surrounding the practice of these measures and discusses compatibilities of policies, engineering measures, and natural defense. Property rights, development interest, and distorted financial incentives pose as main barriers to coastal relocation and retreat policies in hazard-prone areas. To understand and propose coastal adaptation solutions, the paper recommends place-based studies of local coastal adaptation strategies. Place-based studies offer an in-depth knowledge of local conditions specifically regarding the level of implementation of hazard mitigation policies, and shed light on important trade-offs and synergies of various hazard policies. In addition, coupling existing hazard mitigation policies with coastal management and community management can better inform long-term and comprehensive planning of coastal adaptation. 相似文献

An eddy covariance (EC) station was deployed at Solfatara crater, Italy, June 8–25, 2001 to assess if EC could reliably monitor CO2 fluxes continuously at this site. Deployment at six different locations within the crater allowed areas of focused gas venting to be variably included in the measured flux. Turbulent (EC) fluxes calculated in 30-min averages varied between 950 and 4460 g CO2 m−2 d−1; the highest measurements were made downwind of degassing pools. Comparing turbulent fluxes with chamber measurements of surface fluxes using footprint models in diffuse degassing regions yielded an average difference of 0% (±4%), indicating that EC measurements are representative of surface fluxes at this volcanic site. Similar comparisons made downwind of degassing pools yielded emission rates from 12 to 27 t CO2 d−1 for these features. Reliable EC measurements (i.e. measurements with sufficient and stationary turbulence) were obtained primarily during daytime hours (08:00 and 20:00 local time) when the wind speed exceeded 2 m s−1. Daily average EC fluxes varied by ±50% and variations were likely correlated to changes in atmospheric pressure. Variations in CO2 emissions due to volcanic processes at depth would have to be on the same order of magnitude as the measured diurnal variability in order to be useful in predicting volcanic hazard. First-order models of magma emplacement suggest that emissions could exceed this rate for reasonable assumptions of magma movement. EC therefore provides a useful method of monitoring volcanic hazard at Solfatara. Further, EC can monitor significantly larger areas than can be monitored by previous methods. 相似文献

We develop a simple model to evaluate the daily flow discharges in the ablation season for the 11 km2 Pantano basin in the Retiche Italian Alps, based upon the data gathered during a three years field campaign. The Pantano basin embeds the Venerocolo debris covered and the Avio debris free glaciers, covering 2.14 km2 in the Adamello Group, where the widest Italian glacier Adamello is located. First, degree-day models based upon air temperature are tuned to calculate snow and ice melt at daily scale. Glaciers’ meteorological data are collected from an automatic weather station (AWS), operating on the glacier during summer 2007. The melt factors in the debris covered areas of the glacier are estimated against debris thickness, using a data driven parameterization. The flow discharge from the catchment is estimated using semi distributed flow routing for the ablation seasons of four years, from 2006 to 2009. The predicted discharges are compared to those derived from inverse reservoir's routing at the Benedetto lake, catching the basin outflow. The proposed approach is valuable as a tool to investigate the hydrology of poorly gauged glacierized areas, including those with debris covered ice, widely diffused and yet poorly understood. Pending accurate parameterization the approach is usable for water resources evaluation and for long term assessment of the climate change impact on the glacierized areas within the Alps. 相似文献

Earthquake engineering research and development have received much attention since the first half of the twentieth century. This valuable research presented a huge step forward in understanding earthquake hazard mitigation, which resulted in appreciable reduction of the effects of past earthquakes. Nevertheless, the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and the subsequent tsunami resulted in major damage. This paper presents the timeline of earthquake mitigation and recovery, as seen by the authors. Possible research directions where the authors think that many open questions still remain are identified. By using a surface air temperature index (SATI) averaged over the eastern Tibetan Plateau (TP),
investigation is conducted on the short-term climate variation associated with the interannual air warming
(or cooling) over the TP in each summer month. Evidence suggests that the SATI is associated with a consistent
teleconnection pattern extending from the TP to central-western Asia and southeastern Europe. Associated
rainfall changes include, for a warming case, a drought in northern India in May and June, and a stronger
mei-yu front in June. The latter is due to an intensified upper-level northeasterly in eastern China and
a wetter and warmer condition over the eastern TP. In the East Asian regions, the time-space distributions
of the correlation patterns between SATI and rainfall are more complex and exhibit large differences from
month to month. Some studies have revealed a close relationship between the anomalous heating over the TP
and the rainfall anomaly along the Yangtze River valley appearing in the summer on a seasonal mean time-scale,
whereas in the present study, this relationship only appears in June and the signal's significance becomes
weaker after the long-term trend in the data was excluded. Close correlations between SATI and the convection
activity and SST also occur in the western Pacific in July and August: A zonally-elongated warm tone in the
SST in the northwestern Pacific seems to be a passive response of the associated circulation related to a
warm SATI. The SATI-associated teleconnection pattern provides a scenario consistently linking the broad
summer rainfall anomalies in Europe, central-western Asia, India, and East Asia. 相似文献

We have reinvestegated the suggestion that collisional fragmentation in the asteroid belt can account for its present luminosity function. We suggest, based on the usual Boltzmann-type equation for this process, that for the brightest asteroids the time scale for a catastropic collision is 1.2 × 109yr. However, the assumption of molecular chaos is not valid in the asteroid belt and we demonstrate a new method to determine the necessary corrections. We then obtain, using the new procedure, a lower limit for a collision time. For the above sample it is 2 × 1011yr. This, we believe, rules out collisional evolution of the asteroid belt since its formation. Finally, we also show histograms of eccentricity, inclination, absolute magnitude, height above the ecliptic plane, and argument of perihelion for the 2829 asteroids with well-determined orbits. We study a solar flare that occurred on 10 September 2002, in active region NOAA 10105, starting around 14:52 UT and lasting approximately 5 minutes in the radio range. The event was classified as M2.9 in X-rays and 1N in Hα. Solar Submillimeter Telescope observations, in addition to microwave data, give a good spectral coverage between 1.415 and 212 GHz. We combine these data with ultraviolet images, hard and soft X-ray observations, and full-disk magnetograms. Images obtained from Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager data are used to identify the locations of X-ray sources at different energies, and to determine the X-ray spectrum, while ultraviolet images allow us to characterize the coronal flaring region. The magnetic field evolution of the active region is analyzed using Michelson Doppler Imager magnetograms. The burst is detected at all available radio frequencies. X-ray images (between 12 keV and 300 keV) reveal two compact sources. In the 212 GHz data, which are used to estimate the radio-source position, a single compact source is seen, displaced by 25″ from one of the hard X-ray footpoints. We model the radio spectra using two homogeneous sources, and we combine this analysis with that of hard X-rays to understand the dynamics of the accelerated particles. Relativistic particles, observed at radio wavelengths above 50 GHz, have an electron index evolving with the typical soft–hard–soft behavior. 相似文献
