Summary The modification of the flow structure arising from the removal of large patches of trees in a managed forest plantation near
Gainesville, Florida is described. Using wavelet analysis of turbulence measurements taken above a forest canopy hundreds
of meters downwind from the forest gap and well outside the footprint, the present paper examines changes in flow characteristics
and demonstrates that the presence of the nearby clearcut introduces extraneous coherent events passing by the eddy-covariance
flux measurement system. 相似文献
The turbulence field obtained using a large-eddy simulation model is used to simulate particle dispersion in the convective
boundary layer with both forward-in-time and backward-in-time modes. A Lagrangian stochastic model is used to treat subgrid-scale
turbulence. Results of forward dispersion match both laboratory experiments and previous numerical studies for different release
heights in the convective boundary layer. Results obtained from backward dispersion show obvious asymmetry when directly compared
to results from forward dispersion. However, a direct comparison of forward and backward dispersion has no apparent physical
meaning and might be misleading. Results of backward dispersion can be interpreted as three-dimensional or generalized concentration
footprints, which indicate that sources in the entire boundary layer, not only sources at the surface, may influence a concentration
measurement at a point. Footprints at four source heights in the convective boundary layer corresponding to four receptors
are derived using forward and backward dispersion methods. The agreement among footprints derived with forward and backward
methods illustrates the equivalence between both approaches. The paper shows explicitly that Lagrangian simulations can yield
identical footprints using forward and backward methods in horizontally homogeneous turbulence. 相似文献
The contribution of upwind sources to measurements of vertical scalar flux density as a function of fetch (footprint) is predicted using a Markovian simulation of fluid particle trajectories. Results suggest that both footprint peak position and magnitude change dramatically with surface roughness, thermal stability and observation levels. Results also indicate that the much used 100 to 1 fetch-to-height ratio grossly underestimates fetch requirements when observations are made above smooth surfaces, in stable conditions or at high observation levels. 相似文献
This study contributes with the first data on physical and taxonomical structure of macrofaunal assemblages of ma¨erl beds from the Canary Islands. Ma¨erl beds and Cymodocea nodosa meadows of the Canary Islands are considered biodiversity hot-spots in terms of taxonomic and functional biodiversity with a broad geographical and depth ranges. The authors have studied the structure of the macrofaunal assemblages on different habitat types (Cymodocea, Caulerpa, sabellid field, garden eel and ma¨erl beds). Samples were taken at a range of depths between 14 and 46 m. Correlations were performed among abiotic variables (granulometry, organic matter, nitrogen and phosphates) and the most abundant taxa. Similarity analysis was performed to explore the patchiness of seabeds at a local scale. Significant differences were found in macrofaunal assemblages among seabed types, with highest abundances and lowest biodiversity in sabellid fields, where the sabellid Bispira viola dominated. The polychaetes Aponuphis bilineata and Chone filicauda and the mollusc Turritella brochii were the most abundant taxa on ma¨erl beds. The mosaic of granulometric conditions would explain the associated macroinfaunal community structure and contribute to the creation of diversity on these relatively well preserved seabeds at a local scale. 相似文献
Ribbed mussels (Geukensia demissa) help form the basis of highly productive salt marshes along the Atlantic coast of North America, in southern New England, and further south. Little is known about their ecology and reproductive biology at more northern latitudes (Maritime Canada; >43o N). As a step in determining the sustainability of ribbed mussel populations near the northern limit of their range (Northumberland Strait, Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada), gametogenesis and spawning were monitored over 3 years (May–August 2012, June–November 2014, and April–October 2015) at four sites spanning ~100 km of coastline. These sites are typically ice-covered from mid-December to March or April. The onset of gametogenesis was later, the reproductive stages on any given date were more varied, and the reproductive season was shorter than for southern populations of ribbed mussels. Oocyte density and size did not vary among sites, indicating similar site-level processes, but did vary among years. Oocyte density and size varied greatly among mussels at a given site, and within a single gonad. This highlights the importance of individual variability, perhaps related to mussel location within a marsh, and the effects of nutrients and temperature on gonads. Accounting for the individual-level variability, reproductive output was estimated at ~105 oocytes per ripe female mussel, which is within the fecundity estimates for other marine bivalve broadcast spawners. 相似文献
Detailed facies analysis of a 350 m long core of upper Campanian–Maastrichtian chalk at Stevns Peninsula, eastern Denmark, shows that four mudstone and wackestone chalk facies account for close to 95% of the succession, and that bioturbated mudstone chalk alone accounts for nearly 55% of the sediment. Sedimentation took place in deep water, below the photic zone and storm‐wave base, and is characterized by decimetre to metre‐scale variations in facies and trace fossil assemblages indicating repeated shifts in depositional environment. Integration of facies with published data on sea‐surface temperature and accumulation rates suggests that sea‐surface temperature is the most important parameter in controlling stratification of the water column and thereby, indirectly, the observed variations in depositional facies. However, bioturbated mudstone chalk occurs in all stratigraphic levels independent of accumulation rates and sea temperatures and is interpreted to represent a very broad set of deep water environmental conditions with an ample supply of calcareous nannofossil debris and intense bioturbation. Longer term shifts in deposition are best expressed by distribution of clay, flint and bioturbated micro‐wackestone, bioturbated wackestone and laminated mudstone chalk facies, whereas the trace fossil assemblages appear less useful. The data set indicates overall shallowing over time with two distinctive events of clay influx to the basin during the late Campanian–earliest Maastrichtian and late Maastrichtian. 相似文献
France experiences catastrophic floods on a yearly basis, with significant societal impacts. In this study, we use multiple sources (insurance datasets, scientific articles, satellite data, and grey literature) to (1) analyze modern flood disasters in the PACA Region; (2) discuss the efficiency of French public policy instruments; (3) perform a SWOT analysis of French flood risk governance (FRG); and (4) suggest improvements to the FRG framework. Despite persistent government efforts, the impacts of flood events in the region have not lessened over time. Identical losses in the same locations are observed after repeated catastrophic events. Relative exposure to flooding has increased in France, apparently due to intense urbanization of flood-prone land. We suggest that the French FRG could benefit from the following improvements: (1) regular updates of risk prevention plans and tools; (2) the adoption of a build back better logic; (3) taking undeclared damages into account in flood risk models; (4) better communication between the actors at the different steps of each cycle (preparation, control, organization, etc.); (5) better communication between those responsible for risk prevention, emergency management, and disaster recovery; (6) an approach that extends the risk analysis outside the borders of the drainage basin; and (7) increased participation in FRG from local populations.
