We estimate the distribution of slip in the dip section of the causative fault for the 1905 Kangra earthquake by applying
the minimum norm inversion technique to differences in pre- and post-earthquake levelling data collected along the Saharanpur-Dehradun-Mussoorie
highway. For this purpose it is assumed that the causative fault of the 1905 Kangra earthquake was planar with a dip of 5°
in the northeast direction and that it had a depth of 6 km at the southern limit of the Outer Himalaya in Dehradun region.
The reliably estimated maximum slip on the fault is 7.5 m under the local northern limit of the Outer Himalaya. Using the
inverted slip distribution we estimate that the maximum permanent horizontal and vertical displacements at the surface due
to the Kangra earthquake were about 4 m and 1.5m respectively. The maximum transient displacements at the surface should have
exceeded these permanent displacements. These estimates of maximum slip on the causative fault and the resultant maximum permanent
and transient displacements at the surface during the Kangra earthquake may be taken tentatively as being representative of

The freshwater pondsnail Viviparus bengalensis (LINNAEUS) was exposed to sublethal concentrations of pentachlorophenol (1.561 mg/l) and sodium pentachlorophenate (0.991 mg/l). Both the chemicals caused considerable damage in the mantle of the snail. The mean survival periods and the LC50 are determined. Toxicity increases in the following sequence (LC50,96h) (in mg/1): novocron (22.65), rogor (18.97), chlordane (0.341), aldrin (0.017), lindane (0.0160), endosulfan (0.0027). An algorithm for the Theis solution of pumping test data has been developed taking into account the basic principles of graphical approach of curve-matching. The method is simple and does not need initial approximation of transmissivity and storativity as required by approaches suggested by Saleem (1970) and Mc Elwee (1980). As a measure of error of fitting, integral square error is computed between the observed drawdown and drawdown calculated from the theoretical equation with the values of coefficients estimated by the procedure. Also root mean square deviation in drawdown is calculated. The algorithm is capable of identifying data with errors in observation or recording. The reliability of the algorithm and its limitations are discussed on the basis of test runs with synthetic data having varying magnitudes of error and varying distributions of error points in the data set. The estimates of parameters by the proposed algorithm for a typical field test data compare very well with the estimates by the sensitivity approach developed by Mc Elwee (1980). 相似文献

A class of regression type estimators of the parameterd in a fractionally differencedARMA (p, q) process is introduced. This class is an extension of the estimator considered by Geweke and Porter-Hudak. In a simulation study, we compared three estimators from this class together with two approximate maximum likelihood estimators which are based on two separate approximations to the likelihood. One approximation ignores the determinant term in the likelihood and the other includes a compensating factor for the determinant. When the determinant term is included, the estimate tends to be much less biased and is in general superior to the other estimate. The approximate maximum likelihood estimator out performed, by a large margin, the regression type estimators for pureARIMA (0,d,0) processes. However, forARIMA (1,d,1) processes, a regression type estimator turned out to be the best for realizations of length 400 in 3 out of the 5 cases we tried. 相似文献

Using Pc1 data gathered at Ottawa (45.4°N, 75.6°W; L = 3.5) during the International Magnetospheric Study (IMS) period, relationships between ssc, Dst, and the occurrence of Pc1 pulsations are examined. It is found that the sudden compressions of the magnetoshere that took place in the postnoon period (13–22 hLT) frequently produced Pc1 pulsations at Ottawa. This pulsational activity took place about 25 to 125 hours after the occurrence of ssc’s of amplitude 5–25 nT and duration 2–6 min. Pc1’s also occur 20 to 40 hours after maximum Dst deviations in the range 50–110 nT, when the ring current has decayed to a considerable extent (5 nT < Dst < 25 nT). In agreement withHeacock andKivinen (1972), it appears that during the storm recovery phase energetic particles of the ring current with anisotropic pitch angle distribution interact with the surrounding cold plasma of the plasmasphere. When stable trapping limit is reached, proton cyclotron instability is triggered and pulsations in the Pc1 period range are generated. 相似文献
