The energetics involved in the formation of neutron stars in close binaries as a result of supernova explosions are considered. The gravitational binding energy of the neutron star must find proper outlets. The mass ejection and cosmic ray particles can carry away only a small fraction (up to a few per cent) of this energy. Most of the binding energy goes into rotational kinetic energy, gravitational radiation and neutrino emissions. The equilibrium distribution of physical properties in static or uniformly rotating infinitely extended self-gravitating magnetized cylinders is studied taking the magnetic pressure to bear a constant ratio to the gas pressure at each point. The fluid is idealized either as a perfects gas, obeying polytropic or isothermal relation, or a degenerate gas at zero temperature. Results from new observations of pulsars using the Ooty Radio Telescope(ORT) are used for investigating the structure of the Local InterstellarMedium (LISM) and the nature of the plasma turbulence spectrum in theInterstellar Medium (ISM). The observations show anomalous scintillationtowards several nearby pulsars, and these are modelled in terms oflarge-scale spatial inhomogeneities in the distribution of plasma densityfluctuations in the LISM. A 3-component model, where the Solar neighborhoodis surrounded by a shell of enhanced plasma turbulence, is proposed for theLISM. The inferred scattering structure is strikingly similar to the LocalBubble. The nature of the plasma turbulence spectrum is found to be Kolmogorov-like in the spatial scale range 106 m to 1011 m,and there is evidence for excess power at larger spatial scales. 相似文献

The dissolved fluoride (F−) in the Lower Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) river system, Bengal basin, Bangladesh, was studied during 1991–1993 to determine
its distribution and source in the basin, and its annual flux to the Bay of Bengal. The concentration of dissolved F− varied between 2 and 11 μmol l−1 with statistically significant variations both spatially and temporally in the basin. Such variations are attributable to
the geology of the individual subbasins (Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna), dilution by rainwater during monsoon and groundwater
contribution to the river systems during dry season. Correlation coefficients among F− and major cations and anions suggest diverse inorganic processes responsible for regulating the concentration of F− in these river systems. However, fluorite seems to be one of the major sources of dissolved F−. The concentration of F− in the Lower GBM river system is low compared to the rivers draining Deccan Plateau and arid regions of the subcontinent,
for example, Yamuna and its tributaries. However, it is within the range of most of the other Peninsular and Himalayan rivers.
The GBM system contributes about 115×103 tonnes year−1 of dissolved F− into the Bay of Bengal, and thus accounts for about 3% of the global F− flux to the oceans annually.

Given the structural shortcomings of conceptual rainfall–runoff models and the common use of time‐invariant model parameters, these parameters can be expected to represent broader aspects of the rainfall–runoff relationship than merely the static catchment characteristics that they are commonly supposed to quantify. In this article, we relax the common assumption of time‐invariance of parameters, and instead seek signature information about the dynamics of model behaviour and performance. We do this by using a temporal clustering approach to identify periods of hydrological similarity, allowing the model parameters to vary over the clusters found in this manner, and calibrating these parameters simultaneously. The diagnostic information inferred from these calibration results, based on the patterns in the parameter sets of the various clusters, is used to enhance the model structure. This approach shows how diagnostic model evaluation can be used to combine information from the data and the functioning of the hydrological model in a useful manner. From an analysis of a limited number of strong-motion data recorded in northeast Indian region, the in-slab earthquakes along the Indo-Burmese subduction zone are found to be characterized by much larger ground motion amplitudes than that for the earthquakes along other subduction zones around the world. Specific type of source, propagation path and site geologic condition may perhaps simultaneously be responsible for such anomalous behaviour. The empirical attenuation relations developed by Atkinson and Boore [3] using a global database for subduction zone earthquakes have been therefore suitably modified to be more appropriate for the northeast India. The modified relationships are developed by combining the data for both horizontal and vertical components of motion. The response spectra of the accelerograms recorded in northeast India from earthquakes with widely varying magnitude and distance are, in general, found to match very well with the predictions from the modified attenuation model. The proposed model can thus be used to obtain more realistic estimate of the contribution of in-slab subduction zone earthquakes to seismic hazard in the northeast Indian region. 相似文献
