The nepheline-diopside join defines the ultra-alkaline portion of the basalt tetrahedron and the bulk composition of nephelinitic rocks lie in this join. Schairer and others established that under atmospheric pressure, the join cuts through the primary phase volumes of oliviness, carnegieitess and nepheliness. Melilite coexists with nepheliness, oliviness and diopsidess below 1160±10°C and olivine reacts out at low temperature. Experimental studies on seven compositions show the presence of a pseudoeutectic at Ne70Di30 and 1420°C, where diopsidess, nepheliness and liquid are in equilibrium. Olivine and melilite do not appear in the system and the assemblage below 1225±20°C is diopsidess+nepheliness.  相似文献

Systematic rock mass characterization is an integral part of rock engineering practices. In the present scenario several classifications are in used for rock mass characterization for tunnelling. The present paper discusses engineering geological investigations carried out for Punasa tunnel, a part of Narmada Sagar project. The horse shoe shaped tunnel is 3675.25 m long and 9 m in diameter. This straight and free flow tunnel has been constructed in basaltic lava flows erupted during Cretaceous to Eocene age, belonging to poor to fair rock mass rating (RMR) and extremely poor to good in tunnel quality (Q-system). The values of RMR and Q-system ranges from 29 to 74 and 0.0825 to 13.33 respectively.  相似文献

An attempt has been made to study the toxicity of two commonly used pesticides aldrin (organochlorine) and ethyl-parathion (organophosphorus) to the fish Colisa fasciatus (Anabantidae) and Notopterus notopterus (Notopteridae). During bioassay studies, the behaviour of the fishes was recorded. The aldrin concentration used lies between 0.021 mg/1 and 0.042 mg/1 for C. fasciatus and 0.00056 mg/1 and 0.00135 mg/1 for N. notopterus. The ethyl-parathion concentration used lies between 1.8 mg/1 and 3.7 mg/1 for C. fasciatus and 0.49 mg/1 and 1.00 mg/1 for N. notopterus.
  • – The effect of lethal aqueous concentrations of pesticides on the Fishes prior to death are usually manifested by excitation, erratic swimming ability, difficulty in respiration, increasing in ventilation rate, jerky movements of body and fin fast, up- and downward movements, convulsions, loss of equilibrium, loss of the original colour of the body skin and the excess secretion of mucus by the gills and the body wall.
  • – the TLm values for 24, 48 and 96 hours of exposition are determined for both species of fish and both pesticides at the following variables:
  • ? three levels of temperature,
  • ? three levels of dissolved oxygen,
  • ? three levels of pH,
  • ? three fish sizes.
  • – statistical analysis of variance shows, that all variables have a significant effect on the TLm values of both pesticides for both fish species;
  • – Aldrin (chlorinated hydrocarbon) is more toxic than ethylparathion (organophosphate) at all variables;

  • – the harmless concentration to C. fasciatus ranged from 0.0049 mg/1 to 0.0161 for aldrin, 0.54 mg/1 to 0.99 mg/1 for ethyl-parathion and to N. notopterus from 0.00012 mg/1 to 0.00045 mg/1 for aldrin, 0.10 mg/1 to 0.21 mg/1 for ethyl-parathion;
  • – the aldrin should be diluted at least 4000 times and ethyl-parathion 320 times of its actual concentration.

Summary Electromagnetic response characteristics of an inhomogeneous permeable cylinder surrounded by a thin insulated concentric dissipative shell is obtained in presence of a line-source of current. The 3-layer boundary value problem is solved by assuming the thickness of the shell to be much smaller than the skin-depth in the shell. Numerically computed results are presented in the form of argand diagrams to examine the influence of the shell parameters (conductivity and its proximity with the core) and magnetic contrast. The multi-frequency response of the system is also given which resolves the two conducting layers and analyzes the frequency dependence of screening behavior of the shell.N.G.R.I. Birbhum district in West Bengal, India, is one of the most severely affected districts by fluoride-contaminated groundwater. Fluoride content as high as 20.4 mg/L has been reported. Several cases of fluoride-related disorder such as dental fluorosis and skeletal fluorosis have been reported to be endemic in the district. Proper management of groundwater is very crucial. This contribution has been carried out for delineating potential fluoride-contaminated zones (PFCZ) in Birbhum district with the implementation of weighted overlay analysis in GIS environment. Twelve different potentially influential environmental parameters are integrated and evaluated. The final output map was categorised into two subclasses, i.e. ‘low’ and ‘high’, where the low region represents fluoride concentration of 1.5 mg/L and below and the high region represents fluoride concentration above 1.5 mg/L. The outcome reveals that approximately 24.35% of the study area falls under PFCZ, whereas about 75.65% of the study area falls under the safe zone with respect to potential fluoride contamination. On validation of the PFCZ, the reported fluoride contamination data in groundwater shows an overall 87.50% accuracy in prediction via superimposition method and 89.06 and 85.85% success and prediction rates, respectively, when validated with success and prediction rates.  相似文献

 R-mode factor analysis of the recently acquired data on water and sediment chemistry has been performed. Basic chemical parameters have been merged together which aid in interpreting a few empirical geochemical factors controlling the chemical nature of water and sediments of the Gomti River, a major Himalayan tributary of the Ganges drainage basin. Water chemistry seems to be controlled by three factors: bicarbonate, rainfall and silicate and phosphate factors. Sediment chemistry is largely controlled by the following four factors: clay, adsorption/desorption, Fe-Mn hydroxide and mercury factors. A shallow-focus damaging earthquake of magnitude 6.9?Mw struck the Sikkim Himalaya, north-east India, on 18 September 2011 at 12:40:48 UTC (06:10:48PM IST). The epicentre was located north-west of Chungthang on Indo-Nepal border of Sikkim Himalaya. The earthquake was widely felt in northern India and caused widespread damage to poorly built and framed structures in Sikkim region, northern Bihar, eastern Nepal, southern Bhutan and part of Tibet adjoining Sikkim Himalaya. A lot of secondary effects in the form of landslides, rockfalls and landslide lake outburst flood were caused due to strong shaking effect of the earthquake. Maximum intensity IX according to the European Macroseismic Scale-98 was observed in the meizoseismal zone surrounding Chungthang village. Asymmetrical distribution and heterogeneous damage pattern demonstrate intensity attenuation characteristics of the region. Although the regional tectonic framework of Sikkim region indicates compressional thrust tectonics regime, according to CMT fault-plane solution this earthquake involved predominantly strike-slip motion on a steep fault. Unlike Nepal and north-west Himalaya where microseismicity and large earthquakes indicate thrust mechanism, this Sikkim earthquake suggests that strike-slip principal component may imply transcurrent deformation.  相似文献

The dissolved fluoride (F) in the Lower Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) river system, Bengal basin, Bangladesh, was studied during 1991–1993 to determine its distribution and source in the basin, and its annual flux to the Bay of Bengal. The concentration of dissolved F varied between 2 and 11 μmol l−1 with statistically significant variations both spatially and temporally in the basin. Such variations are attributable to the geology of the individual subbasins (Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna), dilution by rainwater during monsoon and groundwater contribution to the river systems during dry season. Correlation coefficients among F and major cations and anions suggest diverse inorganic processes responsible for regulating the concentration of F in these river systems. However, fluorite seems to be one of the major sources of dissolved F. The concentration of F in the Lower GBM river system is low compared to the rivers draining Deccan Plateau and arid regions of the subcontinent, for example, Yamuna and its tributaries. However, it is within the range of most of the other Peninsular and Himalayan rivers. The GBM system contributes about 115×103 tonnes year−1 of dissolved F into the Bay of Bengal, and thus accounts for about 3% of the global F flux to the oceans annually. This paper discusses the need for a well‐considered approach to reconciling environmental theory with observations that has clear and compelling diagnostic power. This need is well recognized by the scientific community in the context of the ‘Predictions in Ungaged Basins’ initiative and the National Science Foundation sponsored ‘Environmental Observatories’ initiative, among others. It is suggested that many current strategies for confronting environmental process models with observational data are inadequate in the face of the highly complex and high order models becoming central to modern environmental science, and steps are proposed towards the development of a robust and powerful ‘Theory of Evaluation’. This paper presents the concept of a diagnostic evaluation approach rooted in information theory and employing the notion of signature indices that measure theoretically relevant system process behaviours. The signature‐based approach addresses the issue of degree of system complexity resolvable by a model. Further, it can be placed in the context of Bayesian inference to facilitate uncertainty analysis, and can be readily applied to the problem of process evaluation leading to improved predictions in ungaged basins.
