A comprehensive set of measurements of oxygen and hydrogen isotopic ratios in groundwaters as well as waters from rivers,
lakes, hot springs etc. taken from a variety of locations in India has been carried out for the first time. Isotopically the
most depleted samples occur in the high altitude precipitations in the Himalayas e.g. in the lakes of Bhutan and the source
water of the Ganga. The shallow groundwater data display a continental effect where the heavy isotope content decreases with
distance from the coast (about 4 to 6 per mil decrease in δ18O per 1000 km). The δ D and δ18O of these fresh waters are linearly related and an analysis of this relation vis-a-vis the meteoric water line shows the

The safety and stability of concrete and masonry dams is a great concern when blasting has to be conducted close to these dams in order to construct small hydro-electric projects. There is a danger of ground vibration amplification to those residential-type buildings that are built close to these dams.
Responses of three concrete and masonry dams were measured directly by conducting a number of blasts and by monitoring vibration in the ground as well as on the dams. The amplitudes and frequencies of the motions were analysed and vibration attenuation relations were derived. These relations were used to compare the vibration levels on the dams with those in the ground.
Because of close-in construction blasts that produced high frequency ground vibrations, there was no amplification of the ground vibrations by these dams. The measured amplitudes of ground vibration were comparable to those of the dams. 相似文献

Several Nike-Apache rockets with Lang muir probe payloads were launched from Thumba (India) to study the disturbances produced by a moving rocket. The rockets were launched during different times of the day and night. It was found that low frequency ion plasma oscillations of the order of 1 KHz frequency were observed in the altitude region 145 to 200 km. This altitude region corresponds to the rocket apogee region where the rocket velocity is subsonic. The amplitude of the fluctuations was about 1 to 2% and was found to be dependant on rocket velocity electron density in the ambient medium, rocket spin and probe voltage. It was noticed that in the case of Centaure and Petrel rockets such types of oscillations were not observed. An analysis of Canadian data for the interval 1972–1978 suggests that the AE index may be in error at times by 150 nT or more. It is shown that the AE index could be improved (1) by including stations at the northern boundary of the auroral oval, such as Cambridge Bay, in the AE network of observatories and (2) by using an interval of digitization less than 2.5 min and preferably equal to 1 min (as has been the case since January 1976), as large peaks occurring at intervals less than 2.5 min have been lost in the scaling procedure. 相似文献

seismic network in the region, which fall in the epicentral distances range of 10 to 80 km and with a local magnitude range

The peculiar rainfall pattern in Indiarenders the country highly vulnerable to floods. Forty million hectares of land, roughlyone-eighth of the country's geographical area, is prone to floods. Each year, floods cause extensive damage to life and property, losses being exacerbated by rapid population growth, unplanned development and unchecked environmental degradation. The country has been tackling the problem through structural and non-structural measures. While non-structural measures like flood forecasting aim at improving the preparedness to floods by seeking to keep people away from floodwaters, structural measures involve the construction of physical structures like embankments, dams, drainage channels, and reservoirs that prevent floodwaters from reaching potential damage centres. Almost 48% of the vulnerable area has been provided with reasonable protection, though floods continue to cause widespread losses year after year. This paper examines the incidence of floods and the trends in consequent losses in the eastern region of the country – one of the most vulnerable – with the objective of studying the efficacy of flood protection measures in the region. Based on a simple regression exercise for three highly vulnerable states in the region, the paper argues that flood protection measures have been inadequate in controlling losses and reducing vulnerability. Regressions for the three states over the period 1971 to 1996 indicate that the level of protection is an insignificant explanatory variable in explaining the number of people (adjusted for increases in density) affected by floods; while area affected, as an indicator of the intensity of floods remains the main loss-determining factor. 相似文献

Temporal variations have been observed in both dissolved helium and TDS in the form of increase in basaltic and decrease in
alluvial aquifers. The increase in basaltic aquifers has been explained by enhanced pumping of old groundwater with relatively
higher concentration of dissolved helium and salt, whereas the decrease in alluvial aquifers has been explained by dilution
from the post monsoon groundwater recharge. Therefore, the observed temporal variations cannot be ascribed to the contemporary
