A fuzzy hierarchical clustering technique using the pairwise similarity matrix is employed to find the homogenous climate subregions over southwest Iran, based on the similarity of meteorological drought characteristics (i.e., duration, intensity, onset, and ending dates). The representative subregions are recognized for different rainy seasons; for each, the regional rainfall anomalies are computed. To find appropriate drought predictors, the lag relationships of regional rainfall with seasonal Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) are examined using a conditional probability approach. The results suggest a significant negative correlation between autumn rainfall and June–August SOI. The NAO is also negatively correlated with autumn rainfall such that it is least likely for an extreme autumn drought to occur when June–August NAO is negative. A spring drought is preceded by an October–December NAO greater than 0.5. However, winter droughts do not appear to be lag-correlated with either SOI or NAO. In addition to the findings for droughts, these indices also emerged having considerable influence on wet seasons. A wet autumn tends to occur when either May–July SOI is less than ?0.5 or June–August NAO is less than about ?0.3. It is also apparent that the extreme wet springs are absent when October–December NAO is positive. This season is influenced most by NAO in both dry and wet spells. ABSTRACTThe trends in hydrological and climatic time series data of Urmia Lake basin in Iran were examined using the four different versions of the Mann-Kendall (MK) approach: (i) the original MK test; (ii) the MK test considering the effect of lag-1 autocorrelation; (iii) the MK test considering the effect of all autocorrelation or sample size; and (iv) the MK test considering the Hurst coefficient. Identification of hydrological and climatic data trends was carried out at monthly and annual time scales for 25 temperature, 35 precipitation and 35 streamflow gauging stations selected from the Urmia Lake basin. Mann-Kendall and Pearson tests were also applied to explore the relationships between temperature, precipitation and streamflow trends. The results show statistically significant upward and downward trends in the annual and monthly hydrological and climatic variables. The upward trends in temperature, unlike streamflow, are much more pronounced than the downward trends, but for precipitation the behaviour of trend is different on monthly and annual time scales. Furthermore, the trend results were affected by the different approaches. Specifically, the number of stations showing trends in hydrological and climatic variables decreased significantly (up to 50%) when the fourth test was considered instead of the first and the absolute value of the Z statistic for most of the time series was reduced. The results of correlations between streamflow and climatic variables showed that the streamflow in Urmia Lake basin is more sensitive to changes in temperature than those of precipitation. The observed decreases in streamflow and increases in temperature in the Urmia Lake basin in recent decades may thus have serious implications for water resources management under the warming climate with the expected population growth and increased freshwater consumption in this region.

Different failure modes during fracture shearing have been introduced including normal dilation or sliding, asperity cut-off and degradation. Attempts have been made to study these mechanisms using analytical, experimental and numerical methods. However, the majority of the existing models simplify the problem, which leads to unrealistic results. With this in mind, the aim of this paper is to simulate the mechanical behaviour of synthetic and rock fracture profiles during direct shear tests by using the two-dimensional particle flow computer code PFC2D. Correlations between the simulated peak shear strength and the fracture roughness parameter D R1 recently proposed by Rasouli and Harrison (2010) are developed. Shear test simulations are carried out with PFC2D and the effects of the geometrical features as well as the model micro-properties on the fracture shear behaviour are studied. The shear strength and asperity degradation processes of synthetic profiles including triangular, sinusoidal and randomly generated profiles are analysed. Different failure modes including asperity sliding, cut-off, and asperity degradation are explicitly observed and compared with the available models. The D R1 parameter is applied to the analysis of synthetic and rock fracture profiles. Accordingly, correlations are developed between D R1 and the peak shear strength obtained from simulations and by using analytical solutions. The results are shown to be in good agreement with the basic understanding of rock fracture shear behaviour and asperity contact degradation. 相似文献

The paper tries to estimate the rate of waste generation per head/per day, to identify suitable sites for waste disposal,
to find out optimal route for collection vehicles and to analyze the financial aspects of solid waste management in Moradabad
City, India.The study is based on sample of 2,500 households and secondary data. The City generates about 318 tones of solid
waste with an average per capita rate of 460 gram per day. Collection and disposal efficiency is nearly 64%. Sensitivity analysis
of the present disposal site as per the norms of Central Pollution Control Board indicates that it is moderately suitable.
Subsequently two new disposal sites were identified. Redefined routes and related issues were evaluated in financial terms.
It is estimated that by adopting the proposed plan, the expenditure on waste management will increase by about 52%, but at

Over 1 km thick Mesozoic sedimentary sequence is exposed over a wide area in the Upper Indus basin of north Pakistan along the western margin of the Indian Plate. The Mesozoic sequence is comprised of clastic facies in the lower part, while carbonate facies are dominant in the upper part. About 200 m thick mixed sequence of interbedded sandstone, siltstone, clay, and carbonaceous shale represents the lower Jurassic Datta Formation in the Salt and Trans Indus Ranges in North Pakistan. The Datta Formation constitutes important reservoir horizons in a number of oil fields in the western Himalayan foreland basins where it is encountered at a depth of about 4 km in various wells. The Datta Formation is described from different parts of the range front to understand the internal architecture of various sedimentary facies and their depositional system. The thickness and lithofacies assemblages of the Datta Formation change in different parts of the range front as well as in subsurface of the Upper Indus basin. The Datta Formation represents a coarsening upward deltaic sequence in most parts of the basin. On the basis of lithological variations and sedimentary structures, a number of depositional facies have been recognized which include channel belt facies, floodplain/abandoned channel facies, swamp facies, and lagoonal facies. Further north, in the Kalachitta and Hazara regions, the siliciclastic facies change to more complex assemblages of interbedded bauxite, silcrete, marl, and some limestone. These sediments represent deposition in a delta-plain setting of a fluvial-dominated delta with northwestward flowing channels. 相似文献

The Qolqoleh gold deposit is located in northwestern part of the Sanandaj–Sirjan metamorphic belt, northwestern Iran. Igneous and sedimentary units exposed in the area have undergone greenschist metamorphism. The area was affected by a NE–SW trending shear zone and subsequent deformation. Two different types of mineralization are distinguished in the Qolqoleh gold deposit based on geological–structural conditions indicated by microtextural analysis: ductile and then brittle. Ore-forming processes are divided into three stages: Early (I), Middle (II) and Late (III), which include quartz–pyrite (I), sulfides and gold (II) and carbonate veinlets (III), respectively. The stage I fluids are characterized by δ18O = 15.5‰ at 440 ºC, and are thought to be deep-sourced metamorphic waters; the stage III fluids, with δ18O = 1.6‰, are shallow-sourced meteoric waters; whereas, the stage II fluids, with δ18O = 13.1‰, are a mixture of deep-sourced metamorphic and shallow-sourced meteoric fluids. Based on comparisons of the D–O–C isotopic systematics, the ore-forming fluids with characteristic high δ18O and δ13C and low δD originated from metamorphic devolatilization of Cretaceous volcano-sedimentary (felsic to mafic metavolcanic rocks–shale–carbonate–carbonaceous chert) sequences, locally rich in organic matter. During late Cretaceous continental collision of the Afro-Arabian continent and the Iranian microcontinent, a crustal slab consisting of felsic to mafic metavolcanic rocks, carbonate, shale and carbonaceous chert was underthrust northwards beneath the central Iranian microcontinent along the Zagros fault. During further contraction, deformation was localized in reverse oblique-slip structures with vergence toward south; shear zones generally follow contacts between more competent and less competent rock units. Metamorphic devolatilization of this underthrust slab is the source of the ore-forming fluids that generated the Au ore belt, which includes the Qolqoleh gold deposit. 相似文献

Shale formation swelling is one of the main factors affecting wellbore instability and associated problems in drilling operation. In order to eliminate these problems, it is important to investigate formation characteristics and understand mechanisms of rock-fluid interaction, from chemical/mechanical point of view. Shale membrane efficiency is known as an important parameter affecting wellbore instability. In order to measure this parameter, many mathematical models and experimental efforts have been carried out which consider mechanical-chemical processes for rock-fluid interactions. In this study, the field equations governing the problem have been derived based on the linear chemo-poroelastic theory and solved using analytical/numerical methods. Afterward, a comprehensive workflow to characterize the chemo-poroelastic parameters of illite-rich shale is conducted in the laboratory. In fact, mineralogical and apparent properties of shale sample have been described and some setups were performed such as triaxial test and membrane efficiency. Then genetic algorithm has been applied to solve an inverse problem and get a match between experimental data and modeling results. Ultimately, the three important properties in shale-fluid interactions, i.e., shale membrane efficiency, hydraulic, and chemical diffusivity coefficient have been estimated. Comparing the simulation results with the experimental data indicates that the simulation model can appropriately simulate the pore pressure transmission test. With this approach, the required parameters can be estimated with good accuracy without using time-consuming and costly tests. 相似文献

Time delays are ubiquitous in control systems. They usually enter because of the sensors and actuators used in them. Traditionally, time delays have been thought to have a deleterious effect on both the stability and the performance of controlled systems, and much research has been done in attempting to eliminate them, compensate for them, or nullify their presence. In this paper we take a different view. We investigate whether purposefully injected time delays can be used to improve both the system's stability and performance. Our analytical, numerical, and experimental investigation shows that this can indeed be done. Analytical results of the effects of time delays on collocated and non‐collocated control of classically damped and non‐classically damped systems are given. Experimental and numerical results confirm the theoretical expectations. Issues of system uncertainties and robustness of time delayed control are addressed. The results are of practical value in improving the performance and stability of controllers because these characteristics (performance and stability) improve dramatically with the intentional injection of small time delays in the control system. The introduction of such time delays constitutes a ‘minimal change’ to a controller already installed in a structural system for active control. Hence, from a practical standpoint, time delays can be implemented in a nearly costless and highly reliable manner to improve control performance and stability, an aspect that cannot be ignored when dealing with the economics and safety of large structural systems subjected to strong earthquake ground shaking.
