We discuss three topics related to the neutron star (NS) mass spectrum. At first we discuss the possibility to form low-mass (M≲1M ) objects. In our opinion this and suggest this is possible only due to fragmentation of rapidly rotating proto-NSs. Such low-mass NSs should have very high spatial velocities which could allow identification. A critical assessment of this scenario is given. However, the mechanism has its own problems, and so formation of such objects is not very probable. Secondly, we discuss mass growth due to accretion for NSs in close binary systems. With the help of numerical population synthesis calculations we derive the mass spectrum of massive (M>1.8M ) NSs. Finally, we discuss the role of the mass spectrum in population studies of young cooling NSs. We formulate a kind of mass constraint which can be helpful, in our opinion, in discussing different competitive models of the thermal evolution of NSs. The measured sky twilight brightness of a site is believed to be connected with main factors such as geographical latitude, elevation of the site above sea level, the season of observations and the aerosol pollution. These factors may decrease the sky twilight brightness and thus improve the crescent visibility limits. The effect of these factors on the visibility conditions to see the new Moon are investigated in the present work. The results show that the visibility conditions has improved at sites situated at higher northern geographical latitudes and higher elevation above sea level. The conditions to see the new Moon in winter season is better than the summer season. The aerosol pollution has a great effect on the visibility of the new Moon at sun's depression 5°, while for sun's depression greater than 5° the aerosol pollution has a small effect.  相似文献

Samples collected from 10 depths at 25 stations in September–October 1996 and 12 depths at 28 stations in April–May 1997 on an Atlantic Meridional Transect between the British Isles and the Falkland Islands were analysed by flow cytometry to determine the numbers and biomass of four categories of picoplankton: Prochlorococcus spp, Synechococcus spp, picoeukaryotic phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria. The composition of the picoplankton communities confirmed earlier findings (Zubkov, Sleigh, Tarran, Burkill & Leakey, 1998) about distinctive regions along the transect and indicated that the stations should be grouped into five provinces: northern temperate, northern Atlantic gyre, equatorial, southern Atlantic gyre and southern temperate, with an intrusion of upwelling water off the coast of Mauritania between the northern Atlantic gyre and equatorial waters. Prochlorococcus was the most numerous phototrophic organism in waters of both northern and southern gyres and in the equatorial region, at concentrations in excess of 0.1×106ml−1; it also dominated plant biomass in the gyres, but the biomass of the larger picoeukaryotic algae equalled that of Prochlorococcus in the equatorial region; higher standing stocks of both Prochlorococcus and picoeukaryotes were present in spring than in autumn in waters of both gyres. In temperate waters at both ends of the transect the numbers and biomass of picoeukaryotes and, more locally, of Synechococcus increased, and the Synechococcus, particularly, were more numerous in spring than in autumn. There was a pronounced southward shift of the main populations of both Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus in April–May in comparison to those of September–October, associated with seasonal changes in solar radiation, the abundance of Prochlorococcus dropping sharply near the 17°C contour, while Synechococcus was still present at temperatures below 10°C. Picoeukaryotes were more tolerant of low temperatures and lower light levels, often being more abundant in samples from greater depths, where they contributed to the deep chlorophyll maximum. Heterotrophic bacterial numbers and biomass tended to be highest in those samples where phototrophic biomass was greatest, with peaks in temperate and equatorial waters, which were shifted southwards in April–May compared with September–October.  相似文献

We shall consider diffusion or single-phase flow in a multiscale porous medium which represents an infinite set of self-similar double-porosity media. At each scale, the medium consists of a highly permeable network of connected channels and low-permeable blocks. The characteristic scale of heterogeneity is ε at the highest level of hierarchy, wherein ε is a small parameter. The ratio between the channel and block permeability at each scale is ε 2. The process analyzed is described using a diffusion equation with an oscillating multiscale diffusion parameter. The macroscale behavior is of interest. The transition to the macroscale is performed by means of the two-scale homogenization procedure. One step of averaging at each level of hierarchy leads to the appearance of the memory terms in the averaged equation. The successive averaging steps lead to progressive memory accumulation, so at each step of averaging, the macroscale model changes its type, and even the result of the second step is unknown a priori. The objective was to determine the macroscopic limit model for the infinite number of scales. By the method of induction, we obtained the macroscale model for an arbitrary number of scales and its limit for the infinite hierarchy. The limit model represents the system of two equations with memory terms. The kernel of the memory operator is the solution of a nonlinear integro-differential equation. We examine the physical conditions for the origin of the decay instability of kinetic Alfvén waves in loop plasmas at the early flare stages. The synchronism conditions are used to derive a modified expression for the nonlinear growth rate of the process of the decay of the primary kinetic Alfvén wave (KAW) into an ion-acoustic wave and a secondary KAW. The threshold amplitude of the primary KAW is calculated in units of the background magnetic field strength in the chromospheric section of loop current circuit.  相似文献

Necessary conditions have been investigated for the appearance of instability of high-frequency electron Langmuir waves in plasma of solar chromosphere near the foot-point of loop structure. We have considered the earliest stage of a flare process in solar active region. At the chromospheric part of current circuit of a flare loop such instability can appear and develop as the result of combined action of large-scale electric field, Landau damping and collisional processes in preflare plasma. We have investigated the process of instability development for two possible scenarios: (a) when preflare loop plasma has a classical Coulomb conductivity and (b) when anomalous resistance appears due to saturation of Bernstein turbulence. The growth rates of instability have been obtained and analyzed in detail. It has been assumed in the process of calculation that preflare plasma can be described by the FAL model of the solar atmosphere, which takes into account the process of helium diffusion. It has been shown that Langmuir wave instability can appear in its marginal form in the area under investigation either in the presence of Coulomb conductivity or in the presence of saturated Bernstein turbulence. Existence of instability with the growth rate, which changes its sign, proves the principal possibility of generation of nondamping Langmuir waves with small amplitudes.  相似文献

A new survey of Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) narrow-angle images of gullies in the 30°-45° S latitude band includes their distribution, morphology, local topographic setting, orientation, elevation, and slopes. These new data show that gully formation is favored over a specific range of conditions: elevation (−5000 to +3000 m), slope (>10°), and orientation (83.8% on pole-facing slopes). These data, and the frequent occurrence of gullies on isolated topographic highs, lead us to support the conclusion that climatic-related processes of volatile accumulation and melting driven by orbital variations are the most likely candidate for processes responsible for the geologically recent formation of martian gullies.  相似文献

 A special experimental facility has been developed to investigate the fragmentation of vesicular magma undergoing rapid decompression. The facility operates in a regime similar to that of shock tubes and at temperatures up to 950  °C and pressures up to 200 bar. Cylindrical samples (diameter ca. 17 mm, length ca. 50 mm) undergo rapid decompression in a high-temperature, high-pressure section of the facility following the disruption of a diaphragm separating that section from a low-pressure, low-temperature section. Actual vesicular magma samples have been experimentally fragmented at elevated temperatures and pressures corresponding to those observed during explosive volcanic eruptions and the resulting pyroclastics have been photographically resolved in flight and collected for physical characterization. The results of these experiments show that the rapid decompression of highly viscous vesicular magma can generate pyroclastic ejecta via rapid and complete fragmentation of magma at high temperature. This study employs an empirical-analytical approach in combination with Monte-Carlo method to establish relationships between earthquake moment magnitude and upper limits of tsunami source parameters: double-amplitude of vertical bottom deformation, displaced water volume, and potential energy of initial elevation. The approach is based on the Okada solution for a finite rectangular fault and empirical scaling laws for earthquake sources. Results are compared to empirical and theoretical relationships published previously. Parameters of some recent tsunami sources, those for which USGS provides slip distribution data, are considered in light of the established relationships.  相似文献
