Temporal sampling does more than add another axis to the vector of observables. Instead, under the recognition that how objects change (and move) in time speaks directly to the physics underlying astronomical phenomena, next‐generation wide‐field synoptic surveys are poised to revolutionize our understanding of just about anything that goes bump in the night (which is just about everything at some level). Still, even the most ambitious surveys will require targeted spectroscopic follow‐up to fill in the physical details of newly discovered transients. We are now building a new system intended to ingest and classify transient phenomena in near real‐time from high‐throughput imaging data streams. Described herein, the Transient Classification Project at Berkeley will be making use of classification techniques operating on “features” extracted from time series and contextual (static) information. We present a comprehensive theory for the breakup conditions for ellipsoidal homogeneous secondary bodies subjected to the tidal forces from a nearby larger primary: for materials ranging from purely fluid ones, to granular rubble-pile gravel-like ones, and to those with either cohesive or granular strength including cohesive rocks and metals. The theory includes but greatly extends the classical analyses given by Roche in 1847, which dealt only with fluids, and also our previous analysis [Holsapple, K.A., Michel, P., 2006. Icarus 183, 331-348], which dealt only with solid but non-cohesive bodies. The results here give the distance inside of which breakup must occur, for both a steadily orbiting satellite and for a passing or impacting object. For the fluid bodies there is a single specific shape (a “Roche Ellipsoid”) that can be in equilibrium at any given distance from a primary, and especially only one shape that can exist at the overall minimum distance (d/R)(ρ/ρp)1/3=2.455, the classical well-known “Roche limit.” In contrast, solid bodies can exist at a given distance from a primary with a range of shapes. Here we give multiple plots of the minimum distances for various important combinations of body shape, spin, mass density, and the strength parameters characterized by an angle of friction and cohesive strength. Such results can be used in different ways. They can be used to estimate limits on strengths and mass densities for orbiting bodies at a known distance and shape. They can be used to determine breakup distances for passing bodies with an assumed strength and shape. They can be used to constraint physical properties such as bulk density of bodies with a known shape that were known to breakup at a given distance. A collection of approximately 40 satellites of the Solar System is used for comparison to the theory. About half of those bodies are closer than the Roche fluid limit and must have some cohesion and/or friction angle to exist at their present orbital distance. The required solid strength for those states is determined. Finally, we apply the theory to the break up of the SL9 comet at close approach with Jupiter. Our results make clear that the literature estimates of its bulk density depend markedly on unknown parameters such as shape, orientation and spin, and most importantly, material strength characterization.  相似文献

Acfer 217-A new member of the Rumuruti chondrite group (R)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract— Previously, three meteorites from Australia and Antarctica were described as a new chondritic “grouplet” (Carlisle Lakes, Allan Hills (ALH) 85151, Yamato (Y) ?75302; Rubin and Kallemeyn, 1989). This grouplet was classified as the “Carlisle Lakes-type” chondrites (Weisberg et al., 1991). Recently, one Saharan sample and four more Antarctic meteorites were identified to belong to this group (Acfer 217, Y-793575, Y-82002, PCA91002, PCA91241). The latter two are probably paired. With the meteorite Rumuruti, the first fall of this type of chondrite is known (Schulze et al., 1994). We report here on the Saharan meteorite Acfer 217 which has chemical and mineralogical properties very similar to Rumuruti and Carlisle Lakes. All eight members of this group, Rumuruti, Carlisle Lakes, ALH85151, Y-75302, Y-793575, Y-82002, Acfer 217, and the paired samples PCA91002 and PCA91241 justify the introduction of a new group of chondritic meteorites, the Rumuruti meteorites (R). Acfer 217 is a regolith breccia consisting of up to cm-sized clasts (~33 vol%) embedded in a fine-grained, well-lithified clastic matrix. The most abundant mineral is olivine (~72 vol%), which has a high Fa-content of 37–39 mol%. The major minerals (olivine, low-Ca pyroxene, Ca-pyroxene, and plagioclase) show some compositional variability indicating a slightly unequilibrated nature of the meteorite. Considering the mean olivine composition of Fa37.8 ± 5.7, a classification of Acfer 217 as a R3.8 chondrite would result; however, Acfer 217 is a regolith breccia consisting of clasts of various petrologic types. Therefore, we suggest to classify Acfer 217 as a R3–5 chondrite regolith breccia. The bulk meteorite is very weakly shocked (S2). The bulk composition of Acfer 217 and other R-meteorites show that the R-meteorites are basically chondritic in composition. The pattern of moderately volatile elements is unique in R chondrites; Na and Mn are essentially undepleted, similar to ordinary chondrites, while Zn and Se contents are similar to concentrations in CM chondrites. The oxygen isotopic composition in Acfer 217 is similar to that of Rumuruti, Carlisle Lakes, ALH 85151, and Y-75302. In a δ17O vs. δ18O-diagram, the R-meteorites form a group well resolved from other chondrite groups. Acfer 217 was a meteoroid of common size with a radius between 15–65 cm and with a single stage exposure history. Based on 21Ne, an exposure age of about 35 Ma was calculated.  相似文献

Thermoluminescence dating of potassium feldspar coarse grains from the fossiliferous Holsteinian marine formation of Herzeele, at the southern limit of the North Sea Basin, yields a minimum age of 228 £ 30 ka. A tentative correction for the long-term fading of the TL signal in potassium feldspar is proposed, assuming a lifetime (τ) of 711 ka. This correction would yield a preliminary age estimate of 271 £ 36 ka. These results support a minimum Oxygen Isotope Stage 7 age, but do not preclude, at this stage of our research, a possible correlation with late Oxygen Isotope Stage 9. These results are in agreement, within the error of the method, with independent absolute dates (U-Th and ESR) obtained on in situ marine shells, which range from 225 ka to 348 ka. This study provides evidence of the reliability of TL age estimates on potassium feldspar coarse grains from shallow-marine sediments older than the Last Interglacial.  相似文献

Summary. The generalized inverse theory has been applied to interpret several sets of higher mode data, previously obtained for the United States and the Pacific Ocean. The depth-resolving power of these data allows us to find the distribution of S velocity down to about 600 km. The main lateral variations of S velocity are found in the uppermost 250 km, the south-western United States showing the lowest velocities and the central-north-eastern United States the highest velocities. Between 250 and 500 km an opposite situation seems to occur, western velocities being the greatest ones, but these lateral variations are 3 to 5 times less than above and they cannot be surely established under the variance estimated for the data. Finally no lateral variations are resolved between 500 and 700 km. Some remarks may be made about the corresponding absolute models: (1) the agreement is good with published models, built with the fundamental mode alone; (2) the slight lowvelocity zone which is not required when inverting the fundamental mode alone in the central and north-eastern United States, is required when highermode data are added; (3) a rather strong increase of the S -velocity gradient is found near 360 km depth, both for the average data across the United States and the Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

This paper examines the observational evidence for the detectionof gravity modes in Scuti stars, which are p-mode pulsators.Low-order gravity modes have also been found in at least one star (FG Vir).Some reports of gravity modes may be due to systematic errors in theabsolute magnitude calibrations for slowly rotating stars. Furthermore,many detected low frequencies are not high-order gravity modes, but linear combinations,f i -f j , of the main pulsation modes. Other low frequencies are caused bya close binary companion leading to tidal deformation as well as tidallyexcited gravity modes.  相似文献

Three radial audiomagnetotelluric (AMT) sounding profiles were carried out across the narrow, 65-km diameter troctolitic Meugueur-Meugueur ring structure, central Aïr, Niger, to study its electrical configuration; one profile extended across the bedrock into the large Ofoud complex situated slightly off geographical centre within the ring. Apparent resistivity data from 27 sites ranged from isotropic to strongly anisotropic. In nearly all soundings, one- and two-dimensional modelling indicated the presence of a major zone of low resistivity (60–600 Ωm), about 200 m thick, dipping steeply inwards at an angle of 65–80° and extending to a depth of at least 2–5 km. This layer, overlain and underlain by rocks of higher resistivities in excess of 5000 Ωm, is taken to be the outer contact. A highly resistive body, about 200 m in width, dipping inwards to a depth of at least 4 km is taken to be the Meugueur-Meugueur intrusion, which is thus interpreted to be a cone sheet.  相似文献

In this work, we are interested in solute transport in fissured porous media. The medium is considered as a special case of a two-region system, and a two-equation model previously obtained from a volume averaging technique is used to derive large-scale dispersion coefficients. These coefficients are obtained as solutions of a set of closure problems and the main objective of this work is to present an efficient method to solve these closure problems. The method makes use of an unstructured grid and special techniques to take into account the fissure network. Results are compared with other existing methods on simple fissured media. Finally, the technique is applied to a complex structure.  相似文献

The critical role of iron on crystal-silicate liquid relationships and melt differentiation is mainly controlled by the redox conditions prevailing in magmas, but the presently available database merely constrains the thermodynamic properties of iron-bearing components in strongly reduced and anhydrous molten silicate where iron is in the ferrous form. This paper provides new standard states for pure ferrous (FeOliq) and ferric (Fe2O3liq) molten iron oxides and extends the experimental database towards oxidizing and water-bearing domains. Iron-iridium, iron-platinum alloys, magnetite or hematite were equilibrated with synthetic silicic liquids at high temperature and high pressure under controlled oxygen fugacity (fO2) to determine activity-composition relationships for FeOliq and Fe2O3liq. Between 1000 and 1300°C, the fO2 ranges from that in air to 3-log units below that of the nickel-nickel oxide buffer (NNO). Experiments were performed on both anhydrous and hydrous melts containing up to 6-wt.% water. Incorporation of water under reducing conditions increases the activity coefficient of FeOliq but has an opposite effect on Fe2O3liq. As calcium is added to system, the effect of water becomes weaker and is inverted for Fe2O3liq. Under oxidizing conditions, water has a negligible effect on both activities of FeOliq and Fe2O3liq. In contrast, changes in redox conditions dominate the activity coefficients of both FeOliq and Fe2O3liq, which increase significantly with increasing fO2. The present results combined with the previous work provide a specific database on the energetics of iron in silicate melts that cover most of the condition prevailing in natural magmas.  相似文献
