The increasing interest in radioactivity has brought about the need for an assessment of human exposure to radiation. It is, therefore, necessary to examine naturally occurring radioactivity in the environment, especially its occurrence in groundwater. The aim of this work was then to study the levels and behavior of the most significant natural radionuclides, also in order to improve the knowledge of the hydrochemical processes involved in the selected groundwater systems. Natural radioactivity in fifteen Calabrian groundwaters for human use was investigated through high-resolution gamma spectrometry (with a negative-biased Ortec HPGe detector) and liquid scintillation measurements. Particular attention was given on those radionuclides (3H, 238U, 226Ra, and 228Ra), which contribute in a significant way to the overall effective dose received by members of the public due to the intake of drinking water originating from groundwater systems. The activity concentration of 238U varied from 1 to 51 mBq/L, as a result of the geology of the investigated area and of the oxidizing conditions that favored U dissolution. 226Ra presented a broad range of activity concentrations (0.011–0.14 mBq/L), lower than uranium ones because radium occurs in groundwater under reducing conditions. Some heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Be, Hg, Ag, As, Tl, Sb, Se, and Ni) were also investigated through ICP-MS measurements and compared with the limits set by the Italian Legislation. Metals are released into the environment by both natural and anthropogenic sources; they leach into underground waters, moving along water pathways and eventually depositing in the aquifer.  相似文献

A new code has been used to simulate the formation of elliptical galaxies via a dissipationless collapse by a numerical experiment. Preliminary results of numerical simulations are presented for initial 2T/|W| conditions ranging from 10–2 to 10–5. Successful scaling of agricultural development strategies is fundamental to increased production and yields, yet targeting efforts frequently fail to fully consider the underlying biophysical drivers of agricultural marginality, particularly at fine spatial resolutions. We present a heuristic for intelligent targeting, utilizing remotely sensed information to identify the intersection between marginal conditions for performance of a staple crop and the optimal niche for technologies that improve crop performance. Here, we explore the geographic potential of maize diversification with pigeonpea, a crop with soil productivity enhancing properties. Overall, 79 percent of agricultural land in Malawi exhibits climate conditions optimal for pigeonpea cultivation and, in total, approximately 51 percent of Malawian maize-based farming is expected to receive some benefit from pigeonpea integration, with 9 percent receiving predictable and substantial benefits. These findings illustrate the geographic scaling potential of pigeonpea in Malawi and provide direction for informed pigeonpea deployment and market development across the country.  相似文献

New palaeoseismic trenching across the main splay of the Fucino fault system provides evidence for a High Middle Age surface‐faulting episode conceivably associated with a disruptive earthquake, similar to the one that occurred in 1915 (Mw 7.0). The existence of this event, which has already been suggested by some previous studies, implies a shortening of the recurrence interval for Mw 7.0 earthquakes with respect to current knowledge. If we assume that the palaeoseismic Holocene record is complete, this shortening is focused in the historical period, when the Fucino structure sourced three strong earthquakes in only 1.4 ka. A similar clustering of energy release in the recent past is consistent with both palaeoseismological studies on other faults affecting the Apennine divide, and the high GPS strain rates observed in the same chain sectors.  相似文献

In the present work we analyse one of the active normal faults affecting the central Apennines, i.e. the Mt. Morrone normal fault system. This tectonic structure, which comprises two parallel, NW-SE trending fault segments, is considered as potentially responsible for earthquakes of magnitude ≥ 6.5 and its last activation probably occurred during the second century AD. Structural observations performed along the fault planes have allowed to define the mainly normal kinematics of the tectonic structure, fitting an approximately N 20° trending extensional deformation. Geological and geomorphological investigations performed along the whole Mt. Morrone south-western slopes permitted us to identify the displacement of alluvial fans, attributed to Middle and Late Pleistocene by means of tephro-stratigraphic analyses and geomorphological correlations with dated lacustrine sequences, along the western fault branch. This allowed to evaluate in 0.4 ± 0.07 mm/year the slip rate of this segment. On the other hand, the lack of synchronous landforms and/or deposits that can be correlated across the eastern fault segment prevented the definition of the slip rate related to this fault branch. Nevertheless, basing on a critical review of the available literature dealing with normal fault systems evolution, we hypothesised a total slip rate of the fault system in the range of 0.4 ± 0.07 to 0.8 ± 0.09 mm/year. Moreover, basing on the length at surface of the Mt. Morrone fault system (i.e. 22–23 km) we estimated the maximum expected magnitude of an earthquake that might originate along this tectonic structure in the order of 6.6–6.7.  相似文献

A large number of unconventional investigations have been implemented, tested, and validated in the field of microgeophysics, with the aim being to solve specific diagnostic and/or monitoring problems regarding civli engineering and cultural beritage studies. The investigations were carried out using different tomographic 2D and 3D approaches as well as different energy sources, namely sonic, ultrasonic and electromagnetic (radar) waves, electric potential fields, and infrared thermography. Many efforts have been made to modify instruments and procedures in order to improve the resolution of the surveys as well as to greatly reduce the time of the measurements without any loss of information. The main new methodologies here discussed arc the sonic imprint, the global tomographic traveltime, the electrical resistivity tomography, and the control of external films (patinas) grown on stone monuments. The results seem to be very promising and suggest that it is the moment to dedicate time and effort to this new branch of geophysics, so that these methodologies can be used even more to diagnose, monitor, and safeguard not only engineering buildings and large structures but also ancient monuments and cultural artifacts, like pottery, statues, etc..  相似文献

A huge late-Quaternary landslide (about 2᎒6 m3) dammed the Colfiorito basin in central Italy. This landslide was responsible for the formation of the present saddle, which divides the basin from the Chienti river valley. Landslide damming caused persisting lacustrine conditions during the Late Pleistocene-Holocene. High-standing lacustrine episodes are evidenced by two terraces located close to the top of the landslide dam, one of which can be related to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). During this period, the landslide dam was probably overtopped by the imponded lake. Before and during the LGM, the area of the landslide dam was affected by alluvial deposition. The landslide-induced lacustrine environment has played a key role in the history of land use at Colfiorito. The presence of water close to a strategic area located at the divide between the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian regions favored its frequentation and settlement during the Upper Palaeolithic (in particular Aurignacian-Early Gravettian), as shown by the numerous archaeological remains contained in the alluvial deposits close to the landslide accumulation. During the Iron Age, the lake represented a unique source of sustenance, as indicated by the presence of peri-lacustrine settlements. In contrast, the land use drastically changed during antiquity with the Roman domination of the region. The necessity to cultivate new lands and particularly the problem of providing a food supply for Rome are the causes of the drainage of the Colfiorito lake by means of a tunnel excavated through the landslide dam. Based on radiocarbon dating, the operation of the Roman tunnel ended during the 5th-7th centuries A.D. (dates related to the deposits filling the tunnel), but the continuation of agricultural vocations in the area did not fade, and a new tunnel, which operated until 2000, was built during the 15th century. Because of the damaged conditions of the 15th century hydraulic works, a third tunnel was built (between 1998 and 2000), which permits the drainage of the Colfiorito area and the continuation of the agricultural activities.  相似文献

Structural and petrological analyses on the Alì Unit, in the Peloritani Thrust Belt, document the first evidence for Alpine exhumation associated with syn-orogenic extension in this part of the Calabria-Peloritani Arc. The Alì Unit displays ductile structures occurred during three Alpine deformation phases (Da1, Da2, Da3). Da1 and Da3 developed in a contractional context, whereas Da2 was generated in an extensional regime. The present-day tectonic contact between the Alì Unit and the overlying Mandanici Unit is interpreted as a low-angle extensional detachment responsible for the metamorphic break between the two units. Structural overprinting relationships indicate that the development of Da2 structures and related tectonic exhumation occurred during syn-convergence extension, and were followed by further nappe stacking in the Peloritani Belt. We have started a spectroscopic survey to identify new chromospherically active components and low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in recently discovered All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) eclipsing binaries. In this paper, we briefly describe our scientific motivation, the observing tools and the results obtained from the first phase of this survey. Using the available observing facilities in India, the spectroscopic observations of a sample of 180 candidate eclipsing binary stars selected from ASAS-I&II releases were carried out during 2004–2006. The strength of Hα emission was used to characterize the level of chromospheric activity. Our spectroscopic survey reveals that out of 180 stars about 36 binary systems show excess Hα emission. One of the objects in our sample, ASAS 081700-4243.8, displays very strong Hα emission. Follow-up high-resolution spectroscopic observations reveal that this object is indeed very interesting and most likely a classical Be-type system with K0III companion.  相似文献
