Hypervelocity impact sputter causes impulses substantially greater than the initial momenta of micro-grains of comet Halley's dust coma, the effective factor being discontinuous at the dust mass (0.2 g) that just penetrates the spacecraft bumper shield. Marginally non-penetrating grains determine the net drag and torque, calculated here for the Giotto shield and exposed components. The torque due to asymmetries induces a precession of the spacecraft axis, whose amplitude is solved for passage through the model dust coma, to find slowly damped oscillations of significant (1°) amplitude. 相似文献

Gas streaming through the solar system experiences both destructive and scattering processes, the latter primarily in collisional interactions with the solar wind protons. The scattering interactions can be important in filling the downstream wake. They may effectively increase the velocity dispersion and also cause discrete orbit changes.The downstream intensity moment is here evaluated analytically for particles suffering a single, discrete collision, and compared with the moment from a thermal velocity dispersion (both in the absence of a central force field). The elastic scattering collisions of protons in H-gas lead to a contribution to theL backscatter from the wake equivalent to an initial thermal velocity of about 1 km s–1, giving an intensity for cool gas of the order of 10R. This exceeds the contribution due to focussing in the solar gravitational field if the radiation pressure is not less than 0.8 of the gravitational attraction. 相似文献

Lewisian gneisses, Moinian and Dalradian sediments, and dolerites have been deformed and metamorphosed under Amphibolite Fades conditions. The metamorphic climax, with the growth of kyanite and staurolite, occurred after the cessation of the second deformational episode and before the onset of the third. Plagioclase growth ceased at or about the time of kyanite and staurolite nucleation. Metamorphic effects become less to the south and southeast while the most advanced stages occur around Inver. This paper analyses the extent to which specialisation gains can be achieved by liberalising access to fishing quotas within the European Union (EU). Fishing quotas are today exchanged between EU member states at a rate of 4% of total turnover in EU fisheries. Germany, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands are the most active. Only one fourth of these exchanges are permanent. With the management systems in EU fisheries differing among countries, comparative advantages in fisheries exist in member states with the best management practices. Hence, although positive but small specialisation gains exist in EU fisheries today, these gains might potentially be increased by liberalising access to fishing quotas and allowing transferability of quotas between individuals from different countries on a permanent basis. The analysis of the lithology, grain-size distribution, clay minerals, and geochemistry of Upper Pleistocene sediments from the submarine Shirshov Ridge (Bering Sea) showed that the main source area was the Yukon-Tanana terrane of Central Alaska. The sedimentary materials were transported by the Yukon River through Beringia up to the shelf break, where they were entrained by a strong northwestward-flowing sea current. The lithological data revealed several pulses of ice-rafted debris deposition, roughly synchronous with Heinrich events, and periods of weaker bottom-current intensity. Based on the geochemical results, we distinguished intervals of an increase in paleoproductivity and extension of the oxygen minimum zone. The results suggest that there were three stages of deposition driven by glacioeustatic sea-level fluctuations and glacial cycles in Alaska. 相似文献

Interstellar gas streaming through the solar system undergoes both elastic collisions with solar wind ions and destructive, ionizing processes. The Boltzmann equation is set up, with linear Fokker-Planck terms describing the glancing elastic collisions. Solutions combining the dynamical effects of the central force field and the diffusion in velocity space are derived, appropriate to cool gas.For the He component of the streaming gas, if initially at 100 K, the collisional heating dominates inside 2 a.u. upstream and 5 a.u. downstream. A modified formula is given for the density in the downstream wake, as enhanced by gravitational focussing. Ecological-niche factor analysis (ENFA) was applied to the reef framework-forming cold-water coral Lophelia pertusa. The environmental tolerances of this species were assessed using readily available oceanographic data, including physical, chemical, and biological variables. L. pertusa was found at mean depths of 468 and 480 m on the regional and global scales and occupied a niche that included higher than average current speed and productivity, supporting the theory that their limited food supply is locally enhanced by currents. Most records occurred in areas with a salinity of 35, mean temperatures of 6.2–6.7 °C and dissolved oxygen levels of 6.0–6.2 ml l−1. The majority of records were found in areas that were saturated with aragonite but had low concentration of nutrients (silicate, phosphate, and nitrate). Suitable habitat for L. pertusa was predicted using ENFA on a global and a regional scale that incorporated the north-east Atlantic Ocean. Regional prediction was reliable due to numerous presence points throughout the area, whereas global prediction was less reliable due to the paucity of presence data outside of the north-east Atlantic. However, the species niche was supported at each spatial scale. Predicted maps at the global scale reinforced the general consensus that the North Atlantic Ocean is a key region in the worldwide distribution of L. pertusa. Predictive modelling is an approach that can be applied to cold-water coral species to locate areas of suitable habitat for further study. It may also prove a useful tool to assist spatial planning of offshore marine protected areas.
