The total inversion algorithm and some elements of Mathematical Information Theory are used in the treatment of travel-time data belonging to a seismic refraction experiment from the southern segment (Sardinia Channel) of the European Geotraverse Project. The inversion algorithm allows us to improve a preliminary propagating model obtained by means of usual trial and error procedure and to quantify the resolution degree of parameters defining the crust and upper mantle of such a model. Concepts related to Mathematical Information Theory detect some seismic profiles of the refraction experiment which give the most homogeneous coverage of the model in terms of number of trajectories crossing it. Finally, the efficiency of the inversion procedure is quantified and the uncertainties regarding knowledge of different parts of the model are also evaluated. 相似文献

The transient phenomena associated with induced polarization are very complex and it is necessary to have both a proper understanding of the physical processes and a good supply of mathematical aids in order to make any advance in the quantitative interpretation of I.P. surveys. The analogy between the classical electrical sounding method and the induced polarization sounding method has led a number of workers to interpret the results of the latter like the results of the former. To clarify this idea, it seems very interesting to calculate a mathematical model in order to know the form of the anomaly that can be probably expected. The case of a thin horizontal polarizable layer, with the same uniform and isotropic conductibility as the homogeneous background, has been studied in this paper. The result of the calculation for the case of a single current electrode and a single potential electrode is given. From these data, the theoretical curve of IP sounding using the Wenner electrode array is computed. The master curve is compared with experimental curves obtained on scale models. A good correlation between these curves is noticed. In addition, it can be concluded that the mathematical model is proving the validity of the experiments on interpretation scale models. 相似文献

The emergence of greatly improved data sets over the past decade has heightened awareness of the close relationship between changes in the axial component of the angular momentum of the atmosphere and that of the solid Earth, the latter being reflected in small, though detectable, changes in the planet's rate of rotation. Changes in the large-scale wind field, and hence in atmospheric angular momentum, on intraseasonal through interannual time scales can be associated with a number of identifiable meteorological phenomena, whose further study has been given new impetus by the discovery of their signals in Earth's rotation. Future advances in the subject are apt to occur in connection with new data sets that will help address questions remaining about rapid changes in Earth rotation and the torques responsible for the momentum changes. Also in the coming decade, both new data and modeling approaches should help clarify the role of the oceanic portion of Earth's fluid envelope in the planetary momentum balance. 相似文献

It is shown that the so-called Kirchhoff-summation operator is of a very wide-band nature and even contains an evanescent part. As a consequence, discretization may cause serious aliasing errors, particularly for small extrapolation steps.
