We discuss the physics of the power source for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). There is a great variety of stellar systems proposed as progenitors of long and short GRBs, but any current model for the engine ultimately involves the formation of a hyper-accreting disk around a newly-formed black hole of a few solar masses. The study of such disks can shed light onto the burst composition and energy content. We present preliminary results from disk vertical structure calculations. These include neutrino transport, a height-dependent determination of the nuclear composition, and a simplified treatment of turbulent mixing. We find that vertical mixing is rapid enough to largely erase compositional gradients, and as a consequence the upper layers of the disk reflect the neutron-rich composition of the midplane close to the black hole. We review the implications of this for the nuclear composition of outflows in GRBs. Our models suggest an increasing role for pairs in the upper regions of the disk, and we speculate that a pair-driven wind could be a significant source of cooling. Elena M. Both increasing and decreasing 20th century growth trends have been reported in forests throughout Europe, but only for few species and areas suitable modelling techniques have been used to distinguish individual tree growth (operating on a local scale) from growth change due to exogenous factors (operating on a broad geographical scale). This study relates for the first time observed growth changes, in terms of basal area increment (BAI) of dominant trees of pedunculate oak, common beech and Scots pine, in north-west European temperate lowland forests (Flanders) to climate, atmospheric CO2 and tropospheric O3 concentrations, N deposition, site quality and forest structure for more than a century (the period 1901?C2008), applying mixed models. Growth change during the 20th century is observed for oak (increasing growth) and beech (increasing growth until the 1960s, growth decline afterwards), but not for pine. It was possible to relate growth change of oak and beech to climate time series and N deposition trends. Adding time series for CO2 and O3 concentration did not significantly improve model results. For oak and beech a switch from positive to negative growth response with increasing nitrogen deposition throughout time is observed. Growth increase for oak is mainly determined by the interaction between growing season temperature and soil water recharge. It is reasonable to assume that the observed growth trend for oak will continue for as long as early season water availability is not compromised. The decreasing trend in summer relative air humidity observed since the 1960s in the study area can be a main cause of recent beech BAI decrease. A further growth decline of beech can be expected, independent of site quality.  相似文献

Ice sheets flowing across a sedimentary bed usually produce a landscape of blister-like landforms streamlined in the direction of the ice flow and with each bump of the order of 102 to 103 m in length and 101 m in relief. Such landforms, known as drumlins, have mystified investigators for over a hundred years. A satisfactory explanation for their formation, and thus an appreciation of their glaciological significance, has remained elusive. A recent advance has been in numerical modelling of the land-forming process. In anticipation of future modelling endeavours, this paper is motivated by the requirement for robust data on drumlin size and shape for model testing.From a systematic programme of drumlin mapping from digital elevation models and satellite images of Britain and Ireland, we used a geographic information system to compile a range of statistics on length L, width W, and elongation ratio E (where E = L/W) for a large sample. Mean L, is found to be 629 m (n = 58,983), mean W is 209 m and mean E is 2.9 (n = 37,043). Most drumlins are between 250 and 1000 metres in length; between 120 and 300 metres in width; and between 1.7 and 4.1 times as long as they are wide. Analysis of such data and plots of drumlin width against length reveals some new insights. All frequency distributions are unimodal from which we infer that the geomorphological label of ‘drumlin’ is fair in that this is a true single population of landforms, rather than an amalgam of different landform types. Drumlin size shows a clear minimum bound of around 100 m (horizontal). Maybe drumlins are generated at many scales and this is the minimum, or this value may be an indication of the fundamental scale of bump generation (‘proto-drumlins’) prior to them growing and elongating. A relationship between drumlin width and length is found (with r2 = 0.48) and that is approximately W = 7 L 1/2 when measured in metres. A surprising and sharply-defined line bounds the data cloud plotted in EWL space, and records a scale-dependent maximum elongation limit (approximated by Emax = L1/3, when L measured in metres). For a given length, for some reason as yet unknown, drumlins do not exceed the elongation ratio defined by this scaling law. We also report and compare our statistics to an amalgamated sample (25,907 drumlins) of measures derived from around 50 published investigations. Any theory must be able to explain the drumlin statistics and fundamental scaling properties reported herein and they thus provide powerful tests for drumlin modelling.  相似文献

Log–log correlation plots between the dissociation constants of known metal–chromate complexes and those of corresponding metal–sulfate complexes at 25 °C, 1 bar were used to derive the standard partial molal Gibbs free energies of formation of unknown metal–chromate complexes involving either (i) monovalent cations, divalent cations, and trivalent lanthanides or (ii) trivalent cations (excluding those of rare earth elements, REE) and tetravalent cations. For each of these two classes of ionic associations, empirical relationships between the standard partial molal volumes, isobaric heat capacities and entropies of known metal–chromate complexes and the corresponding thermodynamic properties of metal ions have been found. These data were utilized to evaluate the solute-characteristic parameters of the revised Helgeson–Kirkham–Flowers equation of state and to compute the thermodynamic properties of the dissociation reactions of metal–chromate complexes at high temperatures and pressures.  相似文献

Bacterial communities in 16 oligotrophic ponds in Kilpisj?rvi, subarctic Finland, were studied to test the hypothesis that dissolved organic carbon (DOC) quantity and quality differently influence bacterioplankton. The ponds were located below and above treeline at 600?m a.s.l., with 2?C4 fold higher concentration of DOC below treeline. The concentration of DOC changed during the open-water season with highest values measured in mid-summer. Bacterial production, abundance, biomass were highest in mid-summer and correlated positively with the concentration of DOC. Quality indices of DOC showed that spring differed from the rest of the season. Highest specific UV-absorbance (SUVA) and humification index (HI), ratio a250/a265 and lowest fluorescence index (FI) were found during spring compared to summer and autumn, possibly indicating higher relative importance of allochthonous carbon during spring and a seasonal effect of photo-oxidation. According to Length Heterogeneity Polymerase Chain Reaction (LH-PCR) analyses, bacterial communities in spring were significantly different from those later in the season, possible due to the introduction of terrestrial bacteria associated with higher molecular weight material in spring DOC. Comparison between ponds situated above and below treeline revealed that bacteria were more abundant and productive at lower altitudes, which is probably connected to higher concentrations of DOC. The results also suggest that increased temperature and precipitation induced by global change and consequent higher allochthonous DOC runoff from the catchment could have a strong impact on biomass, productivity and community composition of micro-organisms in subarctic ponds and lakes.  相似文献

Estuarine marshes are known as suitable nursery areas for many marine migrant fishes, such as flounder. The potential nursery value of such habitats was investigated in the Venice lagoon, by using growth and production of 0-group flounder as indicators. Size–frequency distribution analysis was performed on fish samples collected fortnightly, from March 2004 to June 2005, in two marsh sites, Dese and Tessera, differing in their origin and environmental conditions. Samples were mostly composed of juvenile individuals, belonging to 0- and 1-group cohorts (the latter being present in Tessera only). A higher total production, either annual or monthly, and faster growth of 0-group flounder was observed in Dese, associated to a higher ecological performance of 0-group individuals in this site, as indicated by the higher P:B ratio values. Dese is a site located in a marsh complex characterized by the relevant influence of a nearby river, and the observed higher potential nursery value of this marsh area with respect to the other is discussed in the light of the higher trophic status and other environmental conditions in this site. The production results were also compared to those from other estuarine environments commonly acknowledged as important nurseries for European flounder.  相似文献

The spectacular eruption of Lusi began in NE Java, Indonesia, on 29 May 2006 and is still ongoing. Since its birth, Lusi has presented a pulsating activity marked by frequent eruptions of gas, water, mud and clasts. The aim of this study was to bridge subsurface and surface observations to describe Lusi's behaviour. Based on visual observations from 2014 to 2015, Lusi's erupting activity is characterised by four recurrent phases: (1) regular bubbling activity; (2) clastic geysering; (3) clastic geysering with mud bursts and intense vapour discharge; (4) quiescent phase. With a temporary network of five seismic stations deployed around the crater, we could identify tremor events related to phases 2 and 3. One of the tremor types shows periodic overtones that we associate with mud wagging in the feeder conduit. On the basis of our observations, we would describe Lusi as a sedimentary‐hosted hydrothermal system with clastic‐dominated geysering activity.  相似文献

We consider the role of the Galactic kinetic Sunyaev–Zeldovich (SZ) effect as a cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization foreground. While the Galactic thermal SZ effect has previously been studied and discarded as a potential CMB foreground, we find that the kinetic SZ effect is dominant in the Galactic case. We analyse the detectability of the kinetic SZ effect by means of an optimally matched filter technique applied to a simulation of an ideal observation. We obtain no detection, getting a signal-to-noise ratio of 0.1, thereby demonstrating that the kinetic SZ effect can also safely be ignored as a CMB foreground. However, we provide maps of the expected signal for inclusion in future high-precision data processing. Furthermore, we rule out the significant contamination of the polarized CMB signal by second scattering of Galactic kinetic SZ photons, since we show that the scattering of the CMB quadrupole photons by Galactic electrons is a stronger effect than the SZ second scattering, and has already been shown to produce no significant polarized contamination.  相似文献
