A series of airborne topographic LiDAR data were obtained from May 2008 to January 2014 over two coastal sites of northern France (Bay of Wissant and east of Dunkirk). These data were used with wind and tide gauge measurements to assess the impacts of storms on beaches and coastal dunes, and particularly of the series of major storms that hit western Europe during the fall and early winter of 2013. Our results show a high variability in shoreline response from one site to the other, but also within each coastal site. Coastal dune erosion and shoreline retreat occurred at both sites, particularly on the coast of the Bay of Wissant where shoreline retreat up to about 40 m was measured. However, stability or even shoreline advance were also observed despite the occurrence of an extreme water level with a return period >100 years during the storm Xaver in early December 2013. Comparison of shoreline change with variations of coastal dune and upper beach volumes revealed only weak relationships. Our results nevertheless showed that shoreline behavior seems to strongly depend on the initial sediment volume on the upper beach before the occurrence of the storms. According to our measurements, an upper beach volume of about 30 m3 m?1 between the dune toe and the mean high water level is sufficient at these sites to protect the coastal dunes from storm waves associated with high water levels with return periods >10 years. The identification of such thresholds in terms of upper beach width or sediment volume may represent valuable information for improving the management of shoreline change by providing an estimate of the minimum quantity of sand on the upper beach necessary to ensure shoreline stability in this region. Variations in the oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) of five cherts from the 1.9 Ga Gunflint iron formation (Canada) were studied at the micrometer scale by ion microprobe to try to better understand the processes that control δ18O values in cherts and to improve seawater paleotemperature reconstructions. Gunflint cherts show clearly different δ18O values for different types of silica with for instance a difference of ≈15‰ between detrital quartz and microquartz. Microquartz in the five samples is characterized by large intra sample variations in δ18O values, (δ18O of quartz varies from 4.6‰ to 6.6‰ at the 20 μm scale and from ≈12‰ to 14‰ at 2 μm scale). Isotopic profiles in microquartz adjacent to hydrothermal quartz veins demonstrate that microquartz more than ≈200 μm away from the veins has preserved its original δ18O value.At the micrometer spatial resolution of the ion probe, data reveal that microquartz has preserved a considerable δ18O heterogeneity that must be regarded as a signature inherited from its diagenetic history. Modelling of the δ18O variations produced during the diagenetic transformation of sedimentary amorphous silica precursors into microquartz allows us to calculate seawater temperature (Tsw at which the amorphous silica precipitated) and diagenesis temperature (Tdiagenesis at which microquartz formed) that reproduce the δ18O distributions (mean, range and shape) measured at micrometer scale in microquartz. The two critical parameters in this modelling are the δ18O value and the mass fraction of the diagenetic fluid. Under these assumptions, the most likely ranges for Tsw and Tdiagenesis are from 37 to 52 °C and from 130 to 170 °C, respectively. 相似文献

Role of the backstop-to-cover thickness ratio on vergence partitioning in experimental thrust wedges
The ratio between the thickness of the sedimentary sequences offscraped from the subducting plate ( H c ) and the average thickness of the backstop ( H b ) is expected to significantly influence vergence partitioning in thrust wedges. A series of simple sandbox experiments was performed to study the role of the H c / H b ratio in model thrust wedges. The results obtained show that thrust wedges with H c / H b values lower than 1 are essentially pro-ward verging, with minor retro-ward faulting; H c / H b values greater than 1 imply an increase of vergence partitioning. When a threshold value is exceeded, fully partitioned, doubly vergent thrust wedges develop. Comparison with natural submarine thrust wedges suggests that these experimental results may provide useful insights on the evolution of structural architecture at convergent margins. 相似文献

It is generally accepted that end-users’ perception is likely to play a pivotal role for planning and policy consideration. Beach user analysis is thus an important component defining beach management policies. In the framework of a wider project on beaches management, an investigation on residents and tourists was conducted. A survey conducted through questionnaires and interviews was carried out in six coastal municipalities. Results allowed obtaining a clear picture about user profile, perception of the beaches, awareness and attitude about themes related to beach management (i.e. Blue Flag award and beach nourishment practices). We examined interannual differences in fish assemblage structure in Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor, Florida, from 1996 to
2005 to reveal the extent of hurricane-induced changes in relation to multiannual variability for five different assemblages
in each estuary: small-bodied fishes (<generally 80-mm standard length) along river shorelines, in river channels, along bay
shorelines, and on the bay shelf (<1.5-m water depth); and large-bodied fishes (>generally 100-mm standard length) along bay
shorelines. Fish assemblages tended to differ, between estuaries, as did interannual variability in assemblage structure.
In the lower portions of tributary rivers to Tampa Bay, the small-bodied shoreline fish assemblage during August 2004 to July
2005, i.e., during and after the multiple hurricanes, was different from assemblages of August to July in previous years.
This may have been a result of physical displacement of fish or suboptimal salinities caused by increased freshwater inflow.
The small-bodied shoreline fish assemblage in Charlotte Harbor also differed between prehurricane and hurricane periods, possibly
because damage to vegetated shorelines affected fish survival through a decrease in feeding and refuge habitats. In the remaining
habitats, fish assemblage structure from August 2004 to July 2005 were within the range of variability exhibited over the
9-yr study period. There were several unusual fish assemblages that appeared to be attributable to drought conditions (1996,
1999–2000), suggesting that other major environmental perturbations may be as important as hurricanes in influencing assemblage
structure. We conclude that although the 2004 hurricane season affected some of the fish assemblages of Tampa Bay and charlotte
Harbor, these assemblages generally appeared quite resilient to natural environmental perturbations from a decadal perspective. 相似文献

The morphology, optical properties, and composition of allanite-(Ce) and allanite-(Y) from raremetal tourmalinite of the Severnyi granitic pluton in the Chukchi Peninsula have been studied, as well as the composition and structure of host metasomatic rocks and the assemblage of rock-forming and accessory minerals. The hydrothermal origin of both allanite species and their stable combination have been established. Allanite-(Y) is partly replaced with allanite-(Ce), and metasomatic rims 2–10 μm wide enriched in LREE around allanite-(Y) have been identified. The degree of isomorphic Y+HREE substitution for LREE is estimated at 16%, on average; the maximum (Y+HREE)/LREE ratio does not exceed 0.25. It is assumed that the transition of allanite-(Y) into allanite-(Ce) might be caused by anincrease in acidity and decrease in aqueous fluid temperature at the late stage of the hydrothermal process. 相似文献
