We present a statistical analysis of the relationship between the kinematics of the leading edge and the eruptive prominence
in coronal mass ejections (CMEs). We study the acceleration phase of 18 CMEs in which kinematics was measured from the pre-eruption
stage up to the post-acceleration phase. In all CMEs, the three part structure (the leading edge, the cavity, and the prominence)
was clearly recognizable from early stages of the eruption. The data show a distinct correlation between the duration of the
leading edge (LE) acceleration and eruptive prominence (EP) acceleration. In the majority of events (78%) the acceleration
phase onset of the LE is very closely synchronized (within ± 20 min) with the acceleration of EP. However, in two events the
LE acceleration started significantly earlier than the EP acceleration (> 50 min), and in two events the EP acceleration started
earlier than the LE acceleration (> 40 min). The average peak acceleration of LEs (281 m s−2) is about two times larger than the average peak acceleration of EPs (136 m s−2). For the first time, our results quantitatively demonstrate the level of synchronization of the acceleration phase of LE
and EP in a rather large sample of events, i.e., we quantify how often the eruption develops in a “self-similar” manner. 相似文献

Olivine-hosted melt inclusions in the O95 pyroclastic layer of Izu-Oshima volcano, Japan are basaltic to basaltic-andesitic in composition. The negative correlation between SiO2 and H2O in melt inclusions and reverse compositional zoning observed in olivine and other mineral phenocrysts is inferred to arise from mixing between a highly evolved and a less evolved magma. The latter is characterized by the highest S (0.15 wt.%) and H2O (3.4 wt.%) concentrations among those described in reports of previous studies. The S6+/Stotal ratios in melt inclusions were 0.64?–?0.73, suggesting a relatively high oxidation state (NNO + 0.87 at 1150°C). The presence of pyrrhotites, which are found only in titanomagnetite microlites, suggests that sulfide saturation occurred during microlite growth under at a sulfur fugacity (log fS2) value of around + 0.5 for T = 1060°C. The groundmass glass compositions are more evolved (andesitic composition) than any melt inclusions containing high amounts of Cl (0.13 wt.%) but negligible H2O (0.20 wt.%) and S (< 70 ppm), suggesting that Cl was retained in the magma, in contrast to S and H2O, which degassed strongly during magma effusion. 相似文献

This investigation comprises the hydraulic characterisation of a river located in the Mexican State of Tabasco, including the performance of its flood plain under the action of an extreme river discharge. This is done through the combination of a high‐quality validation dataset, remote sensing information, and a standard 2D numerical model. The dataset was collected during an intensive field campaign that took place in August 2009. In particular, in situ measurements of river discharge, bathymetry, water level, and velocities through a whole tidal cycle are employed along with multi‐spectral satellite imagery. The purpose of this study is twofold. Firstly, the integrated approach comprising the combination of a 2D hydrodynamic model, high‐quality in situ measurements and satellite imagery reduce the uncertainty in the model parameterisation and results. Secondly, it is shown that freely available sources of information, such as the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) data can be processed and utilized in 2D hydraulic models. This is particularly important in countries where high‐resolution elevation data is not yet available. It is demonstrated that the selected approach is useful when the study of possible consequences in a flood plain induced by an extreme flood discharge are sought. Arctic deltas, such as the Mackenzie Delta, are expected to face major climate change and increased human influence in the near future. Deltas are characterised by highly dynamic fluvial processes, and changing climate will cause considerable evolution of the riverine environment. The changes are difficult to predict with existing knowledge and data. This study quantified channel planform change of the Mackenzie Delta (1983–2013), analysing its temporal and spatial patterns. We addressed the main obstacle of research on large remote areas, the lack of data, by developing a unique work flow that utilised Landsat satellite imagery, hydrological time series, remote sensing‐based change analysis, and automatic vectorisation of channels. Our results indicate that the Mackenzie Delta experienced constant evolution but at a highly varying rate over the 30 years. The study demonstrates that the magnitude and duration of flood peaks and the presence of spring ice breakup floods determine the rate of Arctic delta planform change. Changing winter conditions and spring flood magnitudes may therefore affect the stability of Arctic deltas. However, no clear trends towards decreased recurrence or magnitude of spring floods or increased instability of the delta plain have yet been observed in the Mackenzie Delta. The delta plain was most dynamic at the beginning and at the end of the examined period, corresponding to intense flooding, whereas the rates of change were subtle during the low‐flood period 1994–2007. The largest changes have occurred along the wide Middle Channel and in the outermost delta. Relative to their size, however, smaller meandering channels have been highly dynamic. Hotspots of change in the delta plain are located in anastomosing and braiding channel segments and, at the local scale, in point bars and cut‐banks along meandering channels. Our study describes how Landsat satellite data can be utilised for advancing fluvial geomorphological research in remote areas. However, cloudiness in the delta restricts production of dense time series with simultaneous coverage of the whole area and requires manual preprocessing. 相似文献

Environmental pollution and its harmful consequences for the population’s health derived from coal production in the locality
of Ensenada (Argentina) is studied by magnetic and non-magnetic means. Coke is used for the production of industrial coal.
This is a final product obtained in petroleum refineries. Coke is a non-magnetic material showing values of magnetic susceptibility
close to zero. Conversely, the magnetic susceptibility of the coal released from factory chimneys is considerably enhanced
due to the building of magnetic fibers and spherules inside the furnace, used for coal production. Due to this property, the
magnetic content of coal can be used as environmental proxy for studying the environmental impact caused by coal industries
in urban areas. The values of magnetic susceptibility decrease as the distance from the contamination source increases. This
indicates that magnetic concentration is lower. The grain size of magnetic particles also decreases according to the distance,
which is seen when analyzing the grain size parameters. According to the different non-magnetic approaches applied, the particles
released by the industry, which affect the region, fall within the rank of breathable particles (<2.5 μm). Besides, inhalable
particles are also found (2.5–10 μm). Such determinations are consistent with inter-parametric ratios applied in the study
of grain sizes. The undesirable dust of the local coal industry also carries heavy metals which are dangerous for the population’s

This study investigated temporal variations in the vertical structure and water properties of a warm-core ring that migrated
into the western subarctic gyre of the North Pacific, based on analyses of temperature and salinity data derived from two
profiling floats, together with shipboard and satellite observation data. The floats were initially deployed into cold and
fresh Oyashio water in September 2003, and were entrained into a warm-core ring in October 2003, remaining within the ring
until detrainment in December 2004. Drastic cooling and freshening of the upper core water of the ring were observed during
the above entrainment of the floats with cold and fresh water into the ring, whereas moderate variations in structure and
water properties were observed during a quasi-isolated phase from November 2003 to November 2004 when the ring did not experience
major interactions with ambient hydrographic features. The upper part of the core water (upper core), with relatively warm/saline
water above 26.6 σ
θ
, was under the influence of the atmosphere in winter via the formation of a deep mixed layer exceeding 300 dB, and had a
prominent pycnostad below the seasonal pycnocline from spring to autumn. In contrast, the lower core, with relatively cold
and fresh water below 26.6 σ

, was not ventilated throughout the observation period. Isopycnal surfaces showed a shoaling trend of about 50 dB/year during
the quasi-isolated phase, suggesting viscous decay over a timescale of several years. Markedly cold and thick water was also

A long-term spin-up and a subsequent interannual simulation are conducted for the ocean–ice component of the climate model
intercomparison project (CMIP)-class earth system model of the Japan Meteorological Agency/Meteorological Research Institute.
This experiment has three purposes: first is to assess the ability of our model with the Coordinated Ocean–ice Reference Experiments
(COREs) forcing in reproducing the present ocean-climate; second is to understand the ocean-climate variability for the past
60 years; third is to present an example of evaluating an ocean–ice interannual variability simulation. The Pacific Ocean
is focused on for the last two purposes. After integrating for about 1500 years with repeated use of a detrended CORE interannual
forcing, the model reaches a quasi-steady state where the present climate is reproduced satisfactorily. Then, the interannual
variability simulation is conducted with the retrieved forcing trend and the result is analyzed. The simulation is successful
at reproducing the long-term variability in the Pacific and surrounding oceans. Brief analyses of the tropical and mid-latitude
upper layer, deep circulation, and the Arctic sea ice are presented. A caveat in treating other parts of the globe is due
to the recent intense convection in the Southern Ocean caused by a remarkably increasing trend of the Southern Hemisphere
westerly. Overall, the current simulation with our CMIP-class ocean–ice model is shown to be useful for studying the present
ocean-climate variability, specifically in the Pacific sector. It could also be used as a benchmark control experiment that

Bahia de la Ascension (BA) is a shallow, mangrove-fringed coastal bay connected to the Caribbean through two inlets, outlined by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. This work represents an initial investigation of the relative contribution of hydrometeorological and hydrodynamic forcing on salinity variation in this lagoon. Our objective is to assess the sensitivity of the salinity in BA to fluctuations in freshwater inflow and coastal oceanography. Two field trips were undertaken during rainy and dry seasons in 2007. Surface salinity was mapped across the system and CTD deployments carried out within BA and in the sea end-member to characterize temperature, conductivity, and water level. Also, cross-sectional CTD profiles were implemented to examine vertical stratification. The water balance indicated that 16 % of rainfall over the drainage basin (DB) becomes groundwater discharge plus surface runoff into BA during dry season, while 68 % of the precipitation input to the DB is supplied through groundwater–surface runoff to the bay during rainfalls. This combined inflow showed larger fluctuations than direct rainfall and, thus, has a greater potential to alter the seasonal salinity variations within BA. The tidal signal is selectively attenuated within BA, as diurnal frequencies are more readily filtered out than semidiurnal frequencies. Mesohaline conditions in the southwest bay are associated with freshwater sources, while saline water masses in the inlet are influenced by prevalent SE winds in the region and tidal phase, establishing a strong horizontal SW-NE estuarine salinity gradient. 相似文献

This article aims to explain and demonstrate the origin and development of a subsidence basin caused by coal mining as well as to point out important aspects of this phenomenon in engineering geology. Engineering geology needs to deal with a number of issues related to the origin and development of subsidence basins in areas affected by deep coal mining. An interesting case study from the Upper-Silesian Basin in the northeast of the Czech Republic near the Polish border is presented in this paper. There is a clear time chronological succession in the ground surface changes manifested by a ground subsidence gradation, both in their absolute values as well as in their spatial distribution. The phenomenon is documented by aerial photo time series, which optimally depict the origin and development of the subsidence. In the study area, there are changes in the landscape elements and it is essential to be considered in future land use plans. The marginal conditions of the Quaternary geological structure and hydrogeological conditions are responsible for an unconfined aquifer which manifests there as a water body in an undrained depression in the course of the ground subsidence. 相似文献

The bandpass eddy covariance method has been used to measure the turbulent flux of scalar quantities using a slow-responsescalar sensor. The method issimilar in principle to the traditional eddy correlation method but includes the estimation of high-frequency components of the flux on the basis of cospectral similarity in the atmospheric surface layer. In order to investigate the performance of the method, measurements of the water vapour flux over a forest with the bandpass eddy covariance method and the direct eddy correlation method were compared. The flux obtained by the bandpass eddy covariance method agreed with that by the eddy correlation method within ±20% for most cases, in spite of a rather slow sensor-response of the adopted hygrometer. This result supports its relevance to a long-term continuous operation, since a stable, low-maintenance,general-purpose sensor canbe utilized for scalar quantities. Oneweak point of the method isits difficulty in principle to measure the correct flux when the magnitude of the sensible heat flux is very small, because the method uses the sensible heat flux as a standard reference for the prediction of undetectable high-frequency components of the scalar flux. An advanced method is then presented to increase its robustness. In the new method, output signals from a slow-response sensor are corrected using empirical frequency-responsefunctions for the sensor,thereby extending the width of the bandpass frequency region where components of the flux are directly measured (not predicted). The advanced method produced correct fluxes for all cases including the cases of small sensible heat flux. The advanced bandpass eddy covariance method is thus appropriate for along-term measurement of the scalar fluxes. 相似文献
