Petroleum isoprenoid hydrocarbons derived from catagenetic degradation of archaebacterial lipids

The three GC coeluting C₄₀ bis-phytanes with head-to-tail, tail-to-tail and head-to-head linkages considered to be archaebacterial markers, have been recognized in petroleum by enhanced mass-fragmentography. Supporting evidence has been obtained by the simultaneous occurrence of two C₂₁–C₂₄ series of isoprenoid and quasi-isoprenoid hydrocarbons that are supposedly formed during the catagenetic degradation of the isomeric C₄₀ isoprenoids. The C₂₁–C₂₄ quasi-isoprenoid hydrocarbons have been identified conclusively for the first time by comparison with authentic standards.

Metropolization in China?

Not merely the rapid growth of the metropolitan cities in the Third World but the overconcentration of the political and administrative functions together with the economic, social and cultural activities within the metropolitan regions — in short: the primacy —should be considered as the essential component of the term metropolization.An accurate computation of the metropolitan population growth in China is difficult because of the frequent change of city area delimitations after 1953 in connection with the missing distinction between shiqu-, jiaoqu- and hsien-population in the statistics. Therefore a solid assessment of the Chinese policy to restrict the growth of the metropolitan cities seems to be impossible.Recent data reveal that there is still a strong primacy for the metropolitan cities together with a heavy concentration of this primacy in the historical core regions. The evaluation indicates that the efforts towards balanced regional development and reduction of the regional disparities could not be considered as successful so far.     

Magmatic-subsolidus and oxidation trends in composition of amphiboles from silica-saturated peralkaline igneous rocks

Summary Sub-calcic alkali amphiboles from silica-saturated peralkaline rocks exhibit two main patterns of compositional variation, which we term the magmatic-subsolidus and oxidation trends. The first is a continuous change from magmatic to subsolidus amphibole from barroisite through richterite to arfvedsonite, involving substitutions under reducing conditions, mainly of the type Al^ivCaSi(Na,K). The second trend is towards riebeckite, under the influence of oxidizing hydrothermal fluids, according to a reaction such as Fe²⁺ SiFe³⁺ Al^vi or (K, Na)^A Fe²⁺Fe³⁺. Textural evidence suggests that fluid characteristics are as important as host-rock compositions in controlling the chemical characteristics of amphiboles in peralkaline intrusive and volcanic rocks.

Magmatische Subsolidus-und Oxydations-Trends der Zusammensetzung von Amphibolen aus Si-gesättigten peralkalinen Magmatiten

Zusammenfassung Alkali-Amphibole aus Si-gesättigten peralkalinen Gesteinen zeigen zwei definierte Trends chemischer Variation, die hier als magmatisch-subsolidus und Oxydations-Trend bezeichnet werden. Der erstere stellt einen kontinuerlichen Übergang von magmatischen zu subsolidus Amphibolen dar, und zwar von Barroisit über Richterit bis zu Arfvedsonit, wobei Substitutionen unter reduzierenden Bedingungen, hauptsächlich des Typs Al^iv CaSi(Na,K), zu beobachten sind. Der zweite Trend zeigt, unter dem Einfluß oxydierender hydrothermaler Lösungen, eine Tendenz auf Riebeckit hin, entsprechend einer Reaktion wie z.B. Fe²⁺ Si Fe³⁺ Al^vi oder (K, Na)^AFe²⁺ Fe³⁺. Mikroskopische Befunde weisen darauf hin, daß die Eigenschaften dieser Lösungen genauso wichtig für die chemische Zusammensetzung der Amphibole in peralkalinen Intrusiv-Gesteinen und Vulkaniten sind, wie die Zusammensetzung der Wirtsgesteine.

Neue Ergebnisse zur Tektonik der Allgäuer und Vilser Alpen

Zusammenfassung Eine Neuuntersuchung der Tektonik in den Vilser Alpen und im Hochvogelgebiet, wo die Frage seit langer Zeit diskutiert wird, ob dort die Allgäu- und Lechtal-Decke getrennte Einheiten bilden, oder stratigraphisch untrennbar zusammenhängen, erbrachte eine eindeutige Entscheidung für den Deckenbau. Der Verlauf der Deckengrenze konnte zwischen Hochvogel und Hohenschwangauer Alpen präzisiert werden. Der interne Falten- und Schuppenbau der Lechtal-Decke hat nirgends zur Bildung von tektonisch tieferen Teildekken geführt, die internen Verschuppungen besitzen nur ein geringes Ausmaß.

A new investigation of the tectonics in the Vilser Alps and in the Mt. Hochvogel area where since a long time a discussion was going on if the thrust sheets of Allgäu and Lechtal-Decke are separate units or connected by stratigraphic sequences, a definite decision could be made in favour of the nappe structure in this part of the Northern Calcareous Alps. The internal structure of the Lechtal-Decke thrust sheet is characterized by local imbricate structure which originate from sheared folds.

Résumé On a dicuté depuis longtemps dans les Vilser Alpen et dans la région du Mont Hochvogel le problème, si les nappes de Allgäu et Lechtal-Decke sont des unités separées ou qu'ils forment une partie inséparable par des séquences stratigraphiques. Une nouvelle examen de la tectonique a affirmé la structure de nappes dans cette région des Alpes Calcaires du Nord. La structure intérieure de la nappe de Lechtal-Decke est caracterisée par une structure écaillée locale, qui se developpe de plis cisaillés.
