Summary The present note makes use of electromagnetic equations of Maxwell and those of mechanical motions to work out the problem of disturbances in two perfectly conductive media—an ideal liquid and a perfectly elastic solid-acted upon by a magnetic field perpendicular to their plane of contact. The displacement suffered by solid medium has been determined when a tangential force, exponentially decaying with time, acts in the plane of contact of the two media. The solution of the problem is achieved by using the method of Laplace transform.  相似文献

The physiographic setting of Kerala State, India, is unique. A narrow strip of the state contains a chain of lagoons and estuaries with a very high population density. The strip is subjected to severe coastal erosion during the monsoon season. A number of other problems are also associated with the coastal zone of Kerala, such as irregular dredging of black sands from the beaches, coastal flooding, hazards due to developmental activities, etc. A Coastal Zone Management Programme was developed and administered by the Centre for Earth Science Studies, Trivandrum, to provide efficient coastal management and solve some of these problems. Various programmes included under the Coastal Zone Management are the following: (1) Sedimentological, bathymetric, and geochemical studies of lagoons and estuaries; (2) monitoring of planimetric changes of beaches by profiling beaches during different seasons all along the coast; (3) studies of the nature, distribution, and provenance of black sand deposits from beaches; (4) studies of the peculiar occurrence of patchy, calm, turbid areas of water in the offshore containing high suspended sediment concentrate known as mud banks; (5) wave studies involving continuous monitoring of wave data all along the coast in order to understand wave climate and erosion; (6) sediment movement studies using fluorescent tracer to aid in the development of ports and harbors; (7) studies on various aspects of offshore. The outlines of the various programmes discussed in this article will help other states and countries to develop a coastal zone management programme according to the needs of the state or country and the nature of the problem occurring in the coastal zone.  相似文献

The Kachchh basin in the western India is known for its recent high seismicity. This study presents an application of the geogenic Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) technique for deciphering the directions of principal horizontal stress in the eastern Kachchh. The principal direction of horizontal stress obtained from EMR differs from those obtained from earthquake focal plane solutions. The major horizontal principal stress based on the EMR study shows an azimuth of N60°E ± 10°. The principal directions of EMR emissions are parallel to the acute bisector of conjugate microcracks. The azimuthal distribution of EMR signal and dimension of microcracks suggest that the EM emissions are transversely polarized. The study also deals with the first application of electromagnetic radiation emissions to identify active fracture planes in sandstones that could become potential active faults later, which might be seismogenic or nonseimogenic. This study is based on linear profiling at six different places across two major faults, the Kachchh Mainland Fault (KMF) and the South Wagad Fault (SWF) in the eastern Kachchh. Anomalously, high EMR emissions are observed in the eastern part of the KMF, indicating active surface deformation.  相似文献

The Lakshadweep are a group of coral atolls enclosing lagoons and submerged reefs and banks in the Arabian Sea off the western coast of India. The sediments in the lagoons consist of corals, halimeda, shells of gastropods, pelecypods, foraminifera, ostracods, etc. derived from the breaking up of the reefs by mechanical processes such as waves, winds, currents, etc. To study the grain-size characteristics of these calcareous sediments in the lagoons, 50 samples were analysed and the grain-size parameters were calculated. The mean of the samples range from ?1.538 to 2.161, standard deviation from 0.935 to 1.859, skewness from ?1.051 to 1.635 and kurtosis from 2.068 to 4.402. The sediments range from coarse sand and gravel to very fine sand size in general and usually are well sorted. A bimodal to polymodal character is present in the sediments due to mixing of a number of heterogeneous constituents. The coarser sediments consist of corals and a good amount of halimeda occurs in the 0 (1 mm) to ?1 (2 mm) phi class. Foraminifera predominantly occur in the interval 1 (0.5 mm) to 0 (1 mm) phi. In the range 1 (0.5 mm) to 2 (0.25 mm) phi, corals are again important, while in the sizes finer than 2 phi (0.25 mm), all the constituents predominate. The size distribution was compared with those obtained at other places such as Barracuda Keys, Gulf of Aqaba, Isla Perez and Lower Florida Keys. The present grain-size variation is not only controlled by the composition of the calcareous sediments but is also modified by the different transporting agents, such as waves, winds, currents, etc. Different energy conditions also exist in the lagoon. Mean transport direction seems to be roughly towards the SSE and saltation is an important mode of transport.  相似文献

A spectroscopic study of Hα has been carried out to investigate the properties of expanding chromospheres of late G and K supergiants. Spectra of 23 stars brighter thanV = 6.0 have been obtained at dispersions of 4–10 å mm-1 using the coude and the coudé-echelle spectrographs at the 102-cm telescope of Kavalur Observatory. The Hα profiles are all asymmetric in the sense that the absorption core is shifted to the blue by amounts ranging between -4 and -24 km s-1. Hα profiles were theoretically computed using radiative transfer in spherically symmetric expanding atmospheres covering a large range of integrated optical depths. These were compared with the characteristics of the observed line in the programme stars. The analysis shows that the Hα line is formed in a region with velocity increasing outward. The computed equivalent widths and line core displacements were matched with those observed to obtain hydrogen column densities and expansion velocities. From these, the rates of mass loss in these stars were determined to be in the range of 10610-7 M yr-1.  相似文献

The mineralogy of the 0.062–0.125 and 0.125–0.25 mm fractions of 58 selected samples from a set of 78 samples collected at a spacing of 1–2 km in the inner shelf of Mangalore were studied. Trend-surface analysis of distribution of the heavy minerals, hornblende, muscovite, garnet, and sillimanite, were made to determine the various factors controlling the mineral-distribution patterns in the area. Parts of the area showing contrasting environments were analyzed separately to determine the relationship of the regional and local trends and the various factors controlling the trends. The linear, quadratic and cubic trends for hornblende, garnet, and sillimanite were controlled by the source, westerly river flow and southerly currents; for mica, the response to processes has been the main factor. The mineral distribution in this area is mainly the result of dynamic interaction of process and response elements and a process-response model is suggested.Published with permission of the Director General, Geological Survey of India.  相似文献

Aquifer sediments from areas of low- and high-As groundwater were characterized mineralogically and geochemically at a field site in the Nadia district of West Bengal, India. Leaching experiments and selective extraction of the sediments were also carried out to understand the release mechanism of As in the sub-surface. The correlation between measured elements (major, minor and trace) from low- and high-As groundwater areas are only significant for As, Fe and Mn. The borehole lithology and percentage of silt and clay fraction demonstrates the dominance of finer sediments in the high-As aquifer. Multivariate analysis of the geochemical parameters showed the presence of four different mineral phases (heavy-mineral fraction, phyllosilicates/biotite/Fe-oxyhydroxides, carbonates and sulphides) in the sediments. Selective extraction of sediment reveals that amorphous Fe-oxyhydroxide acts as a potential sink for As in the sub-surface. The result is consistent with microbially mediated redox reactions, which are controlled in part by the presence of natural organic matter within the aquifer sediments. The occurrences of As-bearing redox traps, primarily formed of Fe- and Mn-oxides/hydroxides, are also important factors that control the release of As into groundwater at the study site.  相似文献

Summary The propagation of disturbances in a composite viscoelastic layer when subjected to an impulsive force in the presence of a primary magnetic field, has been investigated in this note. The mechanical displacement has been derived from the electro-magnetic equations of Maxwell, the equation of motion and the stress-strain relations of the materials considered and has been computed for small values of time.  相似文献

Shelf sediments at the mouth of the Hooghly River which forms the western part of the Ganges—Brahmaputra delta consist of sands, silts and clays and their various admixtures. The bulk of the sediments consists of moderately sorted fine sand to very fine sand. There is variation in lithology in the vertical and horizontal directions, as revealed from the study of the grab and core samples collected in this area, suggesting growth of the delta in different stages. In most of the samples three populations have been recognised. The grain-size variation has resulted from mixing of a number of different grain-size populations. A detailed study of the heavy minerals indicates that the suite consists of hornblende, tremolite/actinolite, opaques, zircon, pyroxenes (ortho-and clino-), garnet, sillimanite, chlorite, muscovite, biotite, epidote, monazite, kyanite, staurolite, riebeckite, carbonates and glauconite. The assemblage and the distribution patterns suggest two distinct mixed igneous and metamorphic sources for the sediments—the Himalayas to the north, mainly drained by the Ganges—Brahmaputra and their tributaries, and the peninsular shield drained by the Dhamra and other easterly-flowing rivers debouching into the Bay of Bengal. The mineralogy of the core samples in the top and bottom layers does not differ, indicating that the source area remained the same during the time of deposition of the sediments. The mineralogy of the sediments in this area, when compared with the mineralogy of the Deep-Sea Drilling Project site in the Bengal fan situated very far to the south, shows similarity because the sediments of the Ganges are carried to the deep-sea. Depending on the mineral assemblage, the area has been divided into four distinct zones: (1) Hooghly River province, consisting of hornblende, tremolite/actinolite, epidote and garnet; (2) a mixed province characterised by epidote, monazite, zircon, kyanite, staurolite, hornblende, tremolite/actinolite, biotite; (3) Dhamra River province characterised by opaques, sillimanite and orthopyroxene; (4) an offshore province comprising muscovite, chlorite and pyroxene. ILlite and kaolinite are the principal clay minerals in the sediments. The mineralogical, grain size and the lithologic studies of the sediments from the core samples suggest a southward to south-southwestward direction of dispersals of the sediments in the eastern part of the area.  相似文献
