The average auroral zone electric field pattern has been studied to determine whether such fields can, as has been suggested, drive the super-rotation of the upper atmosphere. It is shown that the local time averaged meridional electric field is small and, in fact, poleward, which would tend to drive a prevailing westerly wind. When averaged only over the dayside, where ion drag should be most important due to the higher ion density, the poleward average is even more pronounced. Thus at high latitudes ion drag acts to drive a prevailing neutral wind to the west. Model calculations indicate that without including electric fields the prevailing wind at mid-latitudes should be to the west, due to higher ion drag on the dayside. Including the present results will increase ion drag on the dayside and further enhance this effect. These results thus suggest that at middle and high latitudes the upper atmosphere does not superrotate. 相似文献

Wavelengths of solar spectrum lines should be shifted toward the red by the Sun's gravitational field as predicted by metric theories of gravity according to the principle of equivalence. Photographic wavelengths of 738 solar Fe i lines and their corresponding laboratory wavelengths have been studied. The measured solar wavelength minus the laboratory wavelength (observed) averaged for the strong lines agrees well with the theoretically predicted shift (theoretical). Studies show that the departures depend on line strength. No dependence of the departures on wavelength was found within the existing data.By studying strong lines over a wide spectral range, velocity shifts caused by the complex motions in the solar atmosphere seem to affect the results in a minimal fashion. 相似文献

The magnitude of the equatorial electrojet signature, S, is a measure of its magnetic field at the location of the satellite recording the signature. The general features of the large quantity of the magnetic field data of the electrojet observed by the series of POGO satellites from 1967 to 1970 have been studied here. We have compared the position of the axis of the electrojet as indicated by the position of the minimum of the electrojet signature with the position of the dip equator on the Earth's surface, and we find no significant latitudinal shift of the electrojet axis from the dip equator on the Earth. Apart from the expected decrease of the magnetic field of the electrojet with altitude above the electrojet, we have found unexpected cases in which the field increases with altitude. More surprisingly, we have discovered that the magnitude of S oscillates with altitude having maxima at about 460km and 635km and minima at about 580km and 725km, with a mean wavelength of 160 ± 29 km. It is suggested that this could be caused by additional weak current layers flowing above the main electrojet at about 110 km altitude. It is also pointed out that Onwumechili's model based on a single current system of the equatorial electrojet predicts field oscillation with altitude. The model therefore shows that a field oscillating with altitude can also result from a single complicated system of current unaided by additional current layers. 相似文献

We present methods to detect automatically off-limb prominences in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV), using synoptic images taken by the extreme-ultraviolet imaging telescope (EIT) on board SOHO. The 304 Å line is essential for the detection of EUV prominences, but the optimal detection is achieved through a combined image processing of the four synoptic EIT images. In addition, the difference between consecutive 304 Å images serves to identify erupted prominences. Representation maps of the quiescent EUV prominences for a given Carrington rotation are generated and used for further analysis of the detected structures. Longitudinal profiles of long-lived prominences are investigated for three examples at different latitudes, in conjunction with on-disk intensity profiles in the EUV. The observations coincide with theoretically predicted apparent longitudinal profiles, which can be distinguished from the profile of a prominence rising before eruption. The developed algorithms may be relevant to study the 3D geometry of features seen in the EUV and may facilitate the analysis of data from the future STEREO mission. 相似文献

The origin of Mercury's anomalous core and low FeO surface mineralogy are outstanding questions in planetary science. Mercury's composition may result from cosmochemical controls on the precursor solids that accreted to form Mercury. High temperatures and enrichment in solid condensates are likely conditions near the midplane of the inner solar protoplanetary disk. Silicate liquids similar to the liquids quenched in ferromagnesian chondrules are thermodynamically stable in oxygen-rich systems that are highly enriched in dust of CI-chondrite composition. In contrast, the solids surviving into the orbit of Mercury's accretion zone were probably similar to highly unequilibrated, anhydrous, interstellar organic- and presolar grain-bearing chondritic, porous interplanetary dust particles (C-IDPs). Chemical systems enriched in an assumed C-IDP composition dust produce condensates (solid+liquid assemblages in equilibrium with vapor) with super-chondritic atomic Fe/Si ratios at high temperatures, approaching 50% of that estimated for bulk Mercury. Sulfur behaves as a refractory element, but at lower temperatures, in these chemical systems. Stable minerals are FeO-poor, and include CaS and MgS, species found in enstatite chondrites. Disk gradients in volatile compositions of planetary and asteroidal precursors can explain Mercury's anomalous composition, as well as enstatite chondrite and aubrite parent body compositions. This model predicts high sulfur content, and very low FeO content of Mercury's surface rocks. 相似文献
