A high-resolution multichannel seismic reflection river profiling campaign was completed in July 2002 in the southern Upper Rhine graben (URG), along the River Rhine. Preliminary results show apparent Quaternary vertical slip rates, on intra-graben faults that are relatively slow, of the order of a few thousandths to a few hundredths of mm/yr. Moreover, kinematical data from the Ludwigshafen area show decreasing vertical slip rates since the Middle Pleistocene and/or a migration of tectonic activity. While still preliminary, these data show inhomogeneous and relatively slow tectonic activity in the URG that could probably not alone have shaped the Quaternary graben morphology. Distinguishing the effects of climate on discharge in a tropical river highly impacted by large dams
Abstract The hydrological regime of a river is defined by variables or representative curves that in turn have characteristics related to fluctuations in flow rates resulting from climate variability. Distinguishing between the causes of streamflow variations, i.e. those resulting from human intervention in the watershed and those due to climate variability, is not trivial. To discriminate the alterations resulting from climate variation from those due to regulation by dams, a reference hydrological regime was established using the classification of events based on mean annual streamflow anomalies and inferred climatic conditions. The applicability of this approach was demonstrated by analysis of the streamflow duration curves. An assessment of the hydrological regime in the lower reaches of the São Francisco River, Brazil, after the implementation of hydropower plants showed that the operation of the dams has been responsible for 59% of the hydrological changes, while the climate (in driest conditions) has contributed to 41% of the total changes. Factor analysis of dissolution-resistant species of planktonic foraminifera in the >250 μm fraction of seabed and core samples from the tropical southeast Pacific yields five mappable varimax assemblages. The distribution of these assemblages in core tops is more related to the subsurface thermal structure than to the surface temperature. A transfer function relating the assemblages in core tops to the temperature at 200 m is applied to five cores. Cycles of estimated temperature in three cores are approximately in phase with climatic cycles in Atlantic cores spanning the past 200,000 yr, and display amplitudes on the order of 5°C. Two zones of increased calcium carbonate dissolution occur in these three cores. These zones occur in the transition from interglacial to glacial intervals. Temperature variations inferred are ascribed to fluctuations of the main thermocline, and the inference is made that during cold intervals the thermocline was displaced upward as the central water mass was areally diminished. A model of circulation dynamics suggests that such areal diminution would be associated with an intensified circulation. No significant fluctuations in the estimated 200 m temperature are inferred for a core in the Galápagos area during the last glacial, but a pronounced peak of high-latitude species Globorotalia inflata does occur. The Cerrado biome is the second largest in Brazil, but the evolution of the Cerrado during the late Quaternary is not yet fully known. This study identifies paleoenvironmental changes during the last 23 000 years, based on a tropical mountain peatland record, in the Serra do Espinhaço Meridional in central-eastern Brazil. A multi-proxy approach was used that involved palynological analysis, stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N), geochemistry, radiocarbon dating and multivariate statistics derived from a peatland core from Rio Preto (Minas Gerais state). The study reveals a very humid and cold climate during the late Pleistocene, with an increase in temperature and decrease in humidity at the Pleistocene–Holocene transition. During this period there was strong instability in the landscape (episodes of erosion). At the beginning of the Holocene there was a reduction in humidity with greater landscape stability. The current sub-humid climatic conditions seem to have been established in the mid-/late Holocene, with periods of landscape instability. Our findings agree with other Cerrado records that contradict previously established hypotheses, such as the Amazonian Refuge and the Pleistocene Arc. 相似文献
