A newly developed marine electromagnetic (E-M) system was used to create apparent porosity maps of the uppermost 20 m of sediments on the seafloor. Measurements of electrical conductivity were interpreted to give the porosity of the bottom sediments and underlying units. The data were collected continuously in a surveying mode using two receivers at different spacings to improve the resolution of porosity as a function of depth. The variations in apparent porosity over the area correlate well with information obtained from cores and acoustic profiles.

Acoustic profiles indicated the presence of biogenic gas in the central region of the survey area. The absence of distinct changes in apparent porosity over regions of gas allows us to conclude that the concentration of gas trapped within the Queen Charlotte muds does not exceed about 4% of the sediment by volume if we assume that the gas displaces fluid in the sediment.

A buried, lower porosity layer was detected, its position reflecting changes in the depth to the glaciomarine layer. Mapped variations in apparent porosity are well correlated with features on the acoustic record. This illustrates the system's ability to obtain continuous profiles of apparent porosity over seafloor features. The marine E-M survey provided rapid areal coverage, and, combined with the acoustic profiles, information on the porosity of deeper units.  相似文献

Osmium isotope ratios for two types of platinum group mineral (PGM) nuggets of eluvial (residual) origin, associated with the Freetown Layered Gabbro Complex, were determined in-situ using an ion microprobe. The values for erlichmanite nuggets are 1.08. Those for PGM inclusions in Pt–Fe alloy nuggets are higher, ranging from 1.2 to 2.1. Ratios of187Os/186Os vary between the nuggets, but they are consistent within individual nuggest. The data suggest early formation of the erlichmanite nuggets, prior to a postulated substantial contribution of crustal Os. The Pt–Fe alloy nuggets, on the other hand, were formed later in a residual melt which was contaminated by crustal Os due to the assimilation (<10%) or the gaseous/fluid transport of Os from Archaean host rocks into the magma. The lack of systematic mineralogical and chemical changes of the Complex and extensive granulitization in the adjacent host rocks and xenoliths may favor the latter process.The lack of high187Os/186Os ratios, consistent187Os/186Os values within individual nuggets and their textures and mineralogy suggest that the studied PGM nuggets were not formed during lateritization or in low-temperature depositional environments.  相似文献

Within the Kyoto Protocol, countries have significant latitude to define a forest. The most important parameter affecting area designated as forest is the minimum crown density which can be set between 10 and 30 percent. The choice will have implications for the amount of land available in a country for afforestation and reforestation (A/R) activities within the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). In this paper, we used GIS analysis to look at four case studies from countries involved in the EU-funded ENCOFOR project: Bolivia, Ecuador, Uganda and Kenya. We also looked at the effects of other factors that would exclude land from eligibility for A/R projects. A low threshold of 10 percent crown cover resulted in exclusion of 70 to 90 percent of the land area of all countries except Kenya, which differed from the other countries by its large dryland areas. Much less area was excluded when higher thresholds were used. The spatial analyses showed not only the effects of the choice of the crown cover criterion, but also where the land was available for CDM activities within each country at different thresholds. This is the first time that the effect of the crown cover element of the Kyoto forest definition on land availability and distribution for CDM A/R activities has been quantified. While there are a number of reasons to choose different thresholds, this analysis suggests that countries that are considering using CDM finance for rural development might want to select the higher minimum threshold for crown cover in order to maximize their participation and flexibility.  相似文献

Estimating vertical velocity in the oceanic upper layers is a key issue for understanding ocean dynamics and the transport of biogeochemical elements. This paper aims to identify the physical sources of vertical velocity associated with sub-mesoscale dynamics (fronts, eddies) and mixed-layer depth (MLD) structures, using (a) an ocean adaptation of the generalized Q-vector form of the ω-equation deduced from a primitive equation system which takes into account the turbulent buoyancy and momentum fluxes and (b) an application of this diagnostic method for an ocean simulation of the Programme Océan Multidisciplinaire Méso Echelle (POMME) field experiment in the North-Eastern Atlantic. The approach indicates that w-sources can play a significant role in the ocean dynamics and strongly depend on the dynamical structure (anticyclonic eddy, front, MLD, etc.). Our results stress the important contribution of the ageostrophic forcing, even under quasi-geostrophic conditions. The turbulent w-forcing was split into two components associated with the spatial variability of (a) the buoyancy and momentum (Ekman pumping) surface fluxes and (b) the MLD. Process (b) represents the trapping of the buoyancy and momentum surface energy into the MLD structure and is identified as an atmosphere/oceanic mixed-layer coupling. The momentum-trapping process is 10 to 100 times stronger than the Ekman pumping and is at least 1,000 times stronger than the buoyancy w-sources. When this decomposition is applied to a filamentary mixed-layer structure simulated during the POMME experiment, we find that the associated vertical velocity is created by trapping the surface wind-stress energy into this structure and not by Ekman pumping.  相似文献

The Anfeg batholith (or composite laccolith) occupies a large surface (2000 km2) at the northern tip of the Laouni terrane, just south of Tamanrasset in Hoggar. It is granodioritic to granitic in composition and comprises abundant enclaves that are either mafic microgranular enclaves (MME) or gneissic xenoliths. It intruded an Eburnian (≈2 Ga) high-grade basement belonging to the LATEA metacraton at approximately 608 Ma (recalculated from the U–Pb dating of [Tectonics 5 (1986) 955]) and cooled at approximately 4 kbar, with a temperature of about 750 °C. This emplacement occurred mainly along subhorizontal thrust planes related to Pan-African subvertical mega-shear zones close to the attachment zone of a strike-slip partitioned transpression system. Although affected by some LILE mobility, the Anfeg batholith can be ascribed to a high-K calc-alkaline suite but characterized by low heavy REE contents and high LREE/HREE ratios. The MME belong to the Anfeg magmatic trend while some xenoliths belong to Neoproterozoic island arc rocks.The Anfeg batholith defines a Nd–Sr isotopic initial ratios trend (Nd/(87Sr/86Sr)i from −2.8/0.7068 to −11.8/0.7111) pointing to a mixing between a depleted mantle and an old Rb-depleted granulitic lower crust. Both sources have been identified within LATEA and elsewhere in the Tuareg shield (Nd/87Sr/86Sr)i of +6.2/0.7028 for the depleted mantle, −22/0.708 for the old lower crust.The model proposed relates the above geochemical features to a lithospheric delamination along the subvertical mega-shear zones that dissected the rigid LATEA former passive margin without major crustal thickening (metacratonization) during the general northward tectonic escape of the Tuareg terranes, a consequence of the collision with the West African craton. This delamination allowed the uprise of the asthenosphere. In turn, this induced the melting of the asthenosphere by adiabatic pressure release and of the old felsic and mafic lower crust due to the high heat flow. A gradient in the mantle/crust ratio within the source of the Pan-African magmatism is observed in LATEA from the northeast (Egéré-Aleksod terrane) where rare plutons are rooted within the Archaean/Eburnian basement to the southwest (Laouni terrane) where abundant batholiths, including Anfeg, have a mixed signature. Some mantle melts with only slight crustal contamination (Laouni troctolitic layered intrusions) are even present. This suggests that the southern boundary of LATEA microcontinent is not far south of the Tuareg shield.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the possible influence of an earthquake on the resistivity distribution in a fault zone. We collected resistivity image profiles across a proposed fault trace prior to the 7.3 magnitude 1999 shallow earthquake in the Chi-Chi area of Taiwan. Significant positive resistivity anomalies were observed in the hanging wall after the earthquake. However, there were negligible resistivity changes in the footwall. From an examination of geoelectric phenomena and surface rupture in the fault zone, it is believed that geoelectric anomalies are associated with abrupt displacement along the active Chelungpu fault. This result indicates a potential for resistivity methods to provide a basis for the monitoring of an active fault.  相似文献

A scheme for the representation of the vertical eddy fluxes of heat, momentum and water vapour in a forecast model is presented. An important feature of the scheme is the dependence of the diffusion coefficients on the static stability of the atmosphere. Two tests are presented, using the scheme in a one-dimensional model: the simulation of the diurnal cycle, and the transformation of a polar air mass moving over the warm sea.  相似文献

This research paper concerns the frozen state properties of several silty soils encountered in the construction of a large LNG storage cavern near Carlstadt, New Jersey.

The creep and compression strengths were correlated with both field and laboratory-measured mechanical properties. These cryogenic mechanical properties were related to ice lens structures, sizes and occurrences, and to heat flow and geological structure effects. Three distinct and separate types of ice lenses were identified. These cryogenic ground data pertain to the prediction of the engineering properties of frozen earth for large structures. Sample size effect problems were investigated, this in relationship to the number and size and orientations of the ice lenses present.  相似文献

The spatial distribution and mineralogical association of uranium in 30 samples of a 1,000 meter core from the Redstone (NH) Quarry were examined with fission track techniques, backscattered electron imaging, and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry with the following results for the Conway and Mount Osceola granites: (1) Uranium occurs in microcracks sealed with siderite and/or with Ca+ RE fluorocarbonate minerals; the uranium contents of siderite and the RE fluorocarbonates are 1 to 30 ppm and 500–1,500 ppm, respectively. (2) Siderite and to a lesser extent RE fluorocarbonate minerals occur as replacement minerals of amphibole and biotite; the RE fluorocarbonates are the main alteration minerals of allanite. (3) The degree of alteration and the extent of uranium redistribution are greater in samples with major uraniferous microcracks. (4) The contents of Ca and Mn are approximately constant for siderite in sealed cracks throughout the Conway and Mount Osceola granites for the entire section penetrated by the corehole, approximately 700 meters. — From these observations, we conclude that an extensive set of fractures throughout a significant volume of the Mount Osceola and Conway granties were the conduits through which hydrothermal fluids containing CO2, uranium, and REs circulated. Microcracks facilitated fluid-rock interactions resulting in alteration and uranium redistribution. Certain primary uraniferous accessory minerals, i.e., allanite and ilmenorutile may have been the source for at least part of the uranium and REs that now occur in secondary minerals in these granites.  相似文献
