We have studied the possible synthesis of organic molecules by the absorption of galactic cosmic rays in an N2CH4H2 Titan model atmosphere. The cosmic-ray-induced ionization results in peak electron densities of 2 × 103 cm?3, with NH4+, C3H9+, and C4H9+ being among the important positive ions. Details of the ion and neutral chemistry relevant to the production of organic molecules are discussed. The potential importance of N(2D) reactions with CH4 and H2 is also demonstrated. Although the integrated production rate of organic matter due to the absorption of the cosmic ray cascade is much less than that by solar ultraviolet radiation, the production of nitrogen-bearing organic molecules by cosmic rays may be greater.  相似文献

As coastal catchment land use intensifies, estuaries receive increased nutrient and sediment loads, resulting in habitats that are dominated by muddy organic-rich sediments. Increased mud (i.e. silt-clay (particles <?63 μm)) content has been associated with negative effects on soft sediment biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, but the simultaneous impact of nutrient enrichment on ecosystem response is unclear. Nutrient recycling and denitrification in estuarine soft sediments represent important ecosystem functions regenerating nutrients for primary producers and regulating the ability to remove excess terrestrially derived nitrogen. To test the effect of sedimentary environment on ecosystem resilience to nutrient perturbation, we experimentally enriched sediments with slow release fertiliser across an intertidal sedimentary gradient (0–24% mud content). The enrichment successfully elevated pore water ammonium concentrations (median 36?×?control) to levels representative of enriched estuaries. Findings show that the sedimentary environment can influence ecosystem function response to nutrient stress. In particular, denitrification enzyme activity was suppressed by nutrient enrichment, but the effect was greater as sediment mud content increased. Furthermore, compared with sandy sediments, sediments with high mud content may restrict nutrient processing (release, uptake or transformation of organic nutrients by the benthos) facilitating ecosystem shifts toward eutrophication. These results show the value of investigating the impacts of stressors in different environmental settings and demonstrate that land use practices that increase the proportion of muddy habitats in estuaries may reduce denitrification which in turn may reduce ecosystem resilience to eutrophication.  相似文献

The ongoing regression of sea ice cover is expected to significantly affect the fate of organic carbon over the Arctic continental shelves. Long-term moored sediment traps were deployed in 2005–2006 in the Beaufort Sea, Northern Baffin Bay and the Laptev Sea to compare the annual variability of POC fluxes and to evaluate the factors regulating the annual cycle of carbon export over these continental shelves. Annual POC fluxes at 200 m ranged from 1.6 to 5.9 g C m−2 yr−1 with the highest export in Northern Baffin Bay and the lowest export over the Mackenzie Shelf in the Beaufort Sea. Each annual cycle exhibited an increase in POC export a few weeks before, during, or immediately following sea ice melt, but showed different patterns over the remainder of the cycle. Enhanced primary production, discharge of the Lena River, and resuspension events contributed to periods of elevated POC export over the Laptev Sea slope. High POC fluxes in Northern Baffin Bay reflected periods of elevated primary production in the North Water polynya. In the Beaufort Sea sediment resuspension contributed to most of the large export events. Our results suggest that the outer shelf of the Laptev Sea will likely sustain the largest increase in POC export in the next few years due to the large reduction in ice cover and the possible increase in the Lena River discharge. The large differences in forcing among the regions investigated reinforce the importance of monitoring POC fluxes in the different oceanographic regimes that characterize the Arctic shelves to assess the response of the Arctic Ocean carbon cycle to interannual variability and climate change.  相似文献

The sublethal and lethal effects of chlorine produced oxidants (CPO) on juveniles of the estuarine teleost,Leiostomus xanthurus, were investigated in flowing water tests conducted at 30 ±1°C and 26 to 31‰ salinity. Short-term LT50 tests were conducted at two nominal concentrations of NaOCl, 1.0 and 1.4 mg/l (respective measured CPO concentrations 0.09 and 0.12 mg/l) which were sublethal in 2,880 minute exposures; and three nominal concentrations, 1.6, 1.8 and 3.2 mg/l NaOCl (respective measured CPO concentrations 0.13, 0.20 and 0.37 mg/l) which were acutely toxic. Opercular ventilation rates in exposed spot were much higher than in control fish, but returned to rates only slightly above those of controls during the latter portion of the 2,880 minute exposure to the two sublethal CPO concentrations. Opercular rates at the three acutely toxic CPO concentrations remained much higher than control rates until the exposed fish died. Blood pH after 2,880 minutes of exposure to the sublethal concentrations of CPO; or at the respective estimated LT50 for lethal concentrations, showed significant decreases ( \(\bar X\) as low as 6.84) compared to controls \((\bar X 7.35)\) . No significant changes in the % methemoglobin were observed. Oxygen uptake by spot was depressed at all of the measured concentrations of CPO tested. Histopathological examination showed that gill respiratory epithelial tissues sloughed away from the underlying pillar cells. Complete denudation of circulatory tissues and hemangiectic secondary lamellae were observed in gill tissues from fish exposed to the highest CPO concentration of 0.37 mg/l.  相似文献

Uncertainty quantification for subsurface flow problems is typically accomplished through model-based inversion procedures in which multiple posterior (history-matched) geological models are generated and used for flow predictions. These procedures can be demanding computationally, however, and it is not always straightforward to maintain geological realism in the resulting history-matched models. In some applications, it is the flow predictions themselves (and the uncertainty associated with these predictions), rather than the posterior geological models, that are of primary interest. This is the motivation for the data-space inversion (DSI) procedure developed in this paper. In the DSI approach, an ensemble of prior model realizations, honoring prior geostatistical information and hard data at wells, are generated and then (flow) simulated. The resulting production data are assembled into data vectors that represent prior ‘realizations’ in the data space. Pattern-based mapping operations and principal component analysis are applied to transform non-Gaussian data variables into lower-dimensional variables that are closer to multivariate Gaussian. The data-space inversion is posed within a Bayesian framework, and a data-space randomized maximum likelihood method is introduced to sample the conditional distribution of data variables given observed data. Extensive numerical results are presented for two example cases involving oil–water flow in a bimodal channelized system and oil–water–gas flow in a Gaussian permeability system. For both cases, DSI results for uncertainty quantification (e.g., P10, P50, P90 posterior predictions) are compared with those obtained from a strict rejection sampling (RS) procedure. Close agreement between the DSI and RS results is consistently achieved, even when the (synthetic) true data to be matched fall near the edge of the prior distribution. Computational savings using DSI are very substantial in that RS requires \(O(10^5\)\(10^6)\) flow simulations, in contrast to 500 for DSI, for the cases considered.  相似文献

The high topographic complexity of the Alpine region is the origin of important climate differences that characterise the different areas of the Alps. These differences might have had a strong influence on vegetation and on migrations of human populations in the past. Based on an improved database containing about 3000 modern pollen samples, the standard “Modern Analogue Technique” has been applied to five pollen sequences from the subalpine belt of the South-western Italian Alps (Laghi dell’Orgials, 2240 m, Lago delle Fate, 2130 m, Torbiera del Biecai, 1920 m, Rifugio Mondovì, 1760 m, Pian Marchisio, 1624 m) to provide quantitative climate estimates for the Lateglacial and Holocene periods. Consistent climate trends are reconstructed for the different sequences. Sites recorded in detail the climate variations when they were located at the limit of two ecotones. Sites above the tree line recorded lower temperature values and less important variations. Climate was cold and dry during the Oldest and Younger Dryas and close to present-day values during the Bølling/Allerød interstadial. At the beginning of the Holocene, climate changed to warmer and moister conditions; a high number of climate fluctuations are recorded at several sites. A climate optimum is recorded in the Atlantic period, which caused a development of fir above its present-day altitudinal distribution. Climatic differences recorded at the various sites are discussed taking into account the limits of the method.  相似文献

Piping flow networks have often been identified in hydrogeological field studies of gravelly soil slopes in the southern part of China. The present experimental studies have shown that under long-term groundwater seepage, piping flow networks gradually develop in the slope. Factors affecting the development of flow pipe seepage network included the grain size distribution, the degree of soil compaction, and soil depth. Piping seepage networks favorably form if the content of the gravel was high, the soil cohesion was low, the degree of the soil compaction was low, or the soil depth was shallow. Due to the enhanced permeability associated with the presence of flow pipe seepage network in gravelly soil slopes, groundwater can be effectively drained away. This can beneficially prevent the rise of groundwater level in the slope during raining seasons, hence reducing pore water pressure along the potential failure surface and increasing slope stability. Once the flow pipe seepage network was disturbed or damaged, the water level in the upper portion of the slope experienced a great rise, hence reducing the slope stability. Therefore, slope toe excavation and excessive loading at the slope crest should be avoided for slopes with well-developed flow pipe seepage network in order to preserve it.  相似文献
