An integrated study has been carried out to elucidate the distribution and occurrence of arsenic in selected groundwater samples in the area of Sherajdikhan, Bangladesh. Arsenic and other parameters (T, pH, EC, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl, NO3 , SO4 2−, HCO3 , PO4 3−, Fe, Mn and DOC) have been measured in groundwater samples collected from shallow/deep tube wells at different depths. Hydrogeochemical data suggest that the groundwaters are generally Ca–Mg–HCO3 and Mg–Ca–HCO3 types with bicarbonate (HCO3 ) as the dominant anion, though the other type of water has also been observed. Dissolved arsenic in groundwater ranged from 0.006 to 0.461 mg/l, with 69% groundwater samples exceeded the Bangladesh limit for safe drinking water (0.05 mg/l). Correlation and principal component analysis have been performed to find out possible relationships among the examined parameters in groundwater. Low concentrations of NO3 and SO4 2−, and high concentrations of DOC, HCO3 and PO4 3− indicate the reducing condition of subsurface aquifer where sediments are deposited with abundant organic matter. Distinct relationship of As with Fe and Mn, and strong correlation with DOC suggests that the biodegradation of organic matter along with reductive dissolution of Fe–Mn oxyhydroxides has being considered the dominant process to release As in the aquifers studied herein.  相似文献

Landsat enhanced thematic mapper imagery (ETM) of 2002 and aerial photography of 1955, combined with published charts and field observations were used to interpret coastal changes in the zone between Kitchener drain and Damietta spit in the northeastern Nile delta, previously recognized as a vulnerable zone to the effects of any sea level rise resulting from global warming. The interpretation resulted in recognition of several changes in nine identified geomorphological land types: beach and coastal flat, coastal dunes, agricultural deltaic land, sabkhas, fish farms, Manzala lagoon, saltpans, marshes and urban centers. Reclamation of vast areas of the coastal dunes and of Manzala lagoon added about 420 km2 to the agricultural deltaic land. About 48 km2 of backshore flats, marshes, salt pans and Manzala lagoon have been converted to productive fish farms. The main urban centers have expanded; nearly 12.1 km2 have been added to their areas, and new urban centers (Damietta harbor and the New Damietta city) with total area reach of ~35.3 km2 have been constructed at the expense of vast areas of Manzala lagoon, coastal dunes, and backshore flats. As a consequence of human activities, the size of Manzala lagoon has been reduced to more than 65%. Shoreline changes have been determined from beach profile survey (1990–2000), and comparison of 1955 aerial photographs and ETM satellite image of 2002 reveal alongshore patterns of erosion versus accretion. The short-term rate of shoreline retreat (1990–2000) has increased in the downdrift side of Damietta harbor (≃14 m/year), whereas areas of accretion exist within the embayment of Gamasa and in the shadow of Ras El Bar detached breakwaters system, with a maximum shoreline advance of ~15 m/year. A sandy spit, 12 km long, has developed southeast of Damietta promontory. These erosion/accretion patterns denote the natural processes of wave-induced longshore currents and sediment transport, in addition, the impact of man-made coastal protection structures.  相似文献

This paper compares the pattern of historical Eastern Nile Delta branches, delineated by geoelectric resistivity investigation, with the path of the Nile canyon of Messinian time revealed in seismic reflection. A close correlation is evident between the Late Quaternary Nile River channels and the Messinian canyons (wadies) in the eastern Nile Delta. This indicates that the Messinian canyons were a persistent topographic (or geomorphic) feature until historical branches. The results may also have implications for long-term patterns of subsidence in the delta area.  相似文献

Residue of methanolic extract of Egyptian Jatropha curcas contains bioactive substances such as phenolic compounds, which succeeded to be used as natural antioxidants for the protection of oils and their corresponding biodiesel against oxidative deterioration. In the present work, the residue of Jatropha roots were extracted with methanol and resulting residues, were investigated regarding their content of total phenolic compounds by folin-Cioalteau assay. Further, the antioxidant activities of the extracts were characterized by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical method and proved remarkable results. Oxidation stability of Jatropha oil, used fried oil and olive oil and their corresponding biodiesel obtained by conventional transesterification were tested using thermal oxidation. Natural antioxidants such as (α-trocopherol), synthetic antioxidants as butylated hydroxytoluene and natural Jatropha root extract were used in the present study in comparison to investigate their addition effect on the oxidative stability of oils and their corresponding biodiesel. In the rapied thermal treatment test, results showed that addition of butylated hydroxytoluene 0.25 % was able to stabilize Jatropha oil 6 h, but poorly stabiliz biodiesel. Addition of 0.25 % α-trocopherol to Jatropha oil showed less oxidation stability after 2 h thermal treatment. Crude root extract addition at 0.25% to Jatropha oil showed good stability up to 4 h thermal treatment while addition of root extract at 0.25 % to biodiesel showed better stability up to 6 h thermal treatment. Besides addition of 220 ppm crude root extract to biodiesel was enough sufficient to occure oxidative stabilization. Also Jatropha root residue addition at 400 ppm was effective antioxidant for fresh Jatropha oil.  相似文献

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a non-destructive method which, over the past 10 years, has been successfully used not only to estimate the water content of soil, but also to detect and monitor the infiltration of pollutants on sites contaminated by light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPL). We represented a model water table aquifer (72 cm depth) by injecting water into a sandbox that also contains several buried objects. The GPR measurements were carried out with shielded antennae of 900 and 1200 MHz, respectively, for common mid point (CMP) and constant offset (CO) profiles. We extended the work reported by Loeffler and Bano by injecting 100 L of diesel fuel (LNAPL) from the top of the sandbox. We used the same acquisition procedure and the same profile configuration as before fuel injection. The GPR data acquired on the polluted sand did not show any clear reflections from the plume pollution; nevertheless, travel times are very strongly affected by the presence of the fuel and the main changes are on the velocity anomalies. We can notice that the reflection from the bottom of the sandbox, which is recorded at a constant time when no fuel is present, is deformed by the pollution. The area close to the fuel injection point is characterized by a higher velocity than the area situated further away. The area farther away from the injection point shows a low velocity anomaly which indicates an increase in travel time. It seems that pore water has been replaced by fuel as a result of a lateral flow. We also use finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) numerical GPR modelling in combination with dielectric property mixing models to estimate the volume and the physical characteristics of the contaminated sand.  相似文献

Seismic and electrical resistivity tomography allow subsurface characterization from acoustic P-waves (Vp), shear S-waves (Vs) velocities, and electrical resistivity (ρ). Both geophysical methods were used to monitor water flow during a controlled rainfall experiment on a clay-shale hillslope located in the Laval catchment at Draix (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France). The objectives of the rainfall experiment were to analyse the water infiltration processes and identify possible water pathways by combining multi-method observations. The seismic data provide information on fissure density and the electrical resistivity data provide information on soil water content within the hillslope. Changes of the Vp and electrical resistivity fields with time show some similar pattern. To go further in the analysis of the water flow a geophysical data fusion strategy based on fuzzy set theory is applied. The computed fuzzy cross-sections based on expert hypotheses show the possibility for the material to be saturated during the rainfall experiment. The data fusion process is repeated in time for each acquisition set. The relative difference between the obtained fuzzy cross-sections is calculated and reveals possible locations where water may be transferred within the hillslope.  相似文献

Within individual plutons, the trace element concentrations in S-type granites generally increase with maficity (total iron and magnesium content and expressed as atomic Fe + Mg in this study); the degree of variability in trace element concentration also expands markedly with the same parameter. The strongly peraluminous, high-level S-type granites of the Peninsular Pluton (Cape Granite Suite, South Africa) are the product of biotite incongruent melting of a metasedimentary source near the base of the crust. Leucogranites within the suite represent close to pure melts from the anatectic source and more mafic varieties represent mixtures of melt and peritectic garnet and ilmenite. Trace elements such as Rb, Ba, Sr and Eu, that are concentrated in reactant minerals in the melting process, show considerable scatter within the granites. This is interpreted to reflect compositional variation in the source. In contrast, elements such as LREE, Zr and Hf, which are concentrated within refractory accessory phases (zircon and monazite), show well-defined negative correlations with increasing SiO2 and increase linearly with increasing maficity. This is interpreted to reflect coupled co-entrainment of accessory minerals and peritectic phases to the melt: leucocratic rocks cannot have evolved from the more mafic compositions in the suite by a process of fractional crystallisation because in this case they would have inherited the zircon-saturated character of this hypothetical earlier magma. Trace element behaviour of granites from the Peninsular Pluton has been modelled via both equilibrium and disequilibrium trace element melting. In the disequilibrium case, melts are modelled as leaving the source with variable proportions of entrained peritectic phases and accessory minerals, but before the melt has dissolved any accessory minerals. Thus, the trace element signature of the melt is largely inherited from the reactants in the melting reaction, with no contribution from zircon and monazite dissolution. In the equilibrium case, melt leaves the source with entrained crystals, after reaching zircon and monazite saturation. A significant proportion of the rocks of the Peninsular Pluton have trace element concentrations below those predicted by zircon and monazite saturation. In the case of the most leucocratic rocks all compositions are zircon undersaturated; whilst the majority of the most mafic compositions are zircon oversaturated. However, in both cases, zircon is commonly xenocrystic. Thus, the leucocratic rocks represent close to pure melts, which escaped their sources rapidly enough that some very closely match the trace element disequilibrium melting model applied in this study. Zircon dissolution rates allow the residency time for the melt in the source to be conservatively estimated at less than 500 years.  相似文献

This paper reports ReaxFF MD simulation results on pyrolysis of a molecular model of the algaenan Botryococcus braunii race L biopolymer, specifically, ReaxFF predictions on the pyrolysis of prototypical chemical structures involving aliphatic chain esters and aldehydes. These preliminary computational experiments are then used to analyze the thermal cracking process within algaenan race L biopolymers. The simulations indicate that the thermal decomposition of the algaenan biopolymer is initiated by the cleavage of a C–O bond in the ester group, followed by the release of carbon dioxide. We also observe a significant, strongly temperature dependent, release of ethylene. This degradation mechanism leads to products similar to those observed in pyrolysis experiments, validating this computational approach.  相似文献

We have developed a theoretical approach for evaluating the maturation of kerogen-like material, involving molecular dynamic reactive modelling with a reactive force field to simulate thermal stress. Morwell Brown Coal was selected to study the thermal evolution of terrestrial organic matter (OM). To achieve this, a structural model is first constructed on the basis of literature models and analytical characterization of our samples using modern 1and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Then, artificial maturation of the coal is performed at low conversion in order to obtain quantitative and qualitative detailed evidence for the structural evolution of the kerogen upon maturation. The chemical changes include defunctionalization of carboxyl, carbonyl and methoxy functional groups, coupled with an increase in cross linking in the residual matured kerogen. Gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons, essentially CH4, C4H8 and C14+ hydrocarbons, are generated in low amount, merely via cleavage of the lignin side chain.  相似文献

The thermal reactivity of organic matter in source rocks is usually kinetically represented by a set of parallel and independent first order reactions. The approach assumes that only defunctionalisation reactions take place upon thermal decomposition, regardless of the chemical nature of kerogen. We have developed a new method for evaluating maturation pathways for an important kerogen-forming geopolymer, algaenan from the alga Botryococcus braunii (B. braunii), involving molecular dynamic reactive modelling based on quantum mechanics to reproduce maturation. To achieve this, a structural model is first constructed on the basis of models from the literature and analytical characterization of our samples using modern 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and elemental analysis (EA). Then, thermal decomposition of the algaenan is performed at low conversion in order to describe the initial transformations analytically. In an additional step, the observed chemical changes are quantitatively and qualitatively compared to simulated maturation from the molecular models. From this simulated maturation detailed reaction schemes are extracted for primary cracking mechanisms.  相似文献
