The paper discusses the land damage assessment and change detection analysis with reference to a mineral bearing zone in Manjhi,
Manuni and Churan valleys. The area is located in environmentally sensitive and fragile region of Himalaya and constitutes
of nearly 400 small-scale mines of slate, which were operative since last one hundred years and are stopped by court of law
since 1995 on account of environment deterioration. The status of land degradation has been studied using IRS-1B satellite
data of 1988,1992 and 1995. The geo-coded data on 1:50,000 scale has been interpreted and an increase in land degradation

The review of study site have revealed the change in vegetation cover of Sal Dense to Sal Medium and Sal Open in 6 forest
Mosaics owing to biotic and abiotic conditions prevailing in the specific areas. Analysis carried out using thematic map derived
from aerial photograph of 1976 and satellite data of IRS 1C LISS III False Colour Composite (FCC) of March 1999 revealed the
cause for change in forest density classes. Deforestation, encroachment and agriculture have been identified as the underlying
causes, which have affected some specific locations to a marked extent. There has been a progressive and remarkable change
among vegetation classes from 1976 to 1999. It is evident from forest type and density map that Sal density has significantly
reduced from Sal Dense 65.61 % in 1976 to Sal Dense 11.12% in the year 1999 followed by Sal Open 11.18 % and Sal Medium 18.24

The Himalayas has one of the largest concentrations of glaciers outside the Polar Regions. Various reports suggest that significant number of mountain glaciers is shrinking due to climatic variations. Monitoring of these glaciers is important to assess future availability of water resources in the Himalayan region. However, Himalayan glaciers are normally difficult to monitor due to the rugged, mountainous terrain. Therefore, images of Indian Remote Sensing Satellite were used to monitor glaciers in the Baspa basin. Investigations have shown the presence of 30 glaciers in the basin, with areal extent of 167 km2. Out of these, 19 glaciers, with areal extent of 140 km2 were selected to estimate retreat. Investigation suggests that almost all glaciers are retreating in the study basin and overall 19% deglaciation has been observed from 1962 to 2001. In general, altitude distribution appears to have significant influence on glacial retreat. Glaciers located around 5000 m altitude range are showing 24% loss as compared to 14% by glaciers located in altitude range higher than 5400 m. In addition, mean altitude of glacier terminus is shifted upward by 88 m, i.e. from 4482 to 4570 m in last 39 years. The glacial volumes were estimated using regression relationship between area and depth. The investigations have suggested that 19.10 km3 of glacial water stored in the 19 glaciers in 1962, has been reduced to 14.71 km3 in 2001, respectively, an overall loss of 23 percent in a period between 1962 and 2001. These investigations suggest that all glaciers in the Baspa Basin are reducing and in long term, such reducing trend can create scarcity of water in the region. 相似文献

Summary ?Using the data of 6 automatic heat balance observation (AWS) stations and a data set of 52 surface observation stations over
the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (“the Plateau”) and surroundings, the horizontal distribution is studied of “apparent atmospheric heat sources” 〈Q
1〉 and of “apparent atmospheric moisture sinks” 〈Q
2〉. The AWS stations were established during the period May to August 1998 of the Tibetan Plateau Meteorological Experiment
(second TIPEX) by a cooperation of China and Japan. For this period the Plateau mean of 〈Q
1〉 is positive. Its value of 74 W/m2 is a little greater than a climate value and than values from MONEX and the first TIPEX in 1979, respectively. Also the corresponding
〈Q
2〉 is positive. Hence during that time the Plateau is a heat source and a moisture sink. A day-to-day change of 〈Q
1〉 and 〈Q
2〉 is more pronounced over the middle and east part of the Plateau than over the west part.
Diagnostics accompanied by numerical simulations are used to study the daily relationship between 〈Q
1〉 over the Plateau and the weather over China and Asia for this summer. The results suggest that 〈Q
1〉 may affect precipitation over northern China and position of the west Pacific subtropical high. Abnormal southward retreat
of this Pacific high seems to have caused the second flood over the middle and lower Yangtse river basin in July.

Summary ?High-frequency temperature variability was investigated in the temperature time series measured at Prague-Sporilov (Czech
Republic) between 1994–2001. The calculations were performed for time series of surface air temperature averaged for 6-hour
intervals. Variability was detected by the method of absolute difference of temperature anomalies between two adjacent discrete
time periods. The results indicated a frequency dependence of variability. For 24-hour intervals the variability exhibits
an irregular character and decreases with time in the eight-year observation period. Variability time series calculated for
the 6-hour intervals did not reveal any significant trend, however, apparent quasi-seasonal oscillations exist. A significant
correlation between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) activity and temperature variability can be observed. Higher NAO-index
values at all frequencies tend to be associated with higher variability.

Current climate models seem to underestimate the flux of solar energy absorbed by the global troposphere. All of these models are constrained with the assumption that cloud droplets consist of pure water. Here we demonstrate in a simple laboratory experiment that aromatic hydroxy-acids which are found in continental fine aerosol can react with hydroxyl radicals under typical conditions prevalent in cloud water influenced by biomass burning. The reactions yield colored organic species which do absorb solar radiation. We also suggest that the products of such reactions may be humic-like substances whose presence in continental aerosol has been confirmed but their source mechanisms are still much sought after. We also attempt to give a first order estimate of the enhancement of water absorption at a visible wavelength under atmospheric conditions. 相似文献

Two land surface schemes, SCAM and CSIRO9, were used to model the measured energy fluxes during the OASIS (Observations At Several Interacting Scales) field program. The measurements were taken at six sites along a 100 km rainfall gradient. Two types of simulations were conducted: (1) offline simulations forced with measured atmospheric input data at each of the six sites, and (2) regional simulations with the two land surface schemes coupled to the regional climate model DARLAM.The two land surface schemes employ two different canopy modelling concepts: in SCAM the vegetation is conceptually above the ground surface, while CSIRO9 employs the more commonly used `horizontally tiled' approach in which the vegetation cover is modelled by conceptually placing it beside bare ground. Both schemes utilize the same below-ground components (soil hydrological and thermal models) to reduce the comparison to canopy processes only. However, the ground heat flux, soil evaporation and evapotranspiration are parameterised by the two canopy treatments somewhat differently.Both canopy concepts reproduce the measured energy fluxes. SCAM has a slightly higher root-mean standard error in the model-measurement comparison for the ground heat flux. The mean surface radiative temperature simulated by SCAM is approximately 1K lower than in the CSIRO9 simulations. However, the soil and vegetation temperatures (which contribute to the radiative temperature) varied more in the CSIRO9 simulations. Surface ozone data from 25 Europeanlow-altitude sites and mountain sites located between79°N and 28°N were studied. The analysiscovered the time period March 1989–February 1993.Average summer and winter O3 concentrations inthe boundary layer over the continent gave rise togradients that were strongest in the north-west tosouth-east direction and west-east direction, respectively. WintertimeO3 ranged from 19 to 27 ppbover the continent, compared to about 32 ppb at thewestern border, while for summer the continentalO3 values ranged between 39 and 56 ppb and theoceanic mixing ratios were around 37 ppb. In the lowerfree troposphere average wintertime O3 mixingratios were around 38 ppb, with only an 8 ppbdifference between 28°N and 79°N. For summerthe average O3 levels decreased from about 55 ppbover Central Europe to 32 ppb at 79°N. Inaddition, O3 and Ox(= O3 + NO2)in polluted and clean air were compared. Summary The atmospheric concentrations of several primary species: NO, NO2, NOx, CO, SO2, reactive hydrocarbons (ROG) and other 15 atmospheric and meteorological variables have been measured at several locations in Córdoba city, Argentina since June 1995. The measurements are carried out using two mobile stations to cover several important areas of Córdoba. The objective of this work is to estimate the effects of meteorology and urban structure on the air quality levels for this city using simple statistics. We analyze the correlation between primary pollutants (CO and NOx) and site locations of the air quality monitoring stations (AQMS) during the whole 1995 field campaign. In this study we take the measured data for primary pollutants and group them by location and time of the year. The results of this work may be useful to forecast air pollution episodes. Also we can get indirect information about emissions and maybe identify source characteristics. Once the influences of topography, meteorology, and land use will be fully characterized, the existing monitoring data will be used to do air quality modeling analysis and to select monitoring locations. The use of mobile stations instead of stationary ones at this stage is justified because of limited funding. Therefore, it is a valid option to decide in the future the additional instrumentation required to characterize completely the atmospheric urban area.With 5 Figures 相似文献
