To investigate the relationship between solar activity and cosmic ray modulation, time series of the nucleonic flux and of solar plages, sunspots, centimeter radio noise, and the brightness of the white light corona at 1.1 and 1.5 solar radii from the center of Sun are cross-correlated. Data pertain to the years 1964–1967 during the ascending phase of the current solar cycle. The amplitudes and phases of correlation functions for filtered and unfiltered indices are discussed. The existence of a superior solar index for relating solar activity to long-term modulation is not yet demonstrated conclusively, and the time lag of modulation is too poorly determined to permit its use in estimating the radius of the modulation region.Presently at the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona 85721.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

It is suggested that large scale oscillations of the Sun give rise to the periodic fluctuations observed in the quiet Sun at radio wavelengths. These fluctuations would be most readily observed from regions where there is a large gradient of electron temperature with electron density, and are thus more readily observed at cm wavelengths than at millimetre wavelengths.  相似文献

The data of three-times repeated magnetic survey of the section of Lunokhod-2 route 1.5 km long are analyzed. The linear size of the regions of magnetic field anomalies disclosed is 200–300 m. The results of magnetic survey near the tectonic break of Straight Rille and near the south rim of crater Le Monnier were used for estimation of rock magnetization in situ. It is shown that mare basalts in south-east region of crater Le Monnier have oblique magnetization (at the angle ç30° to horizon). The magnitude of magnetization is × 5 × 10–5 G cm g–1. The south-east slope of the crater Le Monnier is magnetized roughly vertically, the upper limit of magnetization of the rocks of the rim is ç 1 × 10–5 G cm3 g–1. The results of an analysis of 160 magnetic field variations recorded by Lunokhod-2 indicate that the horizontal components of variations have nearly linear polarization. The principal axes of hodographs stretch in the direction north-west-south-east. Such a polarization of variations may be due to an increase of the thickness of the upper isolated layer under Mare Serenitatis.  相似文献

On the basis of ultrastructural, biochemical and genetic studies, bacteria and blue green algae (Kingdom Monera, all prokaryotes) differ unambiguously from the eukaryotic organisms (Fungi, plants sensu stricto) and protists or protoctists, (Copeland, 1956). The gap between eukaryotes and prokaryotes is recognized as the most profound evolutionary discontinuity in the living world. This gap is reflected in the fossil record. Fossil remains of Archaean and Proterozoic Aeons primarily consist of prokaryotes and the Phanerozoic is overwhelmingly characterized by fossils of the megascopic eukaryotic groups, both metazoa and metaphyta. Based on the morphological interpretation of microscopic objects structurally preserved in Precambrian cherts, the time of appearance of remains of eukaryotic organisms in the fossil record has been claimed to be as early as 2.7 · 109 years ago, (Ka?mierczak, 1976). Others suggest chronologies varying between 1.7 to 1.3 · 109 (Schopf et al., 1973) or a time approaching 1.3 · 109 years (Cloud, 1974).There is general agreement that many of the Ediacaran faunas, which have been dated at about 680 m.y. are fossils of megascopic soft-bodied invertebrate animals. Since all invertebrates are eukaryotic, the ca. 680 m.y. date for deposition of these animal assemblages may represent the earliest appearance of eukaryotic organisms. But the question remains as to whether there is definitive evidence for eukaryotic cells before this “benchmark” of the late Precambrian.An excellent discussion of this particular problem as especially relating to acritarchs extending from rocks of Upper Riphean through Vendian and into the basal Cambrian is presented in recent studies by Vidal (1974, 1976) in Late Precambrian microfossils from the Visingsö rocks of southern Sweden.Previous work on the laboratory silicification of wood and algal mat communities (Leo and Barghoorn, 1976) suggested that further analysis of “artificial fossils” might be of aid in the interpretation of fossil morphology toward the ultimate solution of this problem. Thus the procedure developed by one of us (ESB) for laboratory wood silicification was adapted to various smaller objects.By successive immersions of wet cellular aggregates, colonies of various organisms and abiotic organic microspheres in tetraethyl orthosilicate, silicified cells and structures are produced which bear an interesting resemblance to ancient chert-embedded microfossils. Our observation of these microorganisms and proteinoid microspheres silicified in the laboratory as well as of degrading microorganisms, both eukaryotic and prokaryotic, have led us to conclude that many, if not all, of the criteria for assessing fossil eukaryotic microorganisms are subject to serious criticism in interpretation. We studied a large variety of prokaryotic algae, some eukaryotic algae, fungi, protozoa, and abiotic organic microspheres stable at essentially neutral pH. In some cases, degradation and/or silicification systematically altered both size and appearances of microorganisms. By the use of monoalgal cultures of blue-green algae, features resembling nuclei, chloroplasts, tetrads, pyrenoids, and large cell size may be simulated. In many cases individual members of these cultures show so much variation that they may be mistaken as belonging to more than one species. The size ranges for silicified prokaryotic and eukaryotic algae overlap. Several prokaryotes routinely yielded spherical or filamentous structures that resembled large cells. Because of genuine large sizes (e.g., Prochloron), shrinkage, systematic alteration or congregation of unicells to form other structures we find sizes to be of very limited use in determining whether an organism of simple morphology was prokaryotic or eukaryotic. Although some “prebiotic proteinoid microspheres” (of Fox and Harada, 1960) are impossible to silicify with our laboratory methods, those stable at neutral pH (Hsu and Fox, 1976) formed spherical objects that morphologically resemble silicified algae or fungal spores. Many had internal structure. We conclude that even careful morphometric studies of fossil microorganisms are subject to many sources of misinterpretation. Even though it is a logical deduction that eukaryotic microorganisms evolved before Ediacaran time there is no compelling evidence for fossil eukaryotes prior to the late Precambrian metazoans.  相似文献

Transition from elliptic to hyperbolic orbits in the two-body problem with slowly decreasing mass is investigated by means of asymptotic approximations.Analytical results by Verhulst and Eckhaus are extended to construct approximate solutions for the true anomaly and the eccentricity of the osculating orbit if the initial conditions are nearly-parabolic. It becomes clear that the eccentricity will monotonously increase with time for all mass functions satisfying a Jeans-Eddington relation and even for a larger set of functions. To illustrate these results quantitatively we calculate the eccentricity as a function of time for Jeans-Eddington functionsn=0(1) 5 and 18 nearly-parabolic initial conditions to find that 93 out of 108 elliptic orbits become hyperbolic.  相似文献

A new technique for the calculation of cosmic ray daily variations, given the radial number density gradient, is introduced. The technique is applied to selected gradients to account for the average, enhanced and asymmetrical diurnal variations and different Forbush decrease profiles. A small semidiurnal variation is predicted and it is concluded that the profiles of Forbush decreases are strongly dependent on the radial approach velocity of the shock.  相似文献

The influence of short-wave turbulence on the expansion of a homogeneous and, on average, isotropic Universe was studied in Papers I–III. In the present paper we study the influence on the manner of expansion, for a complete spectrum of wavelengths, of scalar, tensor and vector perturbations. Ast»0, all waves become long (greater than the horizon); therefore, a knowledge of their influence on the averaged metric is required. It is shown that the long-wave modes of scalar and tensor perturbations which remain finite ast»0 deflect the metric for a homogeneous and, on average, isotropic Universe from the Friedmannian, giving it a form coinciding with the average quasi-isotropic solution of Lifshitz and Khalatnikov (1963). Ast»0 their contribution to the solution tends to zero. What remains to be determined is the contribution of those modes of scalar, tensor and vector perturbations which diverge ast»0. Att=0 the proposed solution for such modes becomes inapplicable. The behaviour of the metric of a homogeneous and, on average, isotropic Universe under the influence of all waves and all modes of perturbation is shown in Figure 1–3.  相似文献
