Groundwater recharge and base flow using different investigated methods are simulated in the 15-ha Bukmoongol small-forested watershed located at the southern part of Korea. The WHAT system, PART, RORA, PULSE, BFI, and RAP software are used to estimate groundwater recharge or base flow and base flow index from the measured streamflow. Results show that about 15–31 per cent of annual rainfall might be contributed for base flow. The watershed groundwater recharge proportions are computed to about 10–21 per cent during the wet period and 23–32 per cent for the remainder periods. Mean annual base flow indices vary from 0.25 to 0.76 estimated using different methods. However, the study found out that all methods were significantly correlated with each other. The similarity of various methods is expressed as a weighted relationship provided by the matrix product from the principal component analysis. Overall, the BFI and WHAT software appeared consistent in estimating recharge or base flow, and base flow index under Korea’s conditions. The case study recommends the application of different models to other watersheds as well as in low-lying areas where most observation groundwater wells are located with available streamflow data.  相似文献

Underestimation of roughness in rough rock joints   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Numerous studies have been made to improve Barton's shear strength model for the quantification of rock joints. However, in these previous studies, the roughness and shear strength of the rock joint have been underestimated especially for relatively high undulated profiles (joint roughness coefficient (JRC) >14). The main factors of roughness underestimation in rough rock joints are investigated for the proper quantification of rock joint roughness. The aliasing effect and the roughness characteristics are analyzed by using artificial joint profiles and natural rock joint profiles. A 3D camera scanner is adopted to verify the main source of underestimation when using conventional measurement methods. Shear strength tests are carried out by using two types of shear apparatus to study the roughness mobilization characteristics, which may also affect the roughness underestimation. The results of joint roughness assessment, such as aliasing and undulation of waviness, show that the roughness can be underestimated in relatively rough joint profiles (JRC>14). At least two components of roughness parameters are needed to properly represent the joint roughness, for example, the amplitude and the inclination angle of joint asperity. Roughness mobilization is affected by both the normal stress and the asperity scale. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

To remove chromate from a wastewater, a porous permeable reactive barrier system (PRBS), using pyrite and biotite, was adapted. This study included bench‐scale column experiments to evaluate the efficiency of the PRBS and investigate the reaction process. The total chromium concentration of the effluent from the biotite and pyrite columns reached the influent concentration of 0·10 mM after passing through more than 150 pore volumes (PVs) and 27 PVs respectively, and remained constant thereafter. The CrVI concentration in the effluent from the biotite column became constant at about 0·08 mM , accounting for approximately 80% of the influent concentration, after passing through 200 PVs. Moreover, in the pyrite column, the CrVI concentration remained at about 0·01 mM , 10% of the input level, after passing through 116 PVs. This shows that both columns maintained their levels of chromate reduction once the CrVI breakthrough curves (BTCs) had reached the steady state, though the steady‐state output concentration of total chromium had reached the influent level. The variances of the iron concentration closely followed those of the chromium. The observed data for both columns were fitted to the predicted BTCs calculated by CXTFIT, a program for estimating the solute transport parameters from experimental data. The degradation coefficient µ of the total chromium BTCs for both columns was zero, suggesting the mechanisms for the removal of chromate limit the µ of the CrVI BTCs. The CrVI degradation of the pyrite column (6·60) was much greater than that of the biotite column (0·27). In addition, the CrVI retardation coefficient R of the pyrite column (253) was also larger than that of the biotite column (125). The R values for the total chromium BTCs from both columns were smaller than those of the CrVI BTC. Whereas the total chromium BTC for the pyrite column showed little retardation (1·5), the biotite column showed considerable retardation (80). The results for the 900 °C heat‐treated biotite column were analogous to those of the control column (quartz sand). This suggests that the heat‐treated biotite played no role in the retardation and removal of hexavalent chromium. The parameters of the heat‐treated biotite were calculated to an R of 1·2 and µ of 0·01, and these values confirmed quantitatively that the heated biotite had little effect on the transport of CrVI. These solute transport parameters, calculated by CXTFIT from the data obtained from the column tests, can provide quantitative information for the evaluation of bench‐ or field‐scale columns as a removal technology for CrVI in wastewater or contaminated groundwater. A 1:5 scale five‐story RC building model having the irregularities of a soft/weak story and torsion at the ground story was subjected to a series of earthquake simulation tests. The test results reveal the following: The eccentricity varied from zero to infinity with the values of base shear and torque bounded by some limits. As the intensity of table excitations increased, representing earthquakes with return periods from 50 to 2500 years in Korea, the range of eccentricities at the peak values in the time histories of drift and base shear decreased from approximately ±30% to within ±10% of the transverse dimension of the model. The inertial torque was resisted by both longitudinal and transverse frames, in proportion to their instantaneous rigidity. Yielding of the longitudinal frames under severe table excitations caused a substantial loss in their instantaneous torsional resistance and thereby transferred most of the large torque to the transverse frames, resulting in a significantly degraded torsional stiffness with an enlarged torsional deformation despite almost zero eccentricity. From these observations, it is clear that the eccentricity in itself cannot represent the critical torsional behaviors. To overcome this problem, the demand in torque shall be determined in a direct relationship with the base or story shear, given as an ellipse constructed with the maximum points in its principal axes located by the two adjacent torsion‐dominant modal spectral values. This approach provides a simple but transparent design tool by enabling comparison between demand and supply in shear force–torque diagrams. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Cheomseongdae is known to be the oldest astronomical observatory in Asia. According to historical records, the Gyeongju area, where Cheomseongdae is located, suffered from numerous medium‐scale earthquakes. Cheomseongdae has a masonry structure, which is apparently vulnerable to horizontal dynamic loads such as earthquakes. However, despite its appearance, features such as the filler of the lower half, inner irregular‐shaped stones which can induce high frictional resistance, eight long horizontal tie stones inside the artefact, and a grid of interlocking headstones increase its resistance to horizontal dynamic loads. Dynamic centrifuge model tests were performed on Cheomseongdae in order to evaluate the seismic response characteristics of this architectural heritage structure. Model tests were executed on two 1/15‐scale models: one which was an exact duplicate of the original Cheomseongdae and the other without the long horizontal tie stones and grid of interlocking headstones. On the basis of the amplification patterns in the time and frequency domains, the differences in seismic behaviour between the two Cheomseongdae models, and a broken stone at the 19th layer during tests, the long horizontal tie stones and headstones were found to increase the seismic resistance within Cheomseongdae and provide a glimpse of the ‘seismic design’ of our ancestors. Frequency analysis of streamflow provides an essential ingredient in our understanding of hydrologic events and provides needed guidance in the design and management of water resources infrastructure. However, traditional hydrologic approaches often fail to include important external effects that can result in unpredictable or unforeseen changes in streamflow. Moreover, previous studies investigating multiple characteristics of streamflow do not address a nonstationary approach. This study explores nonstationary frequency analysis of bivariate characteristics, including occurrence and severity, of annual low flow in the Connecticut River Basin, United States. To investigate bivariate low flow frequency, copulas and their marginal distributions are constructed by using stationary and nonstationary approaches. Our study results indicate that streamflow used in this study demonstrate significant nonstationarity. Over time, the occurrence and severity of low flows are shown to be lower with the same probability based on the results of nonstationary copulas. Bivariate low flow frequencies in the years 1970, 2000, and 2030, and their joint return periods are estimated under the nonstationary copulas. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Carbon emissions from forest fires are considered an important factor of ecosystem carbon balance and global climate change. Carbon emissions from Japanese red pine stands (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) burned by crown fire were estimated at Mt. Palgong in Daegu Metropolitan City, and crown fuel characteristics, including crown bulk density, crown base height, and fuel moisture content of Japanese red pine, were analyzed. Total biomass combusted was calculated by subtracting the biomass of burned stands from that of unburned stands exhibiting similar stand structures and site environments. Ten trees in the unburned area and five trees in the burned area were cut by using direct harvesting techniques to estimate crown layer biomass. All biomass sampled was oven-dried and weighed. The dry weight ratios of stems, branches, and needles were 70%, 21%, and 9%, respectively. The available fuel load susceptible to combustion during the crown fire spread was equivalent to 55% of the crown layer biomass. The crown bulk density was 0.24 kg/ m 3 on average. The estimated amount of CO 2 was 23,454 kg CO 2 /ha for the crown layer. These results will be useful for calculating the amount of CO 2 emitted from forest fires and for developing a forest carbon model in P. densiflora forests.  相似文献

Shallow and bedrock groundwater from granitic aquifers were investigated for the hydrogeochemistry of major and minor constituents in an agricultural area. Nitrate concentrations were observed up to 49 mg/l as NO3‐N, with 22% of samples exceeding the drinking water standard, which could pose a significant threat because most residents rely on groundwater as their drinking water source. Principal component analysis revealed three principal components (PCs): (1) nitrate contamination, contributed by major cations, Cl?, SO and NO , (2) reduction processes positively involving Fe, Mn and B, and negatively involving dissolved oxygen and NO and (3) natural mineralization, involving HCO and F?. Cluster analysis, performed on the PC scores, resulted in seven sample groups, which were successfully identified by total depth, elevation and land use. The nitrate‐contaminated groups had mixed land uses, with locally concentrated residential areas. Uncontaminated groundwater groups were found in the natural environment, including high‐altitude spring water and bedrock groundwater with a higher degree of natural mineralization. Shallow groundwater groups in paddy fields in lowlands were affected by reducing environments, of which one group was characterized by high Fe, Mn and B, and negligible nitrate. Groundwater with intermediate nitrate and lower Cl? and SO was found primarily in hilly terrains with orchards and vegetable gardens, indicating lower contaminant loadings than lowland areas. Higher concentrations of F? and nitrate were observed in the nitrate‐contaminated water, which seemed unlikely to be explained by groundwater mixing. The strong acidity generated from nitrification may infiltrate deeper into the aquifer, induce accelerated weathering of bedrock and result in the coexistence of F? and nitrate, which may be an evidence of intense nitrate loading, leading to soil acidification. Multivariate statistical analysis successfully delineated hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater attained by natural and anthropogenic processes in an agriculturally stressed area with complex topographic land use patterns.
