In situ composition measurements of atmospheric negative ions were made at 40.8 km altitude using a balloon-borne mass spectrometer with large mass range and improved mass resolution. The data obtained show marked differences compared to previous data obtained mostly around or below 33 km.It appears that these differences are mostly due to a higher atmospheric temperature, a lower nitric acid vapour abundance and a larger HSO3-vapour abundance prevailing at the higher altitude.A particularly striking feature is the relatively large fractional abundance of HSO3-containing cluster ions.Another interesting result is that nitric acid vapour abundances can be inferred from the negative ion composition data with better accuracy than is possible for lower altitudes. The reason being that collisional ion dissociation occurring during ion sampling is less disturbing.The inferred nitric acid vapour abundance for 40.8 km altitude is consistent with current 2-dimensional model calculations.  相似文献

Abstract— We studied the infrared reflectance (IR), Raman, and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopic signatures and scanning electron microscope‐cathodoluminescence (SEM‐CL) images of three different types of impact glasses: Aouelloul impact glass, a Muong Nong‐type tektite, and Libyan desert glass. Both backscattered electron (BSE) and CL images of the Muong Nong‐type tektite are featureless; the BSE image of the Libyan desert glass shows only weak brightness contrasts. For the Aouelloul glass, both BSE and CL images show distinct brightness contrast, and the CL images for the Libyan desert glass show spectacular flow textures that are not visible in any other microscopic method. Compositional data show that the SiO2 composition is relatively higher and the Al2O3 content is lower in the CL‐bright areas than in the CL‐dark regions. The different appearance of the three glass types in the CL images indicates different peak temperatures during glass formation: the tektite was subjected to the highest temperature, and the Aouelloul impact glass experienced a relatively low formation temperature, while the Libyan desert glass preserves a flow texture that is only visible in the CL images, indicating a medium temperature. All IR reflectance spectra show a major band at around 1040 to 1110 cm?1 (antisymmetric stretching of SiO4 tetrahedra), with minor peaks between 745 and 769 cm?1 (Si‐O‐Si angle deformation). Broad bands at 491 and 821 cm?1 in the Raman spectra in all samples are most likely related to diaplectic glass remnants, indicating early shock amorphization followed by thermal amorphization. The combination of these spectroscopic methods allows us to deduce information about the peak formation temperature of the glass, and the CL images, in particular, show glass flow textures that are not preserved in other more conventional petrographic images.  相似文献

A statistical analysis of the cosmic-ray intensity (CR) daily means, registered at three Neutron Monitor stations with different cut-off rigidities (Deep River, Climax and Alma-Ata), as well as, of the solar hard X-ray flares fluence recorded by Venera-13, -14 space-probes, has been performed for the time interval 1981–1983. Various methods of time series spectrum analysis, such as Fast Fourier Analysis (FFT) and Maximum Entropy (MESA), accompanied by appropriate statistical tests, have been employed to detect periodicities, while the method of Successive Approximations (SA) is used independently in order to define the amplitude and the phase of each fluctuation. New short-term periodicities of 100, 70, 50 and 32 days, in addition to the known ones of 152, 27 and 14 days, appeared in cosmic ray data. During this particular time interval, similar spectral behaviour has been reported in the solar hard X-ray flares data. The influence of the solar hard X-ray flares variability in the energy range 50–500 keV, expressed by their fluence values, upon the cosmic-ray modulation, is discussed.  相似文献

A new multichannel spectrometer, Phoenix-3, is in operation having capabilities to observe solar flare radio emissions in the 0.1?–?5 GHz range at an unprecedented spectral resolution of 61.0 kHz with high sensitivity. The present setup for routine observations allows measuring circular polarization, but requires a data compression to 4096 frequency channels in the 1?–?5 GHz range and to a temporal resolution of 200 ms. First results are presented by means of a well observed event that included narrowband spikes at 350?–?850 MHz. Spike bandwidths are found to have a power?–?law distribution, dropping off below a value of 2 MHz for full width at half maximum (FWHM). The narrowest spikes have a FWHM bandwidth less than 0.3 MHz or 0.04% of the central frequency. The smallest half-power increase occurs within 0.104 MHz at 443.5 MHz, which is close to the predicted natural width of maser emission. The spectrum of spikes is found to be asymmetric, having an enhanced low-frequency tail. The distribution of the total spike flux is approximately an exponential.  相似文献

Open-shutter RHESSI observations of 3–15 keV X-rays are found to exhibit active-region transient brightenings and microflares at a rate of a least 10 per hour occurring even during the periods of lowest solar activity so far in the mission. A thermal component fitted by temperatures of 6–14 MK dominates from 3 keV to about 9 keV, but can be traced up to 14 keV in some cases, and has an average duration of 131(±103) s at 7–8 keV. The duration increases with decreasing photon energy. The peak count rate defined by cross-correlation is delayed at low energies. The temperature peaks early in the event and then decreases, whereas the emission measure increases throughout the event. The properties are consistent with thermal conduction dominating the evolution. In some of the bigger events, a second component was found in the 11–14 keV range extending down to 8 keV in some cases. The duration is typically 3 times shorter and ends near the peak time of the thermal component consistent with the Neupert effect of regular flares. Therefore the second component is suggested to be of non-thermal origin, presumably causing the beam-driven evaporation of the first component. The two components can be separated and analyzed in detail for the first time. Low-keV measurements allow a reliable estimate of the energy input by microflares necessary to assess their relevance for coronal heating. Whether or not tropical climate fluctuated in synchrony with global events during the Late Pleistocene is a key problem in climate research. However, the timing of past climate changes in the tropics remains controversial, with a number of recent studies reporting that tropical ice age climate is out of phase with global events. Here, we present geomorphic evidence and an in-situ cosmogenic 3He surface-exposure chronology from Nevado Coropuna, southern Peru, showing that glaciers underwent at least two significant advances during the Late Pleistocene prior to Holocene warming. Comparison of our glacial-geomorphic map at Nevado Coropuna to mid-latitude reconstructions yields a striking similarity between Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and Late-Glacial sequences in tropical and temperate regions.Exposure ages constraining the maximum and end of the older advance at Nevado Coropuna range between 24.5 and 25.3 ka, and between 16.7 and 21.1 ka, respectively, depending on the cosmogenic production rate scaling model used. Similarly, the mean age of the younger event ranges from 10 to 13 ka. This implies that (1) the LGM and the onset of deglaciation in southern Peru occurred no earlier than at higher latitudes and (2) that a significant Late-Glacial event occurred, most likely prior to the Holocene, coherent with the glacial record from mid and high latitudes. The time elapsed between the end of the LGM and the Late-Glacial event at Nevado Coropuna is independent of scaling model and matches the period between the LGM termination and Late-Glacial reversal in classic mid-latitude records, suggesting that these events in both tropical and temperate regions were in phase.  相似文献

Lechaion, the western harbor of ancient Corinth, was an artificial harbor excavated in a marshy area and connected to the open sea through a channel with revetment walls. It was probably the most important harbor of this type in antiquity, and one of the most important harbors in Greece for more than one millennium. Yet, the date of construction of this harbor is a matter of debate; 600 B.C., ca. 44 B.C., and A.D. 350 are the most probable dates. Geomorphological and biological investigations, in combination with AMS radiocarbon dating of exposed marine shells found in the walls of the channel leading to the inner basin of the harbor indicate that the channel was open to the sea before a seismic land uplift that probably occurred sometime in the fifth to third century B.C. These data indicate that the construction of the harbor began in ca. 600 B.C., the period of Corinthian expansion to the Ionian Sea and southern Italy. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
