his study presents the first and detail field investigations of exposed deposits at proximal sections of the Barombi Mbo Maar (BMM), NE Mt Cameroon, with the aim of documenting its past activity, providing insight on the stratigraphic distribution, depositional process, and evolution of the eruptive sequences during its formation. Field evidence reveals that the BMM deposit is about 126m thick, of which about 20m is buried lowermost under the lake level and covered by vegetation. Based on variation in pyroclastic facies within the deposit, it can be divided into three main stratigraphic units: U1, U2 and U3. Interpretation of these features indicates that U1 consists of alternating lapilli-ash-lapilli beds series, in which fallout derived individual lapilli-rich beds are demarcated by surges deposits made up of thin, fine-grained and consolidated ash-beds that are well-defined, well-sorted and laterally continuous in outcrop scale. U2, a pyroclastic fall-derived unit, shows crudely lenticular stratified scoriaceous layers, in which many fluidal and spindle bombs-rich lapilli-beds are separated by very thin, coarse-vesiculatedash-beds, overlain by a mantle xenolith- and accidental lithic-rich explosive breccia, and massive lapilli tuff and lapillistone. U3 displays a series of surges and pyroclastic fall layers. Emplacement processes were largely controlled by fallout deposition and turbulent diluted pyroclastic density currents under “dry” and “wet” conditions. The eruptive activity evolved in a series of initial phreatic eruptions, which gradually became phreatomagmatic, followed by a phreato-Strombolian and a violent phreatomagmatic fragmentation. A relatively long-time break, demonstrated by a paleosol between U2 and U3, would have permitted the feeding of the root zone or the prominent crater by the water that sustained the next eruptive episode, dominated by subsequent phreatomagmatic eruptions. These preliminary results require complementary studies, such as geochemistry, for a better understanding of the changes in the eruptive styles, and to develop more constraints on the maar’s polygenetic origin.  相似文献

Shallowly buried archaeological sites are particularly susceptible to surface and subsurface disturbance processes. Yet, because cultural deposition often operates on short time scales relative to geologic deposition, vertical artifact distributions can be used to clarify questions of site formation. In particular, patterns in artifact distributions that cannot be explained by occupation histories must be explained by natural processes that have affected sites. Buried only 10–50 cm beneath the ground surface for 10,450 14C yr, the Folsom component at Barger Gulch Locality B (Middle Park, Colorado) exhibits many signs of post‐depositional disturbance. Through examination of variation in the vertical distribution of the artifact assemblage, we are able to establish that only a Folsom component is present. Using vertical artifact distributions, stratigraphy, and radiocarbon dating, we are able to reconstruct the series of events that have impacted the site. The Folsom occupation (˜10,450 14C yr B.P.) was likely initially buried in a late‐Pleistocene eolian silt loam. Erosion brought the artifacts to rest on a deflation surface at some time prior to 9400 14C yr B.P. A mollic epipedon formed in sediments that accumulated between 9400 and 7000 14C yr B.P. Some time after 5200 14C yr B.P., this soil was partially truncated, and artifacts that had previously dispersed upward created a secondary lag at its upper contact. Hysteresis in the relationship between capillary pressure (Pc), wetting phase saturation (Sw) and nonwetting–wetting interfacial area per volume (anw) is investigated using multiphase lattice-Boltzmann simulations of drainage and imbibition in a glass bead porous system. In order to validate the simulations, the PcSw and anwSw main hysteresis loops were compared to experimental data reported by Culligan et al. [Culligan KA, Wildenschild D, Christensen BS, Gray WG, Rivers ML, Tompson AB. Interfacial area measurements for unsaturated flow through porous media. Water Resour Res 2004;40:W12413]. In general, the comparison shows that the simulations are reliable and capture the important physical processes in the experimental system. PcSw curves, anwSw curves and phase distributions (within the pores) show good agreement during drainage, but less satisfactory agreement during imbibition. Drainage and imbibition scanning curves were simulated in order to construct PcSwanw surfaces. The root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) between drainage and imbibition surfaces was 0.10 mm−1 and 0.03 mm−1, respectively. This small difference indicates that hysteresis is virtually nonexistent in the PcSwanw relationship for the multiphase system studied here. Additionally, a surface was fit to the main loop (excluding scanning curves) of the drainage and imbibition PcSwanw data and compared to the surface fit to all of the data. The differences between these two surfaces were small (RMSE = 0.05 mm−1 and MAE = 0.01 mm−1) indicating that the PcSwanw surface is adequately represented without the need for the scanning curve data, which greatly reduces the amount of data required to construct the non-hysteretic PcSwanw surface for this data.  相似文献

利用2006年南极威德尔海冬季科学考察期间由机载激光高度计测得的海冰上表面形态数据,以拖曳分割理论为基础研究了冰脊形拖曳力及其对冰-气总拖曳力的贡献以及中性条件下对应10 m高度处风速的冰-气拖曳系数Cdn(10)。结果显示,在密集冰区,冰脊形拖曳力及其对总拖曳力的贡献随冰脊强度(脊高/脊距)的增大呈递增趋势,而随粗糙长度的增大而减小,对应于威德尔海冬季典型冰脊强度和粗糙长度,占总拖曳力的35%,说明了冰脊形拖曳力在冰-气界面动量交换中的重要作用。Cdn(10)随冰脊强度的增大而增大,但冰脊强度较小时,Cdn(10)随粗糙长度增大而增大;而对较大的冰脊强度,Cdn(10)则随粗糙长度增大而减小。  相似文献

Resonantly driven Alfvén waves are studied in non-uniform stationary magnetic flux tubes. Analytic dissipative MHD solutions are obtained for the Lagrangian displacement and the Eulerian perturbation of the total pressure. These analytic solutions are valid in the dissipative layer and in the two overlap regions to the left and the right of the dissipative layer. From these analytic solutions we obtain the fundamental conservation law and the jump conditions for resonantly driven Alfvén waves in magnetic flux tubes with an equilibriun flow. The fundamental conservation law and the jump conditions depend on the equilibrium flow in a more complicated way than just a Doppler shift. The effects of an equlibrium flow are not to be predicted easily in general terms with the exception that the polarization of the driven Alfvén waves is still in the magnetic surfaces and perpendicular to the magnetic field lines as it is in a static flux tube.  相似文献

The present paper discusses the implementation of the SGHR method (Sakurai, Goossens, and Hollweg, 1991; Goossens, Ruderman, and Hollweg, 1995) in a numerical scheme for determining resonantly driven Alfvén waves in nonuniform magnetic flux tubes. This method is based on jump conditions over the dissipative layer which are obtained from an asymptotic analysis of analytical solutions to simplified versions of the linear non-ideal MHD equations in this dissipative layer. The emphasis is on the computational simplicity and the accuracy of the method. The method derives its computational simplicity from the fact that it circumvents the numerical integration of the non-ideal MHD equations. The implementation only requires the numerical integration of the ideal MHD equations away from the resonant position. There is no need for a special integration scheme and a PC suffices as a hardware tool.The accuracy of the method is verified by means of test computations. These test computations deal with the loss of power of acoustic waves in sunspots by resonant absorption of Alfvén waves. Results for the absorption coefficients obtained with the SGHR method are compared with known results in the literature obtained by integration of the full set of the linearized non-ideal MHD equations. The agreement is excellent and identifies the SGHR method as a powerful and extremely easy to use tool for studying resonant Alfvén waves.  相似文献

Considerable research has examined the social, cultural, economic, and community benefits of urban gardening. Few studies, however, have empirically assessed factors that influence urban community garden agrodiversity or its relationship to these dimensions of gardening. We conducted an interdisciplinary study of agrodiversity and cultural identity, based certain markers of identity, including how people see themselves with respect to race, ethnicity, or place of origin, in community gardens in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We conducted fifty‐six semistructured interviews with gardeners with different cultural identities in eight community gardens on their motivations for urban community gardening during 2014. We conducted plant inventories of the corresponding garden plots and found 104 cultivated edible and ornamental species and 28 varieties representing 34 families. We find that although gardens with culturally diverse gardeners did not have higher species richness, the cultural identity of the gardeners influenced species selection and reason for gardening. Further, the structure, design and species composition of garden plots reflected the identities of garden members. These finding have implications for the recent institutionalization of urban agriculture into city land policies in Philadelphia and other cities in North America.  相似文献

In South Africa, fishery managers have struggled with a number of challenges in terms of compliance amidst a process of legal and policy reform since the democratic elections of 1994. The past 10 years, and more specifically the past five, have seen a significant change in compliance effort, with a particular focus on increasing law enforcement activities and capacity. This paper highlights two case studies that have been instrumental in restructuring fisheries compliance in South Africa. Although law enforcement has been significantly strengthened, greater political will and government commitment is required to implement alternative strategies that will have a long-term impact on levels of compliance.  相似文献
