The connection between long Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) and Supernovae (SNe) have been established through the well observed cases.
These events can be explained as the prompt collapse to a black hole (BH) of the core of a massive star (M≳40M
⊙). The energies of these GRB-SNe were much larger than those of typical SNe, thus these SNe are called Hypernovae (HNe). The
case of SN 2006aj/GRB060218 appears different: the GRB was weak and soft, being called an X-Ray Flash (XRF); the SN is dimmer
and has very weak oxygen lines. The explosion energy of SN 2006aj was smaller, as was the ejected mass. In our model, the
progenitor star had a smaller mass than other GRB-SNe (M∼20M
⊙), suggesting that a neutron star (NS) rather than a BH was formed. If the nascent NS was strongly magnetized as a magnetar
and rapidly spinning, it may launch a weak GRB or an XRF. The peculiar light curve of Type Ib SN 2005bf may also be powered
by a magnetar. The blue-shifted nebular emission lines of 2005bf indicate the unipolar explosion possibly related to standing
accretion shock instability (SASI) associated with a newly born NS. 相似文献

Soil pipes are considered to drain off water from a hillslope and play an important role in the subsurface runoff generation
process, thus reducing the slope failure susceptibility. However, soil pipes are also often detected on the collapsed slope
suggesting that they might act to induce slope instability. To examine how the soil pipes act on pore-water pressure generation
and on a slope failure processes, a numerical model was developed. The model was used to test the response of pore-water pressure
in a hillslope with soil pipes of different cross-sectional areas, lengths, distances from the impermeable bed, roughness,
and hillslope angles. The model was also tested to find the response of open soil pipe if blocked. The study reveals that
pipes reduce pore-water pressure (measured closed to bed) around its upstream end and increase around its downstream end if
compared with no pipe case. Pore-water pressure at downstream end is increased with increase in hillslope angle, pipe cross-sectional
area, pipe length, or depth of soil pipe. Soil pipe, even if it is ended within the hillslope, increases the total discharge
from hillslope. Location of rough soil also affects the discharge and pressure within the hillslope. If the less rough pipe
is close to the source of water, discharge from hillslope matrix is greater regardless of its downstream pipe roughness. Blockage
of small portion of open soil pipe increases the soil pressure around the region but not beyond the case if there is no soil
pipe. However, complete collapse of soil pipe from a point to all along the downstream end of hillslope increases the pore-water
pressure beyond the pressure if there were no soil pipes. Therefore, the position and type of soil pipe collapse might play

Charles Lyell, on his way to becoming a famous geologist, married Mary Horner in Bonn in July 1832; volume 3 of his ‘Principles of Geology’ was published by John Murray in London in May 1833. Between these two dates Lyell encountered the loess of the Rhine valley. The loess impressed Lyell and he included mentions of it in the Principles, first in 1833 and then, with some revised ideas, in volume 4 of the 4th edition published in 1835. Twelve editions of the Principles were published between 1830 and 1875 and it became one of the most important works in the development of geology, and made a major contribution to the worldwide spread of loess awareness. It is possible that Lyell was drawn to the loess because of its high molluscan content, he was particularly attracted to the study of shells. 相似文献

The International Union of Quaternary Research (INQUA) organized the study and consideration of the Quaternary Period (the last 2.6 million years in Earth’s history) via a set of commissions, sub-commissions, working groups, projects and programmes. One of the most successful and best records was the Loess Commission (LC) which functioned assub-commission and then commission from 1961 to 2003, resulting in 40 years of useful activity. The history of the LC can be divided into three phases: 1, from 1961–1977 when the President was Julius Fink; 2, from 1977–1991, with President Marton Pecsi; 3, from 1991–2003 with Presidents An Zhi-Sheng and Ian Smalley. Fink, from Vienna, and Pecsi, from Budapest, gave the LC a distinctly Central European aspect. The nature of loess in Central Europe influenced the nature of the LC but the settings for phases 1 and 2 were quite distinct. Phase 1 was a small scale academic operation, carried out in German. As phase 2 began in 1977 the scope expanded and Central Europe became a base for worldwide loess studies. where the LC language changed to English. Phase 2 was run from a National Geographical Institute and demonstrated a different approach to loess research, although the basic programmes of continent-wide mapping and stratigraphy remained the same. The Commission benefited from this change of style and emphasis. In phase 3 the administration moved away from Central Europe but the Finkian ethos remained solid. 相似文献

Impact between windblown quartz grains as a source of desert dust is consistent with laboratory abrasion experiments and has received some field confirmation in the Negev. The suggestion is that an important process on Mars now gains support from laboratory studies; even though their geochemical interpretation is controversial, they show that dust generation by impact is tenable even for quartz. A simple mechanism for small dust production from sand seas is proposed; internal stresses can be mobilized by impact energy. A speculative mechanism (the andesite scenario) is proposed for fine particle production by particle impact on Mars. The internal stress range in terrestrial sand grains may vary, depending on the nature of the source rock, and this may influence particle production by impact processes. 相似文献

It is now believed that the UV upturn sources in nearby early-type galaxies are horizontal-branch (HB) stars and their progeny. Recent studies have suggested that the HB temperature variation is mainly caused by age along with metallicity, which makes the UV upturn attractive as a potential age indicator for presumably the oldest populations in the universe—elliptical galaxies. However, the age explanation for HB temperature variation still has a number of hurdles to pass. Here, we summarize the pros and cons of the age hypothesis and report our recent progress in understanding of HB stars. The Kwakshua Watersheds Observatory (KWO) is an integrative watersheds observatory on the coastal margin of a rain-dominated bog-forest landscape in British Columbia (BC), Canada. Established in 2013, the goal of the KWO is to understand and model the flux of terrestrial materials from land to sea – the origins, pathways, processes and ecosystem consequences – in the context of long-term environmental change. The KWO consists of seven gauged watersheds and a network of observation sites spanning from land to sea and along drainage gradients within catchments. Time-series datasets include year-round measurements of weather, soil hydrology, streamflow, aquatic biogeochemistry, microbial ecology and nearshore oceanographic conditions. Sensor measurements are recorded every 5 min and water samples are collected approximately monthly. Additional observations are made during high-flow conditions. We used remote sensing to map watershed terrain, drainage networks, soils and terrestrial ecosystems. The watersheds range in size from 3.2 to 12.8 km2, with varying catchment characteristics that influence hydrological and biogeochemical responses. Despite local variation, the overall study area is a global hotspot for yields of dissolved organic carbon, dissolved organic nitrogen and dissolved iron at the coastal margin. This observatory helps fill an important gap in the global network of observatories, in terms of spatial location (central coast of BC), climate (temperate oceanic), hydrology (very high runoff, pluvial regime), geology (igneous intrusive, glacially scoured), vegetation (bog rainforest) and soils (large stores of organic carbon). 相似文献
