Models must effectively represent velocities and celerities if they are to address the old water paradox. Celerity information is recorded indirectly in hydrograph observations, whereas velocity information is more difficult to measure and simulate effectively, requiring additional assumptions and parameters. Velocity information can be obtained from tracer experiments, but we often lack information on the influence of soil properties on tracer mobility. This study features a combined experimental and modelling approach geared towards the evaluation of different structures in the multiple interacting pathways (MIPs) model and validates the representation of velocities with laboratory tracer experiments using an undisturbed soil column. Results indicate that the soil microstructure was modified during the experiment. Soil water velocities were represented using MIPs, testing how the (a) shape of the velocity distribution, (b) transition probability matrices (TPMs), (c) presence of immobile storage, and (d) nonstationary field capacity influence the model's performance. In MIPs, the TPM controls exhanges of water between pathways. In our experiment, MIPs were able to provide a good representation of the pattern of outflow. The results show that the connectedness of the faster pathways is important for controlling the percolation of water and tracer through the soil. The best model performance was obtained with the inclusion of immobile storage, but simulations were poor under the assumption of stationary parameters. The entire experiment was adequately simulated once a time‐variable field capacity parameter was introduced, supporting the need for including the effects of soil microstructure changes observed during the experiment.  相似文献

This paper provides a historical review and critique of stochastic generating models for hydrological observables, from early generation of monthly discharge series, through flood frequency estimation by continuous simulation, to current weather generators. There are a number of issues that arise in such models, from uncertainties in the observational data on which such models must be based, to the potential persistence effects in hydroclimatic systems, the proper representation of tail behaviour in the underlying distributions, and the interpretation of future scenarios.  相似文献

Glacimarine sediment deposited in the fjord adjacent to Muir Glacier in south-eastern Alaska consists of rhythmically laminated muds, stratified sandy mud, sand and gravelly mud facies. Cyclicity is recorded by gravelly mud facies deposited during winter by ice-rafting, black mud laminae formed by spring plankton blooms and variations in tidal rhythmite thickness and texture produced by the interaction of meltwater discharges and tidal currents in the macrotidal fjord. Regular cyclicity in laminae thickness is tested statistically by Fourier transform and can be attributed to a lunar tidal cycle control in the five cores collected up to 6 km from the sediment source. Cores close to the source can have additional laminae as a result of discharge fluctuations, and distal cores may lack full cycles because of variability in the plume path and attenuation with distance. Cyclic variations in sediment texture are recorded in magnetic susceptibility (MS) profiles of the cores. High MS values are produced by turbidite sand beds or by stratified sandy mud deposited by overflow plumes during peak summer meltwater discharge. Low values reflect muddy intervals deposited during periods of low meltwater discharge, such as during autumn and winter. Sediment accumulation rates measured by 210Pb dating range from 82 cm year–1, 2 km from the sediment source at the head of the fjord, to 16 cm year–1, 6 km away. These rates are within the same range as average sediment accumulation rates determined from cyclic seasonal markers within the cores. These data show that, with careful documentation, annual cycles of glacimarine sediment accumulation can be detected within marine cores. Cores collected from the distal portion of the basin were deposited during the transition of Muir Glacier from a tidewater terminus ending in deep water to a terrestrial glacier with an ice-contact delta deposited in front of the terminus. This transition is recorded by a coarsening-upward sedimentary sequence formed by turbidite sands originating from the prograding delta above fine-grained, laminated basin fill deposited by turbid overflow plumes.  相似文献

The technique of Doppler tomography has been influential in the study of mass transfer in Algol‐type interacting binaries. The Algols contain a hot blue dwarf star with a magnetically‐active late‐type companion. In the close Algols, the gas stream flows directly into the photosphere of the blue mass‐gaining star because it does not have enough room to avoid impact with that star. Doppler tomograms of the Algols have been produced from over 2500 time‐resolved spectra at wavelengths corresponding to Hα, Hβ, He I (6678 Å), Si II (6371 Å) and Si IV (1394 ° A). These tomograms display images of accretion structures that include a gas stream, accretion annulus, accretion disk, stream‐star impact region, and occasionally a source of chromospheric emission associated with the cool, mass‐losing companion. Some Algol systems alternate between streamlike and disk‐like states, and provide direct evidence of active mass transfer within the Algols. This work produced the very first images of the gas stream for the entire class of interacting binaries, and demonstrated that the Algols are far more active than formerly believed, with variability on time scales of weeks to months. The horizontal distributions of reactive silicate and zinc in the Otago Harbour, New Zealand, a shallow, vertically well-mixed estuary, have been compared. Within the harbour silicate displayed a linear salinity profile on two sampling occasions in October and early November. Consideration of the silicate budget suggested some removal of freshwater silicate in the headwaters of the estuary. Zinc concentrations, measured using state-of-the-art clean laboratory techniques were orders of magnitude lower than previously published data for coastal waters. Typical values of 5–20 ng l−1 Zn were recorded in the seaward endmember. Zinc-salinity profiles were approximately linear. Relationships between zinc and silicate concentrations for the estuarine and freshwater samples suggest a coupling between the rates of supply of these elements to the ocean and their utilisation by plankton.  相似文献

The bioavailability and bacterial degradation rates of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were determined over a seasonal cycle in Loch Creran (Scotland) by measuring the decrease in dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (DON) and phosphorous (DOP) concentrations during long-term laboratory incubations (150 days) at a constant temperature of 14 °C. The experiments showed that bioavailable DOC (BDOC) accounted for 29 ± 11% of DOC (average ± SD), bioavailable DON (BDON) for 52 ± 11% of DON and bioavailable DOP (BDOP) for 88 ± 8% of DOP. The seasonal variations in DOM concentrations were mainly due to the bioavailable fraction. BDOP was degraded at a rate of 12 ± 4% d– 1 (average ± SD) while the degradation rates of BDOC and BDON were 7 ± 2% d– 1 and 9 ± 2% d– 1 respectively, indicating a preferential mineralization of DOP relative to DON and of DON relative to DOC. Positive correlations between concentration and degradation rate of DOM suggested that the higher the concentration the faster DOM would be degraded. On average, 77 ± 9% of BDOP, 62 ± 14% of BDON and 49 ± 19% of BDOC were mineralized during the residence time of water in Loch Creran, showing that this coastal area exported C-rich DOM to the adjacent Firth of Lorne. Four additional degradation experiments testing the effect of varying temperature on bioavailability and degradation rates of DOM were also conducted throughout the seasonal cycle (summer, autumn, winter and spring). Apart from the standard incubations at 14 °C, additional studies at 8 °C and 18 °C were also conducted. Bioavailability did not change with temperature, but degradation rates were stimulated by increased temperature, with a Q10 of 2.6 ± 1.1 for DOC and 2.5 ± 0.7 for DON (average ± SD).  相似文献

Persistent northeasterly trade winds have a substantial impact on the oceanic circulation around the Hawaiian Islands. A regional ocean model is applied to understand the effect of different temporal and spatial resolutions of surface momentum forcing on the formation of strong mesoscale vortices and on the simulation of realistic levels of eddy kinetic energy. The higher spatial and temporal resolutions of wind forcing is shown to substantially affect the vorticity and deformation field in the immediate lee of the Hawaiian Islands and produce patterns of eddy kinetic energy similar to observations. This suggests that the surface eddy field in the region is mostly dominated by the local surface momentum forcing. Mesoscale cyclones and anticyclones formed in the lee of the Island of Hawaii are shown to have different propagation patterns. Mesoscale cyclones are more confined to the lee and are hence subject to interactions with the strong wind forcing and deformation field as well as smaller vortices formed in the wake of the other islands. Mesoscale anticyclones show not only a tendency to propagate further westward, but also to persist as coherent features as they propagate, even at relatively lower values of relative vorticity. The large strain rates that affect the propagation of the cyclones cause them to break down into filaments of positive vorticity. Rossby numbers of O(1) within vortices and filaments indicate that nonlinear interactions between the wind stress and the vertical component of the relative vorticity field is potentially important in producing large vertical velocities. Modeled cyclonic eddies show a good resemblance to observations both in terms of vertical structure and propagation patterns.  相似文献

This paper is a discussion of Rhoads and Kenworthy (1998) ‘Time-averaged flow structure in the central region of a stream confluence’ Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, 23 , 171–191, that focuses upon the methods used to identify secondary circulation in river channel confluences. It argues that the Rozovskii method that Rhoads and Kenworthy use to rotate their field data to allow identification of secondary circulation cells is flawed, and can result in misleading conclusions about the nature of flow processes in confluences. It recommends that there is a re-emphasis upon helical as opposed to secondary circulation, and that recent developments in both field monitoring and numerical modelling may help significantly in this respect. An analytical solution for the free-field seismic elastoplastic deformation of granular dry soil is developed. This solution is possible since the stress field solution from pseudostatic analysis is known at any acceleration level. A plastic potential function with two plastic material parameters is suggested to model the soil. This model can describe both the volume dilation and contraction of soil under shearing. Closed-form deformation solutions are derived for two special cases and the results from a numerical evaluation of the solution are compared with those measured from shaking table tests. From the deformation solution the shape of the horizontal plastic displacement distribution with depth is identical to that for the elastic deformation since both depend only on the distribution of the elastic shear modulus. Bed shear stress in open channel flows is often estimated from the logarithmic vertical velocity profile. However, most measuring devices used in the field do not allow for flow velocity to be measured very close to the bed. The lack of near-bed measurements is a critical loss of information which may affect bed shear stress estimates. Detailed velocity profiles obtained from a field acoustic Doppler velocimeter over three different bed roughnesses clearly show that the inclusion of near-bed points is critical for the estimation of bed shear stress in a shallow river environment. Moreover, the results indicate that using the full flow depth instead of the bottom 20 per cent of the profile generates an underestimation of the shear stress when flow is uniform. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
