Technetium (Tc) biokinetics were investigated in marine macroalgae using 92mTc as tracer. Green and red algae accumulated Tc (VII) to a very low degree (CF ? 1–20); however, a much higher affinity for pertechnetate was found in some brown algal species (CF > 103). Comparative tests with different species of brown algae revealed that technetium does not accumulate similarly in all species of this group. Moreover, no significant differences in radionuclide uptake were noted between brown algae exposed to Tc in either the IV or VII oxidation states. Bioaccumulation of technetium appears to be a metabolically controlled process since uptake did not occur in heat-killed individuals and both light and temperature significantly enhanced the accumulation of technetium in brown algae. Dissection of Sargassum vulgare following the uptake phase showed that the rapidly growing air bladder, leaf-like laterals and small branches contained higher Tc concentrations and retained a greater fraction of the radioactivity than the older, cylindrical main axis. Pertechnetate retention in two brown algae was found to be significantly different; their biological half-lives for Tc differed by an order of magnitude (Tb12 = 19 and 196 days). During depuration, loss took place more rapidly from the younger portions of the seaweed, as evidenced by the highest concentration and greatest fraction of Tc retained in the older, cylindrical main axis. Provided certain precautions are taken, brown algae such as Cystoseira compressa and S. vulgare would serve as good bioindicator organisms for the presence of Tc contamination in marine waters.  相似文献

Previous work related to central‐Auckland site Albert Park showed that sparse site histories for inner‐city weather stations can be usefully supplemented by mining searchable online historical archives (Papers Past, DigitalNZ), at least as far back as 1909. Assessment of potential is extended here back to 1853, within the context of developing a long‐term rainfall record for Auckland. Although late 19th century sources are thinner and of poorer quality, much useful information could be gleaned about the locations and exposures of early sites. Hypothesised implications for the rainfall record suggest that all early site data need to be adjusted upwards.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper we study analytically the simplest fluid mechanical model which can mimic the convective behavior which is thought to occur in the solid mantles of the terrestrial planets. The convecting materials are polycrystalline rocks, whose creep behavior depends very strongly on temperature and probably also on pressure. As a simple model of this situation, we consider the flow of a Newtonian viscous fluid, whose viscosity depends strongly on temperature (only), and in fact has an infinite viscosity below a certain temperature, and a constant viscosity above this temperature. This model would also be directly relevant to the convection of a melt beneath its own solid phase (e.g. water below ice, though in that case there are other physical complications).

As a consequence of this assumption, there is a vigorous convection zone overlain by a stagnant lid, as also observed in analogous laboratory experiments (Nataf and Richter, 1982). The analysis is then very similar to that of Roberts (1979), but the extension to variable viscosity introduces important differences, most notably that the boundary between the lid and the convecting zone is unknown, and not horizontal. The resulting buoyancy induced stresses near this boundary are much larger than the stresses produced by buoyancy in the side-wall plumes, and mean that the dynamics of this region, and hence also the heat flux, are independent of the rest of the cell. We give a first order approximation for the Nusselt number-Rayleigh number relationship.  相似文献

A computer methodology is presented that allows natural aggregate producers, local governmental, and nongovernmental planners to define specific locations that may have sand and gravel deposits meeting user-specified minimum size, thickness, and geographic and geologic criteria, in areas where the surficial geology has been mapped. As an example, the surficial geologic map of the South Merrimack quadrangle was digitized and several digital geographic information system databases were downloaded from the internet and used to estimate the sand and gravel resources in the quadrangle. More than 41 percent of the South Merrimack quadrangle has been mapped as having sand and (or) gravel deposited by glacial meltwaters. These glaciofluvial areas are estimated to contain a total of 10 million m3 of material mapped as gravel, 60 million m3 of material mapped as mixed sand and gravel, and another 50 million m3 of material mapped as sand with minor silt. The mean thickness of these areas is about 1.95 meters. Twenty tracts were selected, each having individual areas of more than about 14 acres (5.67 hectares) of stratified glacial-meltwater sand and gravel deposits, at least 10-feet (3.0 m) of material above the watertable, and not sterilized by the proximity of buildings, roads, streams and other bodies of water, or railroads. The 20 tracts are estimated to contain between about 4 and 10 million short tons (st) of gravel and 20 and 30 million st of sand. The five most gravel-rich tracts contain about 71 to 82 percent of the gravel resources in all 20 tracts and about 54–56 percent of the sand. Using this methodology, and the above criteria, a group of four tracts, divided by narrow areas sterilized by a small stream and secondary roads, may have the highest potential in the quadrangle for sand and gravel resources.

Butyltin species were measured in sediments from coastal locations in the Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Both butyltin and phenyltin species were measured in biota samples from four countries in this region. With tributyltin (TBT) concentrations up to 60 ngSng(-1), some sediments could be classified as contaminated (i.e. TBT>1.3 ngSng(-1)), namely Dukhan (Qatar), the BAPCO industrial complex and Askar (Bahrain), and Hilf and the Raysut Port Area (Oman). Higher concentrations of total butyltins were found in oysters relative to fish, but ranging from 6.5 to 488 ngSng(-1) dry weight they are nonetheless relatively low. Diphenyltin and triphenyltin were found in some fish and bivalves from the Gulf, but not in biota from the Gulf of Oman. The environmental levels of organotin species are comparatively low by global standards and pose no immediate public health problems.  相似文献

Oxygen and hydrogen isotopes were used in this study to detect a hydraulic connection between a sinkhole lake and a karst spring. In karst areas, surface water that flows to a lake can drain through sinkholes in the lakebed to the underlying aquifer, and then flows in karst conduits and through aquifer matrix. At the study site located in northwest Florida, USA, Lake Miccosukee immediately drains into two sinkholes. Results from a dye tracing experiment indicate that lake water discharges at Natural Bridge Spring, a first-magnitude spring 32 km downgradient from the lake. By collecting weekly water samples from the lake, the spring, and a groundwater well 10 m away from the lake during the dry period between October 2019 and January 2020, it was found that, when rainfall effects on isotopic signature in spring water are removed, increased isotope ratios of spring water can be explained by mixing of heavy-isotope-enriched lake water into groundwater, indicating hydraulic connection between the lake and the spring. Such a detection of hydraulic connection at the scale of tens of kilometers and for a first-magnitude spring has not been previously reported in the literature. Based on the isotope ratio data, it was estimated that, during the study period, about 8.5% the spring discharge was the lake water that drained into the lake sinkholes.  相似文献

We develop numerical solutions of a theoretical model which has been proposed to explain the formation of subglacial bedforms. The model has been shown to have the capability of producing bedforms in two dimensions, when they may be interpreted as ribbed moraine. However, these investigations have left unanswered the question of whether the theory is capable of producing fully three‐dimensional bedforms such as drumlins. We show that, while the three‐dimensional calculations show realistic quasi‐three‐dimensional features such as dislocations in the ribbing pattern, they do not produce genuine three‐dimensional drumlins. We suggest that this inadequacy is due to the treatment of subglacial drainage in the theory as a passive variable, and thus that the three‐dimensional forms may be associated with conditions of sufficient subglacial water flux. Barrier systems have received much attention along microtidal oceanic coastlines, where countless studies discuss their evolution in response to Holocene sea‐level rise, storm influence, and anthropogenic impacts. Lacustrine barrier evolution is not as well investigated and little is known about how lake‐specific hydrodynamic processes shape barrier morphology. This study evaluates the evolution of a highly dynamic barrier section along eastern Lake Ontario in the context of varying water levels and winter‐ice covers. Paleoshoreline reconstructions and volumetric analyses of nearshore sedimentation indicate the central portion of the studied North Pond barrier has been breached many times in different locations throughout the last century. Ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) data corroborate mapped locations of former inlets, bound at the surface by recurved spit and dune ridges. Subsurface structural controls on inlet position are inferred from a spatial correlation with buried incised fluvial channels, formed during a Holocene lake‐level lowstand. While subsurface controls caused two separate historical inlets to remain stationary while open, an episode of rapid inlet migration elsewhere along the barrier was facilitated by the prevailing direction of coastal currents and high lake levels, which favored overwash and rapid longshore sediment mobility across a low‐gradient barrier section. Additionally, the sudden closing of an inlet after many decades of operation coincidental with the opening of another suggestively occurred alongside unusually high lake levels. These correlations suggest the degree of coastal inundation, predominantly a function of fluctuating lake levels and antecedent topography, represent strong controls on overall barrier geomorphology over decadal timescales. Summary. The continent-ocean transition near Hatton Bank was studied using a dense grid of single-ship and two-ship multichannel seismic (mcs) profiles. Extensive oceanward dipping reflectors in a sequence of igneous rocks are developed in the upper crust across the entire margin. At the landward (shallowest) end the dipping reflectors overlie continental crust, while at the seaward end they are formed above oceanic crust. Beneath the central and lower part of the margin is a mid-crustal layer approximately 5 km thick that could be either stretched and thinned continental crust or maybe newly formed igneous crust generated at the same time as the dipping reflector sequence. Beneath this mid-crustal layer and above a well defined seismic Moho which rises from 27 km (continental end) to 15 km (oceanic end) across the margin, the present lower crust comprises a 10–15 km thick lens of material with a seismic velocity of 7.3 to 7.4 km/s. We interpret the present lower crustal lens as underplated igneous rocks left after extraction of the extruded basaltic lavas, A considerable quantity of new material has been added to the crust under the rifted margin. The present Moho is a new boundary formed during creation of the margin and cannot, therefore, be used to determine the amount of thinning.  相似文献
