Geological and ecological perspectives on the Middle Pleistocene

This paper evaluates the geological and paleoecological implications of a Wenner-Gren symposium Stratigraphy and Patterns of Cultural Change in the Middle Pleistocene. The deep-sea, glacial-eustatic, loess, alluvial, and palynological records suggest between six and eight cold-warm cycles since the Brunhes-Matuyama magnetic reversal of 700,000 BP. Till and outwash stratigraphies are inadequate to provide a valid nomenclature for the numerous glacials preceding the Würm. Since at least five of the glacials since 700,000 BP were sufficiently severe to produce permafrost in midlatitude Europe, the “glacial Pleistocene” begins with the Brunhes-Matuyama. Although earlier cold-warm cycles extend well back into the early Pleistocene, with extensive glaciation and repeated floral decimations in higher latitudes, the first record of permafrost in the Rhine Basin 700,000 BP argues that major climatic oscillations of the Brunhes epoch were of glacial-interglacial amplitude. It is therefore recommended that a Lower-Middle Pleistocene boundary be linked to the practicable and universally applicable chronometric horizon provided by the Brunhes-Matuyama reversal, while the Middle-Upper Pleistocene limit can continue to be drawn at the base of the last, Eemian Interglacial (130,000 BP). The tropical African record presently contributes little to general understanding of the Middle Pleistocene, while the climatic cycles of higher latitudes are of limited value in analyzing mid-Pleistocene records of the tropical continents. Problems of stratigraphic control and environmental contexts for archeological sites are discussed.     

Die Zukunft des Menschen aus paläontologischer Sicht

Zusammenfassung Ausgehend von den regelhaften Ablaufsformen in der stammesgeschichtlichen Entfaltung werden der stammesgeschichtliche Werdegang der Hominiden und die ihn bestimmenden Umbildungstendenzen diskutiert, die vor allem durch die Cerebralisation beherrscht werden. Die Frage, ob die orthogenetisch verlaufende Fortbildung der Hominiden eine aus der Entwicklungsrichtung abgeleitete, voraussagende Projektion in die Zukunft möglich macht, muß verneint werden; denn die excessive Cerebralisation führt den Menschen aus dem biologischen Zwangsablauf heraus in eine durch Entscheidungsfreiheit gekennzeichnete Sonderstellung.

Proceeding from the regular forms of evolution of the Humanoids, the phylogenic processes involved and the controlling remodeling tendencies, dominated principally by cerebralisation, are discussed.The question whether the orthogenetic course of further evolution of the Humanoids would make it possible to predict a future image — derived from the evolutionary trends — must be negated. This follows from the fact that excessive cerebralisation leads the Human-beings out of the biological inevitable course into a special situation characterised by free judgement.

Résumé En partant des règles sur la dérivation des formes dans l'évolution phylogénétique, l'auteur discute l'évolution des Hominidés et les tendances déterminantes à la transformation, principalement dominées par la cérébralisation. A la question de savoir si la continuation orthogénétique en cours de l'évolution des Hominidés peut faire l'objet d'une prédiction en la projetant selon sa ligne directrice, on ne peut que répondre négativement: la cérébralisation excessive conduit l'homme hors des contraintes biologiques dans une position particulière caractérisée par la liberté de décision.

The loss and maintenance of native crops in mountain agriculture

The fate of agricultural biodiversity varies among the native crops produced in a mountainous region. Four native crops (potatoes, maize, ulluco, quinoa) cultivated in the southern Peruvian sierra demonstrate different patterns of cultivar loss and cultivar maintenance. Contingent social, economic and environmental conditions in mountain agriculture shape the distinct fates befalling the cultivars in each crop. Three sets of specific conditions contribute to differences in the patterning of cultivar loss and maintenance: (1) proximate conditions in the local peasant economy, particularly access among agricultural households to land, labor, and capital, and changes in the availability and quality of the three endowments; (2) the social and cultural value of the crop in the local diet and cuisine; and (3) the biogeographic patterning of cultivars. Maintenance of cultivars currently marks the ulluco and quinoa crop as well as many potato and maize types. Cultivar loss besets the fast-maturing potato S. phureja and the slow-maturing maize types. To incorporate variable in situ crop-conservation programs into development planning for montane regions requires thoroughly assessing the contingent conditions for continued production.     

Vergleichende geochemische Untersuchungen an ost- und südalpinen Graniten,Granodioriten und Tonaliten

Zusammenfassung Im Anschluß an vergleichende Untersuchungen Karls (1959) zur Petrographie und chemischen Zusammensetzung metamorpher Tonalite nördlich des Alpenhauptkammes und nichtmetamorpher Intrusivgesteine des Periadriatischen Bogens wurden für geochemische Untersuchungen insgesamt 113 Gesteinsproben aus beiden Gebieten entnommen.Diese wurden auf folgende Hauptbestandteile: SiO₂, Fe ges. (als Fe₂O₃), CaO, MgO, Na₂O und K₂O sowie die Spurenelemente: Zn, Co, Ni, V, Cr, Sr, Pb (ferner Cu, Sn und Be) untersucht.Getrennt für beide Gesteinsgruppen wurden aus den Analysendaten die statistischen Mittelwerte und deren Standardabweichungen für die einzelnen Elemente berechnet.Beide Gruppen stimmen innerhalb der Standard-Abweichungen weitgehend überein, d. h. die metamorphen Tonalite der Nord-Gruppe entsprechen bezüglich der gefundenen Spurenelementgehalte den nichtmetamorphen periadriatischen Intrusivgesteinen der Süd-Gruppe. Eine Ausnahme bilden Co und Ni, die in der Nord-Gruppe deutlich höher liegen.Eine Beeinflussung des Spurenelementhaushaltes in den Gesteinen der Nord-Gruppe durch die Metamorphose (Tauernkristallisation) läßt sich nicht folgern. Die Co- und Ni-Gehalte müssen im Norden primär höher gewesen sein, denn die hier gegebenen Mittelwerte der Spurenelemente zeigen im Vergleich mit Werten aus Datensammlungen gute Übereinstimmung und deuten auf ein der Norm saurer Intrusiva entsprechendes geochemisches Milieu hin. Nur das Pb weicht mit erhöhten Werten von der Norm ab. Auch Grohmann (1965) gibt in Analysen vergleichbarer ostalpiner Gesteine erhöhte Pb-Gehalte an.Aus dem stofflich konservativen Verlauf der Tauernkristallisation wird ersichtlich, daß die Bildung der alpinen Lagerstätten dieses Raumes nicht auf die Metamorphose bezogen werden kann.

Following the comparative studies of Karl (1959) regarding the petrography and the chemical composition both of metamorphic tonalites in the north of the Alpen main ridge and the neighbouring nonmetamorphic periadriatic plutonic rocks in the south, 113 samples were taken from both areas for geochemical investigations. They have been analysed for the following main components: SiO₂, Fe₂O₃ (total Fe), CaO, MgO, Na₂O, and K₂O as well as for the trace elements Zn, Co, Ni, V, Cr, Sr, Pb, and also Cu, Sn, and Be.The arithmetic means of the analytical data have been calculated separately for the different elements inside both groups. Within the standard deviations the two groups agree with each other, except for Co and Ni, which have distinctive higher values in the Northern group. The dominant conformity of both groups indicates that the trace element content of the Northern group was not changed by the Tauern metamorphism. The contents of Co and Ni must have been primarily higher in the north.Comparisons with corresponding data of trace element contents given in diverse geochemical tables agree well with the values of means given here. Only Pb deviates with higher values from the standard content of acid plutonic rocks. This is in accordance with the results of Grohmann (1965), who also found higher values of Pb in comparative plutonic rocks of the Eastern Alpen mountains.

Faseriger Hedyphan von Långban (Schweden): eine orientierte Verwachsung mit Antigorit

Zusammenfassung Wahrscheinlich eine wiederholte Aufeinanderfolge von Hedyphan- und Antigoritwachstum führte zu einer orientierten Verwachsung, mit b des Antigorits //c des Hedyphans und (001) des Antigorits // (100) des Hedyphans. Diese Verwachsung verursacht eine sehr gute Teilbarkeit des Hedyphans parallel zu den Flächen (10¯10), (01¯10) und (¯1100). Die einzelnen Hedyphanfasern zeigen z. T. Partien, welche nach den Mikrosonden-Untersuchungen aus fast reinem Calcium und Barium-Karbonat bestehen.

Hedyphane (Pb, Ca)₅(AsO₄)₃Cl without distinct cleavage is known from Långban and Pajsberg, Sweden and Franklin, U.S.A. On samples of such a hedyphane from Långban, fibrous hedyphane with a very good cleavage //c-axis was found and studied by optical, x-ray and electron microprobe methods. It is shown that this cleavage is a result of an oriented intergrowth with antigorite stretched //b-axis on (10¯10), (01¯10) and (¯1100) of the hedyphane. The b-axis of this antigorite is // to the c-axis of the hedyphane and (001) of antigorite is // (100) of hedyphane. Some of the fibres of the hedyphane contain parts of almost pure Caor Ba-carbonate.

Zusammenfassung Das Rote Meer und der Golf von Aden werden im Gegensatz zuH. Cloos als kontinentale Risse gedeutet. Der Verfasser erkennt vor allen Dingen in den morphologischen Erscheinungen des Golfbodens, den Rinnen und Rücken deutliche Hinweise für die Richtigkeit derWegener'schen Kontinentalverschiebungstheorie. Weitere Argumente sind: Schwereüberschuss des Roten Meeres und des Adengolfes, Parallelität der gegenüberliegenden Küstenumrisse, globale Verbreitung der kontinentalen Risse.

Summary In contrast withH. Cloos, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden are explained as continental gaps. In the morphological appearance of the bed of the Gulf, in the ridges and depressions, the author sees above all, clear indications of the rightness of theWegener theory of continental drift. Further arguments are: the excess of gravity of the Red Sea and of the Gulf of Aden, the parallelism of the opposite coastlines and the wide extent of the continental gaps.
