There is no generally accepted evolutionary scheme for high mass star formation yet. A simple approach to address this problem is to cover several of the known stages during the formation of massive stars in the same cloud and then investigate their properties trying to construct an evolutionary sequence. Here we present such a project conducted with complementary APEX and ATCA observations. These observations show a compact and bright single hot core in the G327.3-0.6 region on a 0.03 pc scale with a mass of 500 M and 0.5–1.5 105 L. Additionally a clumpy filament is seen in N2H+. Together with cm continuum observations, the data reveal like pearls on a string several stages of massive star formation, with likely the youngest stages hiding in the cold N2H+ cores analysed with a multilevel study of the APEX and ATCA observations.  相似文献

Fixed nitrogen is a key nutrient involved in regulating global marine productivity and hence the global oceanic carbon cycle. Oceanic nitrogen (N2) fixation is estimated to supply 8×1012 moles N y?1 to the ocean, approximately equal to current riverine and the atmospheric inputs of fixed N, and between 50 and 100% of current estimates of oceanic denitrification. However, the spatial and temporal variability of N2 fixation remains uncertain, mostly because of the normal low resolution sampling for diazotroph distribution and fixation rates. It is well established that N2 fixation, mediated by the enzyme nitrogenase, is a source of hydrogen (H2), but the extent to which it leads to supersaturation of H2 in oceanic waters is unresolved. Here, we present simultaneous measurements of upper ocean dissolved H2 concentration (nmol L?1), and rates of N2 fixation (μmol N m?3 d?1), determined using 15N2 tracer techniques (at 7 or 15 m), on a transect from Fiji to Hawaii. We find a significant correlation (r=0.98) between dissolved H2 and rates of N2 fixation, with the greatest supersaturation of H2 and highest rates of N2 fixation being observed in the subtropical gyres at the southern (~18°S) and northern (18°N) reaches of the transect. The lowest H2 saturation and N2 fixation were observed in the equatorial region between 8°S and 14°N. We propose that an empirical relationship between H2 supersaturations and N2 fixation measurements could be used to guide sampling for 15N fixation measurements or to aid the spatial interpolation of such measurements.  相似文献

Mariner 9 images of the four great volcanic shields of the Tharsis region of Mars show many circular craters ranging in diameter from 100mm to 20 km. Previous attempts to date the volcanoes from their apparent impact crater densities yielded a range of results. The principal difficulty is sorting volcanic from impact craters for diameters ?1 km. Many of the observed craters are aligned in prominent linear and concentric patterns suggestive of volcanic origin. In this paper an attempt is made to date areas of shield surface, covered with high resolution images using only scattered small (?1 km) craters of probable impact origin. Craters of apparent volcanic origin are systematically excluded from the dating counts.The common measure of age, deduced for all surfaces studied, is a calculated “crater age” F′ defined as the number of craters equal to or larger than 1 km in diameter per 106km2. The conclusions reached from comparing surface ages and their geological settings are: (1) Lava flow terrain surfaces with ages, F′, from 180 to 490 are seen on the four great volcanoes. Summit surfaces of similar ages, F′ = 360 to 420, occur on the rims of calderas of Arsia Mons, Pavonis Mons, and Olympus Mons. The summit of Ascraeus Mons is possibly younger; F′ is calculated to be 180 for the single area which could be dated. (2) One considerably younger surface, F′ < 110, is seen on the floor of Arsia Mon's summit caldera. (3) Nearly crater free lava flow terrain surfaces seen on Olympus Mons are estimated to be less than half the age of a summit surface. The summit caldera floor is similarly young. (4) The pattern of surface ages on the volcanoes suggests that their eruption patterns are similar to those of Hawaiian basaltic shields. The youngest surfaces seem concentrated on the mid-to-lower flanks and within the summit calderas. (5) The presently imaged sample of shield surface, though incomplete, clearly shows a broad range of ages on three volcanoes—Olympus, Arsia, and Pavonis Mons.Estimated absolute ages of impact dated surfaces are obtained from two previously published estimates of the history of flux of impacting bodies on Mars. The estimated ranges of age for the observed crater populations are 0.5 to 1.2b.y. and 0.07 to 0.2b.y. Areas which are almost certainly younger, less than 0.5 or 0.07b.y., are also seen. The spans of surface age derived for the great shields are minimum estimates of their active lifetimes, apparently very long compared to those of terrestrial volcanoes.  相似文献

In 1997, seismic surveys in the troughs off northwest and north Iceland indicated the presence of a major, regional sub‐bottom reflector that can be traced over large areas of the shelf. Cores taken in 1997, and later in 1999 on the IMAGES V cruise, penetrated through the reflector. In core MD99‐2269 in Húnaflóaáll, this reflector is shown to be represented by a basaltic tephra with a geochemical signature and radiocarbon age correlative with the North Atlantic‐wide Saksunarvatn tephra. We trace this tephra throughout northwest Iceland in a series of marine and lake cores, as well as in terrestrial sediments; it forms a layer 1 to 25 cm thick of fine‐ to medium‐grained basaltic volcanic shards. The base of the tephra unit is always sharp but visual inspection and other measurements (carbonate and total organic carbon weight %) indicate a more diffuse upper boundary associated with bioturbation and with sediment reworking. Off northwest Iceland the Saksunarvatn tephra has distinct sediment magnetic properties. This is evident as a dramatic reduction in magnetic susceptibility, an increase in the frequency dependant magnetic susceptibility and ‘hard’ magnetisation in a −0.1T IRM backfield. Geochemical analyses from 11 sites indicate a tholeiitic basalt composition, similar to the geochemistry of a tephra found in the Greenland ice‐core that dates to 10 180 ± 60 cal. yr BP, and which was correlated with the 9000 14C yr BP Saksunarvatn tephra. We present accelerator mass spectrometry 14C dates from the marine sites, which indicate that the ocean reservoir correction is close to ca. 400 yr at 9000 14C yr BP off northwest Iceland. Zusammenfassung In zahlreichen Versuchen mit Gipsscheibenelektroden wird festgestellt, daß das Meßergebnis nicht nur vom Wassergehalt des Gipses, sondern auch von Temperatur, Bodenart und Individualität der Elektrode bestimmt wird. Von diesen Faktoren kann der Temperatureinfluß durch gleichzeitige Bodentemperaturmessung erfasst und ausgeschaltet werden. Bodenart und Individualität der Gipsscheibe erfordern Eichung einer jeden Elektrode in dem Boden, in welchem gemessen werden soll. Fehlerquellen ergeben sich durch das angegebene Eichverfahren, da sich der «natürliche» Boden nicht vollkommen reproduzieren läßt, sowie durch vorzeitige Korrosion der Elektrodengitter. Als Endergebnis wird festgestellt, daß Messungen mit Gipsscheibenelektroden im natürlichen ungedüngten Boden brauchbare Bodenfeuchtewerte ergeben.
Summary The resistance of gypsum disk units for soil moisture measurements is destined not only by the amount of water of gypsum, but also by temperature, quality of soil and individuality of the unit. The influence of temperature can be got and disconnected by simultaneous measuring of soil temperature. Quality of soil and individuality of the unit require calibration of each unit in the soil to be measured. Sources of error result from the applied procedure of calibration because the «natural» soil cannot be reproduced completely, and by premature corrosion of the electrods. Measurements by gypsum disk units supply useful amounts of soil moisture in natural unfertilized soils.
