Carleton University and Sander Geophysics are developing an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) for aeromagnetic surveying. As an early indication of the expected performance of the unmanned aircraft system, a simulated unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) was built. The simulated unmanned aircraft system is a T‐shaped structure configured as a horizontal gradiometer with two cesium magnetometers spaced 4.67 m apart, which is the same sensor geometry as planned for the unmanned aircraft system. The simulated unmanned aircraft system is flown suspended beneath a helicopter. An 8.5 km2 area in the Central Metasedimentary Belt of the Grenville Province, near Plevna, Ontario, Canada, was surveyed with the simulated unmanned aircraft system suspended 50 m above ground. The survey site was chosen on the basis of its complex geological structure. The total magnetic intensity (TMI) data recorded were compared to that obtained during a conventional fixed‐wing survey and a ground survey. Transverse magneto‐gradiometric data were also recorded by the simulated unmanned aircraft system. The simulated unmanned aircraft system total magnetic intensity data have a higher resolution than the conventional fixed‐wing data and were found to have a similar resolution to that of the ground survey data. The advantages of surveying with the simulated unmanned aircraft system were: (1) the acquisition of a detailed data set free of gaps in coverage at a low altitude above the terrain and (2) substantial saving of time and effort. In the survey site, the 4.67 m simulated unmanned aircraft system gradiometer measured the transverse magnetic gradient reliably up to an altitude of 150 m above ground.  相似文献

Depth profiles of solute chemistry and sulfate isotopic compositions are presented for groundwater and pore water in a sequence of Quaternary glacial outwash sediments. Sand units show evidence for hydraulic connection to the surface and thus modern sources of solutes. Finer‐grained sediments show a general pattern of increasing solute concentrations with depth, with sulfate derived from ancient rainwater and pyrite oxidation in the soil/drift. In these sediments sulfate has undergone bacterial sulfate reduction (BSR) to produce biogenic sulfide. In clay sediments, with d10 ≤ 1·6 µm, high concentrations of sulfate and acetate now co‐exist, implying that BSR is inhibited. The correlation with smaller sediment grain size indicates that this is due to pore size exclusion of the sulfate reducing bacteria. Mechanical restriction of microbial function thus provides a fundamental limitation on microbial respiration in buried clay‐rich sediments, which acts as a control on the chemical evolution of their pore waters. Caffeine has been associated with wastewater pollution in temperate and subtropical locations, but environmental caffeine concentrations in tropical locations have not been reported. The objectives of this study were to measure caffeine and agricultural pesticide (carbaryl, metalaxyl, and metribuzin) concentrations in environmental waters on the tropical north shore of Kauai (Hawaii, USA) and assess whether patterns in caffeine concentration were consistent with a wastewater caffeine source. Groundwater, river, stream and coastal ocean samples were collected in August 2006 and February 2007. Caffeine was detected in all August 2006 samples and in 33% of February 2007 samples at concentrations up to 88 ng L−1. Metribuzin was detected in five samples collected in February 2007. Carbaryl and metalaxyl were not detected in any sample. Caffeine was not detected in offshore ocean samples or river samples upstream of human development. A positive correlation between caffeine and enterococci suggested a possible wastewater caffeine source.  相似文献

In a recent note in The Professional Geographer, Lovett and Flowerdew (1989) introduce the analysis of count data using Poisson regression. Concern here rests with generalizing their discussion to show how a priori information may be included into models that incorporate dependent variables enumerated as counts. These models can be calibrated using the OFFSET command in GLIM. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the applicability of the method of offsets to other problems in spatial analysis.  相似文献

This paper provides an introduction to the set of articles presented in the focus section Women in Geography in the 21st Century. The paper argues that feminist geographers should view their professional biographies in a structure-agency context. Such a theoretical perspective views events that are commonly thought to be unique and attributable to individual merit or foible as the outcome instead of interactions between actors and social structures. Creating genuinely equal opportunities in geography departments for women and others who are different from the able-bodied, middle-class, white heterosexual male model of “the geographer” depends upon challenges to and transformations of the structures which bear on the discipline, rather than solely upon individual initiative.  相似文献

Lead- and Pb-As-jarosites are minerals common to acidic, sulphate-rich environments, including weathering zones of sulphide ore deposits and acid rock or acid mine drainage (ARD/AMD) sites, and often form on or near galena. The structures of these jarosites are based on linear tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral (T-O-T) sheets, comprised of slightly distorted FeO6 octahedra and SO42− (-AsO43− in Pb-As-jarosites) tetrahedra. To better understand the dissolution mechanisms and products of the break down of Pb- and Pb-As-jarosite, preliminary batch dissolution experiments were conducted on synthetic Pb- and Pb-As-jarosite at pH 2 and 20 °C, to mimic environments affected by ARD/AMD, and at pH 8 and 20 °C, to simulate ARD/AMD environments recently remediated with slaked lime (Ca(OH)2). All four dissolutions are incongruent. Dissolution of Pb-jarosite at pH 2 yields aqueous Pb, Fe and SO42−. The pH 8 Pb-jarosite dissolution yields aqueous Pb, SO42− and poorly crystalline Fe(OH)3, which does not appear to resorb Pb or SO42−, possibly due to the low solution pH (3.44-3.54) at the end of the experiment. The pH 2 and 8 dissolutions of Pb-As-jarosite result in the formation of secondary compounds (poorly crystalline PbSO4 for pH 2 dissolution; poorly crystalline PbSO4 and Fe(OH)3 for pH 8 dissolution), which may act as dissolution inhibitors after 250 to 300 h of dissolution. In the pH 2 dissolution, aqueous Fe, SO42− and AsO43− also form, and in the pH 8 dissolution, Fe(OH)3 precipitates then subsequently resorbs aqueous AsO43−. The dissolutions probably proceed by preferred dissolution of the A- and T-sites, which contain Pb, and SO42− and AsO43−, respectively, rather than Fe, which is sterically remote, within the T-O-T Pb- and Pb-As-jarosite structures. These data provide the foundation necessary for further, more detailed investigations into the dissolution of Pb- and Pb-As-jarosites.  相似文献

A coupled neutral-ionic photochemical model has been used to interpret the ionic composition of the Venusian dayside ionosphere measured by the orbiter retarding potential analyser (ORPA) experiment on board the NASA Pioneer-Venus orbiter spacecraft. The electron and ion temperatures also measured by the ORPA are used for calculating the plasma-diffusion coefficients and scale heights for ions. The neutral temperature profiles and the densities of neutral constituents, particularly CO2 and O, play key roles in the determination of the height profiles of the ionic constituents. All these quantities vary substantially in the Venusian thermosphere near the terminator; the models presented are representatives of the solar zenith angle ~65°. The predicted O2+ densities below ~200km agree particularly well with observations by the ORPA, but the model values are significantly less than those measured by the orbiter ion mass spectrometer (OIMS). Models predict much smaller densities than observed values for all molecular ions above ~200km. The reason for the turn-up trend of the concentration gradient of molecular ions observed at these heights by both ORPA and OIMS is unknown. One of the models can predict O+ ion densities above ~200km compatible with observations, if an effective vertical escape flux (φ108cm?2sec?1) is assumed at the ionopause. The neutral air density required to explain the observed ion composition is about 1.4 times larger than the values measured by the orbiter neutral mass spectrometer (ONMS).  相似文献
