Relation between the monthly sums of sunshine and global radiation

Summary The statistical treatment of the dependence of monthly sums of global radiation on the monthly sums of sunshine at the stations of Hradec Králové, Bratislava — Koliba and Hurbanovo is presented. The parameters of linear and quadratic regression are derived for the said stations and for the individual months of the year. Drawing on the statistical analysis of the initial data sets, the accuracy and reliability of the mentioned regression relations are critically evaluated.

Weak Contrast PP Wave Displacement R/T Coefficients in Weakly Anisotropic Elastic Media

—Approximate PP plane wave displacement coefficients of reflection and transmission for weak contrast interfaces separating weakly but arbitrarily anisotropic elastic media are presented. The PP reflection coefficient for such an interface has been derived recently by Vavry?uk and P?en?ík (1997). The PP transmission coefficient presented in this paper was derived by the same approach. The coefficients are given as a sum of the coefficient for the weak contrast interface separating two nearby isotropic media and a term depending linearly on contrasts of the so-called weak anisotropy (WA) parameters (parameters specifying deviation of properties of the medium from isotropy), across the interface. While the reflection coefficient depends only on 8 of the complete set of the WA parameters describing P-wave phase velocity in weakly anisotropic media, the transmission coefficient depends on their complete set. The PP reflection coefficient depends on "shear-wave splitting parameter" γ. Tests of accuracy of the approximate formulae are presented on several models.     

A note on the microseismic noise in the western carpathians

Summary The level of microseismic noise is studied at locations in the Western Carpathians where, apart from the vertical component of the noise, also its horizontal component was recorded by a broad-band seismograph. The amplitudes of the permanent noise in the horizontal component ranged from 10 to 83 nm and, at most locations, the predominant periods T>0.45 s, although the predominant periods of the vertical component in the Carpathian region are mostly within the interval T 0.24–0.37 s.     

226Ra distribution in the Antarctic Ocean

²²⁶Ra data on eleven vertical profiles taken during the GEOSECS program from the Antarctic Ocean and its vicinity in both the Atlantic and the Pacific are presented. Replicate measurements were made on each sample using the Rn-emanation method. The precision (1 σ) based on triplicate analyses averages about ±2.5%. Waters all around the Antarctic continent below 2 km depth appear to exhibit a uniform²²⁶Ra concentration of 21.5 ± 1dpm/100kg, except perhaps locally such as the Ross Sea and the Drake Passage where small variations may be present. Higher in the water column, the²²⁶Ra contents decrease toward the surface with gradients which vary as a function of the influence exerted by the Antarctic Convergence. Across this oceanic front, a north-to-south increase of²²⁶Ra occurs (the increase being the largest near the surface: from 8 to 18 dpm/100 kg), reflecting the combining effect of deep-water upwelling and meridional water mixing. The core layer of the Antarctic Intermediate Water contains about 14 dpm/100 kg of²²⁶Ra and that of the Circumpolar Intermediate Water (O₂ minimum and local T maximum) about 18 dpm/100 kg. To a first approximation,²²⁶Ra covaries with Si in the circumpolar waters.

The matrix , because of its remarkable properties, is called the Pandora Box matrix. The paper gives the proofs of these properties and the manner in which they can be employed in the calculus of observations.
