Gonipterus scutellatus outbreaks may severely defoliate Eucalyptus plantations growing in South Africa. Therefore, detecting and mapping the severity and extent of G. scutellatus defoliation is essential for the deployment of suppressive measures. In this study, we tested the utility of spatially optimized vegetation indices and an artificial neural network in detecting and mapping G. scutellatus-induced vegetation defoliation, using both visual estimates of percentage defoliation and optical leaf area index (LAI) measures. We tested both field methods to determine which of the two were more superior in detecting vegetation defoliation using optimized vegetation indices. These indices were computed from a WorldView-2 pan-sharpened image, which is characterized with a 0.5-m spatial resolution and eight spectral bands. The indices were resampled to spatial resolutions that best represented levels of G. scutellatus-induced defoliation. The results showed that levels of defoliation, using visual percentage estimates, were detected with an R2 of 0.83 and an RMSE of 1.55 (2.97% of the mean measured defoliation), based on an independent test data-set. Similarly, LAI subjected to defoliation was detected with an R2 of 0.80 and an RMSE of 0.03 (0.06% of the mean measured LAI), based on an independent test data-set. Therefore, the results indicate that the cheaper less-complicated visual percentage estimates of defoliation was the more superior model of the two. A sensitivity analysis revealed that NDRE, MCARI2 and ARI ranked as the top three most influential indices in developing both percentage defoliation and LAI models. Furthermore, we compared the optimized model with a model developed using the original image spatial resolution. The results indicated that the optimized model performed better than the original 0.5-m spatial resolution model. Overall, the study showed that vegetation indices optimized to specific spatial resolutions can effectively detect and map levels of G. scutellatus-induced defoliation and LAI subjected to defoliation.  相似文献

Different failure modes during fracture shearing have been introduced including normal dilation or sliding, asperity cut-off and degradation. Attempts have been made to study these mechanisms using analytical, experimental and numerical methods. However, the majority of the existing models simplify the problem, which leads to unrealistic results. With this in mind, the aim of this paper is to simulate the mechanical behaviour of synthetic and rock fracture profiles during direct shear tests by using the two-dimensional particle flow computer code PFC2D. Correlations between the simulated peak shear strength and the fracture roughness parameter D R1 recently proposed by Rasouli and Harrison (2010) are developed. Shear test simulations are carried out with PFC2D and the effects of the geometrical features as well as the model micro-properties on the fracture shear behaviour are studied. The shear strength and asperity degradation processes of synthetic profiles including triangular, sinusoidal and randomly generated profiles are analysed. Different failure modes including asperity sliding, cut-off, and asperity degradation are explicitly observed and compared with the available models. The D R1 parameter is applied to the analysis of synthetic and rock fracture profiles. Accordingly, correlations are developed between D R1 and the peak shear strength obtained from simulations and by using analytical solutions. The results are shown to be in good agreement with the basic understanding of rock fracture shear behaviour and asperity contact degradation.  相似文献

Hydraulic fracturing is a widely used stimulation method to enhance the productivity of unconventional resources. The hydraulic fracturing operation in naturally fractured reservoirs or when it is expected to intersect a natural interface, such as an interbed is subjected to complexity. The induced fracture may cross, get arrested by or open the fracture plane upon its arrival at the natural interface. Besides other parameters, this depends on the natural interface mechanical properties, including the cohesion and friction angle of the interface. Several analytical criteria have been developed to predict the interaction mechanism of induced and natural fracture. While these analytical solutions have been developed based on some simplified assumptions, they can provide a good understanding of the effect of different parameters. The first part of this paper summarizes the available criteria for interaction of hydraulic and natural fractures. Important factors will be mentioned and illustrations will be given to present the limitations of each criterion. The second part discusses the development and validation of an extension to Renshaw and Pollard criterion in the form a single analytical formula for non-orthogonal cohesive fracture. This includes the contribution of the strength of the in-fill material to the bonding of the two sides of a fracture, hence its effect on the interaction mechanism. The proposed criterion was validated using published laboratory data. Finally, a methodology is proposed to help the design of interaction experiments in the laboratory, which can also be used for prediction of interaction mode in numerical simulations.  相似文献

Gas shales are one type of unconventional reservoirs which have attracted significant attention for gas production in recent years. Gas production from very tight shales requires employment of hydraulic fracturing as a stimulation technique. To design hydraulic fracture operation the mechanical properties of the targeted and surrounding formations should be estimated. Also, the magnitude and orientation of in situ stresses in the field need to be known to estimate the fracture initiation and propagation pressures. This study focuses on gas shale characteristics in the North Perth Basin and uses data corresponding to well Arrowsmith-2 (AS-2) which is the first dedicated shale gas well drilled in Western Australia. A log-based analysis was used to build the rock mechanical model (RMM). The RMM results were used to set up a hydraulic fracturing laboratory experiment. The test was done in the presence of three principal stresses to mimic the real field stress conditions. The test results include the pressure–time curve which was used to estimate the initiation and propagation pressure at that depth. The results were used to draw some practical conclusions related to hydraulic fracturing operation in the field.  相似文献

Oceanic Islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans have extremely small land areas, usually less than 500 km2, with maximum height about 4 m above sea level. The Republic of Maldives is an independent island nation in the Indian Ocean south of Sri Lanka which stretches vertically in the Indian Ocean from 07° 06'N - 0° 42'S. The land area of this island country is about 300 km2, and none of Maldives' 1190 islands has an elevation more than 3 m above sea level. In fact the Maldives has the distinction of being the flattest country on earth, making it extremely vulnerable to the effects of global warming. Of the south Asian countries, the Maldives is the most vulnerable nation, facing severe consequences as a result of global warming and sea level rise (SLR). Because of their obvious vulnerability to SLR, the Government of Maldives is very much concerned about climate change. As global warming and the related SLR is an important integrated environmental issue, the need of the hour is to monitor and assess these changes. The present article deals mainly with the analysis of the tidal and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data observed at Male and Gan stations along the Maldives coast in the northern and southern hemispheres, respectively. The objective of the analysis is to study the trends of these parameters. Trend analysis is also performed on the corresponding air temperature data of both stations. The results show that Maldives coastal sea level is rising in the same way (rising trend) as the global sea level. The mean tidal level at Male has shown an increasing trend of about 4.1 mm/year.Similarly at Gan, near the equator,it has registered a positive trend of about 3.9 mm/year.Sea level variations are the manifestations of various changes that are taking place in the Ocean-Atmosphere system. Therefore, the variations in SST and air temperature are intimately linked to sea level rise. It is found that SST and air temperature have also registered an increasing trend at both stations. The evidence of rising trends suggest that careful future monitoring of these parameters is very much required. Tropical cyclones normally do not affect the Maldives coast. However, due to its isolated location, the long fetches in association with swells generated by storms, that originated in the far south have resulted in flooding. Thus the rising rate of sea level with high waves and flat topography have increased the risk of flooding and increased the rate of erosion and alteration of beaches.  相似文献
