Rock-avalanche dynamics: insights from granular physics experiments   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Rock avalanches are known to behave in extraordinary ways unlike other landslides, and their deposits in part reflect their unusual physical behavior. Recent experiments in granular physics suggest that many phenomena and features simply reflect the non-linear nature of granular flows, although some behavior cannot simply be reproduced in lab scale experiments. In a static configuration, grain–grain contact networks dominate the distribution of forces and stresses within a granular mass. During flow, granular collisions damp the system through energy dissipation, while gravitational potential drives the system. The energy distribution between static and collisional stresses within the system can change very rapidly. Threshold events dominate system response, and the challenge is to find which characterization of the static phase helps to predict failure (and thus flow) resistance. Once flowing, many “unusual” rock-avalanche phenomena are entirely consistent with the physics of flow of large granular masses, but the low energy dissipation rate required for long run-out events requires the presence of physical processes that are not involved in experimental flows in the current parameter range or in the assumptions of current models.  相似文献

This investigation deals with the analytical formulation and experimental validation of a prestressed reinforced concrete seismic isolator with kinematic constraints at both ends. The kinematic isolator was proposed initially as a low‐cost solution for seismic protection of low‐income people housing usually placed at the periphery of big cities where regular to bad soil conditions are common. So, the isolator is also a pile foundation with a central prestressed cable and two rolling steel surfaces at the top and bottom ends. By varying the shapes of the end rolling surfaces, different force–deformation constitutive relationships for the isolator may be obtained. Energy dissipation is introduced by yielding of passive reinforcement at the rolling interphase. Apart from stating the large‐deformation formulation of the element, several relevant aspects of the behaviour of these devices are studied herein, such as the increase in the tension of the central prestressed cable, responsible for the self‐centring action of the isolator, the floor uplift that results from the geometry of the isolator, and the vertical stability of the system. Experimental and theoretical results obtained for a group of 9 testing specimens show an excellent agreement in the force–deformation constitutive relationship. Bulk and molecular geochemical, micropalaeontological, and carbon-isotopic data are used to address the different local and global factors influencing the environment of sedimentation of the La Luna Formation (Cenomanian-Campanian, approximate palaeolatitude 15°N) in a single section in western Venezuela. Based on the constructed chronostratigraphic framework, oxygen-depleted bottom-water conditions and black-shale deposition started in western Venezuela well before the widespread occurrence of organic-rich sediments in higher palaeolatitude regions such as the Tethys and the North Atlantic near or at the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary. In the La Luna Formation, palaeoenvironmental conditions that allowed the preservation of organic matter (mainly of marine origin), prevailed until Santonian times in a distal platform facies with very low siliciclastic input. Changes in lithology appear to reflect the local response to eustatic sea-level variations and the presence of a migrating upwelling belt affecting the bioproductivity of silica and carbonate. A marked δ13Corg isotopic excursion is recognised in the middle part of the section, and is apparently unrelated to local palaeoenvironmental changes in bioproductivity and oxygen depletion. Biological marker data show no variations in association with the isotopic excursion, being mainly controlled by local fluctuations in organic-matter input and preservation.  相似文献

Summary A new occurrence of basalt (minimum K/Ar age 57.9 ± 2.2 m.y.) is reported from Budaliget, near Budapest. Major and minor element concentrations show that the basalts are alkaline and potassic in nature ranging from olivine tholeiite to moderately undersaturated basanite. High mg-values and concentrations of Ni and Cr indicate that some of the samples may represent primary compositions. High pressure accidental xenoliths, xenocrysts and cognate megacrysts are frequent and the chemical zoning patterns of olivine and pyroxene phenocrysts indicate a complex evolution and polibaric conditions for the crystallization. The discovery of the new basalt occurrence is important from a geodynamical point of view: prior to the last two major geodynamical events (Plio-Pleistocene rifting with associated alkali basaltic volcanism and collision of microplates with associated Miocene calk-alkaline volcanism) the continental lithosphere below NE Transdanubia may have experienced another rifting period in the Paleocene or Upper Cretaceous.With 7 Figures  相似文献

A statistical treatment of MT data from the Pannonian Basin, Hungary, based on the distortion theory of the S-effect suggests that the local increase in crustal conductivity is connected with deep fractures. Field model measurements have recently been carried out in a shallow, quasi two-dimensional basin of well known tectonics using MT station distances of 1–3 km. The results of the investigation and numerical modelling of near surface distortions, support the idea that deep fractures (faults) contain the conducting formations. According to 2-D model computations, several conducting dykes at considerable depths can cause anomalies which are indiscernible from an anomaly due to a conducting layer. The significance of these results is discussed from the point of view of geothermal energy exploitation.  相似文献

We report specifically on a quantum electrodynamic feature of the one-photon-pair annihilation. Most of the calculation related with this process (not excluding other ones) have been carried out usually utilizing the wave functions obtained from the Dirac equation in the Landau gauge A = (0,Bx, 0), where B is oriented along the z-axis (Johnson and Lippman, 1949). Although, the eigenstates of the Dirac Hamiltonian as it was introduced by Johnson and Lippman, do not consider the coupling to the radiation field and consequently they reflect only forp z = 0 the same linear combination of the two degenerate polarization states.We report the transition rate function for the one-photon-pair annihilation in a strong magnetic field by using the Sokolov and Ternov eigenstate |± as far asp z = 0 andN > 0 is concerned. The difference between the expression for the transition rate by using the Sokolov and Ternov eigenstates and the one calculated by (Wunneret al., 1986), is just the functionI s,s which corresponds to the degeneracy of the orbit center of the electrons characterized by the quantum numberss ands. The responses, re, given by several multicomponent combination rules used in seismic codes for determining peak responses to three ground motion components are evaluated for elastic systems and compared with the critical response rcr; this is defined as the largest response for all possible incident angles of the seismic components and obtained by means of the CQC3‐rule when a principal seismic component is vertical, or the GCQC3‐rule when it departs from the vertical direction. The combination rules examined are the SRSS‐, 30%‐, 40%‐ and IBC‐rules, considering different alternatives for the design horizontal spectrum. Assuming that a principal seismic component is along the vertical direction, the upper and lower bounds of the ratio re/rcr for each combination rule are determined as a function of the spectral intensity ratio of the horizontal seismic components and of the responses to one seismic component acting alternately along each structural axis. Underestimations and overestimations of the critical response are identified for each combination rule and each design spectrum. When a component departs from the vertical direction, the envelopes of the bounds of the ratio re/rcr for each combination rule are calculated, considering all possible values of the spectral intensity ratios. It is shown that the inclination of a principal component with respect to the vertical axis can significantly reduce the values of re/rcr with respect to the case when the component is vertical. A new packrat midden chronology from Playas Valley, southwestern New Mexico, is the first installment of an ongoing effort to reconstruct paleovegetation and paleoclimate in the U.S.A.–Mexico Borderlands. Playas Valley and neighboring basins supported pluvial lakes during full and/or late glacial times. Plant macrofossil and pollen assemblages from nine middens in the Playas Valley allow comparisons of two time intervals: 16,000–10,000 and 4000–0 14C yr B.P. Vegetation along pluvial lake margins consisted of open pinyon–juniper communities dominated by Pinus edulis, Juniperus scopulorum, Juniperus cf. coahuilensis, and a rich understory of C4 annuals and grasses. This summer-flowering understory is also characteristic of modern desert grassland in the Borderlands and indicates at least moderate summer precipitation. P. edulis and J. scopulorum disappeared or were rare in the midden record by 10,670 14C yr B.P. The late Holocene is marked by the arrival of Chihuahuan desert scrub elements and few departures as the vegetation gradually became modern in character. Larrea tridentata appears as late as 2190 14C yr B.P. based on macrofossils, but may have been present as early as 4095 14C yr B.P. based on pollen. Fouquieria splendens, one of the dominant desert species present at the site today, makes its first appearance only in the last millennium. The midden pollen assemblages are difficult to interpret; they lack modern analogs in surface pollen assemblages from stock tanks at different elevations in the Borderlands.  相似文献

Animals respond to climatic change by adapting or by altering distributional patterns. How an animal responds is influenced by where it is positioned within its geographic range; the probability of extirpation is increased near range boundaries. Here, we examine the impact of Holocene climatic fluctuations on a small mammalian herbivore, the bushy-tailed woodrat (Neotoma cinerea), at five locations within south central Idaho and northwestern Utah. Previous work demonstrated that woodrats adapt to temperature shifts by altering body size. We focus here on the relationship between body mass, temperature, and location within the geographic range. Body mass is estimated by measuring fossil fecal pellets, a technique validated in earlier work. Overall, we find the predicted phenotypic response to climate change: animals were larger during cold periods, and smaller during warmer episodes. However, we also identify several time periods when changes in environmental temperature exceeded the adaptive flexibility of N. cinerea. A smaller-bodied species, the desert woodrat (N. lepida) apparently invaded lower elevation sites during the mid-Holocene, despite being behaviorally and physically subordinate to N. cinerea. Analysis of contemporary patterns of body size and thermal tolerances for both woodrat species suggests this was because of the greater heat tolerance of N. lepida. The robust spatial relationship between contemporary body size and ambient temperature is used as a proxy to reconstruct local climate during the Holocene.  相似文献
